I'm sure you all probably already noticed this but just to make official, Tryg is currently inactive except by request until I'm done with the semester. A bit too much for me to manage with Stoltfar right now so I'm putting the whole thing on the backburner until the summer comes. Luckily that will just be a few weeks. I'm not going inactive, you can still catch me playing Veriswen in Mockingbay.

I decided to do a thing for Tryg too after the positive response I got to the one I wrote for Veriswen. This one is much less depressing, I promise. It's also less focused since things have been slow in Stoltfar as of late, but brings things into context for his current situation.
Enjoy.

The bitter northern winds whipped across the Chieftain's face, snow surrounding him in every direction. The sun shone high above in the deep blue, cloudless sky, but gave little respite from the cold that tried to bite through his thick hide cloak. To his right, in the south watched the Ironwall Mountains, a looming barrier that separated him from the lands of the people he swore to bring to justice, and far behind him the frozen megaliths of the Strait of Ruin and Stoltfar Harbor acted as his beacon back to his home. But he was not headed there, not yet. He lie perfectly still in wait, his opponent ambling several meters away from him. The beast was as of yet unaware of his presence, but he was well aware of the speed it could reach if it did notice him. He did not care as he readied his bow, slowly nocking an arrow as his eyes tracked the beast:

A white rabbit.

The creature's coat was as white as the snow around it, and even the seasoned hunter's trained eyes could conceivably miss it. It continued on its path, nibbling at the shrubs that stuck up through the permanent frost of the tundra. It was a small but common prey for him in the tundra, with a good pelt and enough meat for a decent meal for a few people.

Has my son truly already managed to kill one? Gods, I'm growing old so fast, it seems... Or he's just growing up fast. Or both. Maybe I should take him with me, it would give him a chance to see a bigger part of the world.

It had been a beautiful day much like today, when he was watching over his son as he practiced on a target set up just outside the walls. He had earlier promised the boy that if a rabbit happened by, he could try to shoot it. Perhaps it was luck that a rabbit did happen by, and perhaps it was luck that Segar's arrow found its mark. But then again, the Chieftain did not believe in luck, only strength and weakness. To him, those who worship Jax only use it as an excuse to throw caution to the wind and hope that they are in the god's favor. Or have his attention at all.

Segar's aim had been true, as was his intent. He is a fast learner. He must continue to learn and I must guide him, he's at the age where he must start to learn about his own responsibilities.
He drew his bow and spoke a prayer almost inaudibly, as if whispering to the wind itself.

"Let my aim be true and guide this arrow..."

He loosed the arrow, and...

The rabbit leaped and bound away quickly as the arrow struck the frozen ground just in front of it. Tryg stood, cursing under his breath. Not this time, not this prey. He shouldered his bow and reached down to pick up the two rabbits he had already successfully hunted and strung up by their hind legs, and turned to move back towards the warmth of Stoltfar, to where Od waited for him.

The love of his life, whom he had stood by from the first day he met her, through all of the hardships both of them had endured. He knew that Odette had suffered more - the woman had lost many friends, and been betrayed by many others. Secrets, lies and torment had twisted her through the years, and yet she somehow endured it and still had tremendous strength, and fiercely protected her family. But through the numerous relationships both of them had gone through, all of them having met tragic and cruel ends, they had both found the strength to push on and finally found each other in a way neither had expected in the long time they had already known each other, and each knew that the other was the one they would stay with until the day they died - and they did not intend to let that happen anytime soon.

I will forever trust her before anyone else... She has my heart completely, and her faith is undying and absolute. She will follow me and I will follow her, but she will also protect the children...

He was silent for the whole journey back, vigilant in remaining aware of his surroundings. But he was equally captivated by the stark beauty of the barren, vast tundra that only ended where it met the mountains or the sea in the far distance. As he moved into the town, he passed by the postal service ran by Theo Calderon, his steward. He could not rightly remember how he met the lad originally, but he knew that it happened in the Hawklight camp after they had reached the new world. They had bonded over a lovely incident involving a rather disturbing man named Jack. They never spoke of it anymore. There was no point. The damage was done and Theo was finding the strength to move past the trauma of being drugged in such a manipulative way. He had to. Death lies in the future, not the past, and he had to find the strength and wisdom to continue avoiding it. He was clever and asked questions that Tryg never thought of. The Chieftain truly did love the lad, practically as his own son if it was not for his age, and a part of him knew he did not show it often enough.

That is why he was deeply considering bringing the lad with him to Oren. Since Maceo's death and Carlos' release, he had been invited to travel to the fortress and meet Count Varyn. But family first - there must always be a Strand in Stoltfar.

Someone must stay with the children. If I bring Segar with me, then undoubtedly Od will be torn between coming with me and staying in the town with Ellie. I trust Theo to care for the children as well, but Od also does not like strangers.... Where's Kharn when you need him... I suppose I'll talk with them later once I've rested... I need a drink.
