(OOC: The following is a retelling of the campaign from a player's perspective. This is intended to be a common knowledge recap for new players or for returning players so that they do not feel confused or left out as to what has been happening in the world. Only that which is feasible to know is listed, and anything in-depth would need to be roleplayed out to discover further. I will keep it updated as it trucks along best I can.)

{ The Age of the Blight }
- A Forlorn Campaign Summary -
https://hollowworld.co.uk/forums/forlorn-campaign.550/

-- At first the rains came. Five days of a downpour across most of the land, seemingly a fluke of the rainy seasons. Many thought nothing of it at first, as the weather is fickle and unpredictable at best as it is.
{ The Downpour }

-- The various citizens across the continent came to notice a strange shape flying across the skies. A mysterious entity that kept itself above the clouds, but was spotting doing sweeps across the whole of the land. Many proposed theories as to what it was, but none were entirely sure at first.
{ Strange Sightings }

-- Animals began acting strangely across the kingdoms. Signs of sickness and peculiar behaviors. Overly aggressive, and wandering closer to cities than they normally would. Reportedly a bear within the Storm's Landing tavern, swarms of bats en masse, rabid dogs. Not long after, people begin showing symptoms of sickness as well. It is barely understood, and there is a great deal of paranoia, fear, and confusion as to the progression of the sickness.
{ The Ashen Blight }

-- Olive Kov'Gra'Sek opens her hospital in Storm's Landing, but it quickly becomes over capacity. Lady Elizabeth Kane asks Olive to bring everyone into Compendium, where there is a larger facility to house them. The Lady Kane publicly declares that the city is to be considered the center for the research and cure efforts. Many settlements remain within their own borders, but many gravitate to The Compendium to aid in the research. Duke Charles Kane heads the city's defenses, and pulls his resources to help further protection of the patients.
{
The Compendium's Call }
{
A Bounty}
{
Research Conversations }

-- The city of Storm's Landing grows chaotic as infected are closed out of the city. Riots ensue and the city is set ablaze.
{ Uprisings }

-- The sickness progresses and slowly people begin to understand more and more of what the symptoms are and how it is spread. People are kept under quarantine, but the city is under constant siege. The infected animals are discovered to be under control of a Hivemind intelligence, and Compendium is constantly sieged by that which crawls from the wilderness. As more infected patients and more fighters gather, it grows to be a larger target with each day. Each step toward curing it is another step that it fights harder. Swarms of bats, wendigo attacks, birds, and wolves are a neverending threat. The fighters are exhausted and the sick lose morale quickly.

-- Cures are discovered for the sickness. There are arcane, divine, and alchemical means for aiding the sick. The healers are targeted for their ability, but the fighters protect them the best they can. Morale improves.

-- The strange black shape flying through the sky reveals itself to be a dragon of considerable size and threat. It destroys parts of Compendium.

-- The Kane twins order the evacuation of the Compendium. The attacks grow more fierce and the creatures that crawl out of the forests are beyond manageable. Patients and supplies are loaded into wagons and they flee during an exhausting three day journey from Compendium to Storm's Landing, and then onto a boat that takes them to Linlea. During the journey, they encounter terrifying beasts created by the Entity that controls the disease.
{ Compendium's Evacuation }
{
Road Walker Beast }
{
The Devourer Beast }

-- Linlea becomes host for numerous refugees. Lady Ashna Kov'Gra'Sek and Lord Laernor Kov'Gra'Sek tentatively welcome the infected, healthy, and researchers in a show of good faith. The reclusive Isle, once home to the moors, becomes home to the large outpouring of desperate and displaced. Lady Elizabeth Kane oversees the research efforts and manages the healers while Charles delegates protection details to set up defenses around the Isle.
{
Linlean Refugees }
{
The Mistwatch }

-- Astrum Isles remains as an additional defense, where many people flock to in addition to Linlea as a way to escape the Infection.

-- The dragon makes its true might known, and the city of Thorne is destroyed and its people killed. The dragon's roar able to deafen and bring blood to the ears, and its breath able to bring with it death, infection, and burning heat. Thorne, once the largest agricultural center of the continent, became barren and rotten soil in the course of the attack. Much of the continent feels the strain as food becomes scarce. Grain and produce is harder to come by, and much of the livestock or wild game is infected and inedible. Starvation becomes a real threat for much of the mainland that do not have access to safe food supplies.
{
Thorne Falls }
{
From the Ashes of Thorne }

-- The refugees of the mainland hear about Linlea's promise of refuge, and rumor of cures. Starving and infected alike board ships and make their way to the island en masse. Some of the infected are under the control of the entity, and the ships crash into the harbor. People flood out, desperate for help. It is chaos, and the ships also bear hidden threats in the form of plague beasts. The ones who are aggressive and pose a threat are slain, while the healthy and sensible are ferried to safety and given treatment. The bodies are fished out of the water and in the coming days, the Isle is scoured for survivors or remaining threats.
{ To Seek Refuge }
{ The Clearing }

-- Various discoveries are shared publicly, allowing everyone to know more about what is being dealt with. The birds are scouts for the hivemind, and many of the animals acting as its soldiers. Common drive seems to be spreading infection and pushing the world to starvation and sickness.
{ The Nature of the Blight Intelligence }
{ General Research }

-- The dragon appears in Linlea and devastates the fields and crops of the Isles. The Isles are forced into a system of rationing after their food supply is crippled. Astrum begins sending shipments of food to their southern neighbors to help with the crisis of starvation and overpopulation. The people of Astrakhan send their aid and supplies of food as well.

-- There is growing unrest among the refugees. Secrets run rampant, dissenters make themselves known in the form of vanadlism around the Isle, and there is distrust among the people. The Kanes, the Rangers, the Ignites, and various other groups fall into disfavor as blame and paranoia is thrown around. Many turn to the leadership of the Kov'Gra'Sek's as a guidance point, due to the secrets and whisperings. Others remain in favor of the Kanes and Rangers, despite dissent.

-- A group of mercenaries called The Black Company make themselves known and advertise as a group for hire that will combat the Entity's threats for pay.
{
The Black Company }

-- The Kanes spearhead an expedition to a cave rumored to be one of the original sources of the infection. Many ablebodied fighters, researchers, and explorers set out under the guise of going to Queensport but are instead lead into the heart of the desert. They encounter unspeakable horrors during a harrowing three day slog underground where mutated spider-scorpions with human teeth fight against them. They discover an apparent rift into another world, among other things. The Kanes begin preparations for several expeditions to follow.
{
Spelunking }
{
The Nature of the Cave }

-- A devastating visit where the dragon, swarms of thousands upon thousands of birds, and horrific gryphon hybrids descend on Linlea after weeks of silence and apparent ease. The Citadel is hit hard by the dragon while the hospital is beset by the hybrids. Many of the ballista that were set up as defenses were taken out by the dragon during the attack. James Varyn was taken by the dragon, and Elizbeth Kane killed by a beast that had not been seen beforehand.
{
An Unwanted Visit }
{
Long Armed Pillager }

-- Given the chaos within Linlea, many begin to feel that the Isle grows too dangerous as well. Ships begin to make their way north to Astrum in waves, and riots ensue as the Island has to face off with waves of desperate people.
{
The Riots of Astrum }

-- Despite the Kanes not being present, the next of their cave expeditions embark to the south to the mainland city of Mockingbay, led by Raalvara Mason and Kamaoe Hakiaz. The explorers descend deep into the depths of the cave to fight all manner of unknown creation, and to find one of their own that had been left in the darkened depths.
{
Spelunking Again }
{
Hardback Prowler Drake}
{
Sparkling Scissor Bug }

-- Reports of the mainland say that there are no wildlife left. Anything that is spotted is infected, and unable to be eaten. The forests, plains, and hills hold a silence now.
{
A Great Emptiness }

-- In light of the public knowledge of the Entity's ability to create replica copies, The Lord and Lady of the Isles order a quarantine of any and all people entering the Isle after a false James Varyn appears. They are to submit to a blood test before they are permitted further on the Isle.
{
Quarantine }

-- Andre Ursae invites scholars and researchers to The Cradle to discuss the nature of the Blight, and he proceeds to hand out posters in various cities. His own city, Slyannen, is rumored to be on fire and cut off due to the spread of the disease there.
{
A Meeting at the Cradle }
{
A Poster in the Cities }

-- A hulking mass of a knight makes his presence known during an altercation with Linlea, which is discovered to have the voice of James Varyn, but a monstrous form underneath the armor. There is chaos while the citizens and Black Company try to fight against it. It is eventually sent into the depths of the sea and presumed destroyed.

-- After The Harvester was slain in the caves near Mockingbay and surrounding area seemed to bound back to health. More animals now seen and the land seems to be healing around there.
{
Regrowth }

-- James Varyn returns and is confirmed to be himself. He does, however, have a glowing ring around his eyes like Gael Dugald and Olive Kov'Gra'Sek.

-- The Black Company leaves Linlea and sets up separate operations within Alderwood Cove, being the lands under the control of Lady Sophia Dugald.

-- Elizabeth sends out letters to notable people around Isles to bring them in for a meeting near the citadel. She speaks openly about plans of attack, and begins to organize a series of training sessions to help everyone fight the Blight's creations. Methods are discussed, such as the use of salt, and the dangers of the dust within the caves.

-- The first round of lessons to deal with the Blight are with Ater Impes. Medical lessons to cover basic wound care to help keep people alive in the caves as long as possible until the proper physicians can arrive.
{
Medical Lessons }

-- The second round of lessons to deal with the Blight are with Jaden Seeker and Charles Kane. Combat lessons to cover basic and beginner methods to help combat the Entity's creatures within the caves.
{
Training Montage }

-- Andre Ursae offers his own lesson on anatomy and effective ways to kill and maim opponents, to be useful in combat as well.
{
Anatomy Lessons }

-- The first of two ships sail from Linlea to make a return to the desert cave. A band primarily made of mages and fighters returns to find that the cave is drying out now. A stillness and a silence as they delve deeper, and the living parts that had once been flesh were now akin to drying husks. It was still alive, but weak. The party discovers the rift once more, which closes as a presence made itself known. The Bottomless Well, as it called itself, attempted to speak and bargain with the party. Offering rewards and whispering promises to those that would help it. The creature was able to compel the party members and alter their minds, causing some to see debilitating visions. Others found their senses completely backwards. Many were compelled to walk to the edge of boiling acid and drop their weapons in. The creature was killed, and the cave withered and died within the instant.
{
Into the Depths Again }
{
The Second Desert Expedition Report }

-- In the days after the desert cave withered, the feeling of being watched vanished across the continents. Birds dropped dead from the sky, or suddenly flew elsewhere, and the looming presence of eyes being on you at all times disappeared. However, reports in the north seem to suggest more is going on near the Halbed cave, as fisherman have disappeared and abandoned their village.
{
Who Watches the Watcher? }

-- Thordil releases research done into the obsidian fortifications of the monstrous replica of James.
{
Strike Without Hesitation }

-- The second of two ships sail from Linlea to make a trip into an unexplored yet related cavern. A band breaches into the icy depths and find themselves afflicted with a sudden bout of sleep and dreams in which The Dreamer showed them visions and propoganda. The creature attempts to manipulate them with beliefs, ideas, and visions of The Entity's perfect world. They are ferried through a series of visions and dreams, with many partaking in The Dreamer's forbidden fruits. James Varyn begins the attack on the creature, which led to strife among the party and those who had eaten of the fruit. When the creature is slain, they awaken within the cave nearly frozen to death and clinging to life.
{
Into the Depths Again }

-- A newspaper begins to gain momentum as the Kublai the dwarf begins to tell his own stories of the Blight, and of recent events based on interviews done upon the Isle.
{
The Adventurer's Watch }

-- The earthspawn Kam releases a report of her findings within the cold cave.
{ The Cold Cave }

-- Sir Gael Dugald gathers the people within Linlea for a meeting within the Citadel. Knowledge is shared and plans formulated to clear the Forest and search for its last bastion.
{ The Calm Before the Storm }

-- James Varyn calls the devout of the kingdoms back to Storm's Landing to a series of sermons at the Cathedral. Over the course of the next few weeks, he leads pilgrimages and sermons to seek favor and restitution with the gods. During the Pilgrimage, the Blight dragon is seen flying overhead to the southwest.
{ Sought at the Gate }
{ Keeping Faith }
{ Pilgrimage }

-- Sir Gael Dugald mobilizes his retinue to begin the siege against the forest. Upon entering the forest, they find very little in the way of wildlife or threat, aside from a handful of lingering animals. It is determined that there is no cavern there that houses the entity.
{ So Begins the End }

-- Anything that remains Blighted seems to be moving westwards, while sightings grow few and far between.
{ Before the Storm }

-- Kam sets up a group of explorers to help clear the way from Storm's Landing, to the swamp, to Compendium, and to the Blood Rose Glen.
{
Clearing the Way }

-- Kopii and Leofaren are able to reverse engineer the Blight and create fungal spores that eats the Blight.

-- The swamps worsen as sources for the Blight in the water and in the plants. It is incredibly dangerous to traverse through.
{
An Infestation }
{
Blight Infestation }

-- Ashna and the Kane Twins organize an intervention with the Formist Kopii Grey after it came to light that he made a deal with a plague parasite living in his eye. After attempts at convincing him to remove it failed, the eye and plague parasite was forcibly removed. Kopii sent to the hospital to heal up, and a notice being made public about the event following the ordeal.
{ A Report of Kopii Grey }

-- The earthspawn Kam leads a group of adventurer's deep into the heart of the swamps and forest to clear out any remaining beasts they may linger. They go from Storm's Landing, to the earthspawn home in the swamp, to Compendium and then to the Bloodrose Glen.
{ Clearing the Way }

-- Those who ate the Dreamer's fruit in the cold Northern cave begin to have dreams and visions of something to the west, while the remaining Blighted wildlife and monsters seem to migrate to some unknown point in the west. Attacks and incidents from Blighted creatures are few and far between.
{ Before the Storm }
{ Whispers of Home }

-- Thorne's fields are slowly worked and renewed to enable a new harvest. Podric and his retinue arrange for a shipment of grain to be sent to Linlea to help with the refugee crisis.
{ Saving Grace }

-- Despite the lack of creatures and incursions, Linlea falls to a severe outbreak. At first suspected to be because of Podric's grain shipment from previously Blighted fields, it is discovered that someone has gone through and poisoned the water supplies. The entire city becomes ill, and The Kanes and Ashna arrange a city wide evacuation. The Kanes declare that everyone come to Queensport that wants to investigate the happenings in the west, while all others find safe places in other city outside of Linlea. The perpetrator of the attempted genocide goes undiscovered.
{ An Outbreak }
{ Into the West }
{ Linlean Evacuation }

-- The able bodied and willing converge on the shores of the deadlands, which are discovered to be aptly named soon after. A rift tearing itself across the deadlands is discovered, where Blight seems to grow and cover the land. From the chasm comes the feared Blight Dragon. Thanks to the efforts of the Evicsts and fighters, the Dragon is brought down and dealt a killing blow from Asero. As well, an army of the remaining Blight creatures pour from the chasm for an assault before pulling back and regrouping in the depths. The next day, after much needed rest, the heroes descend into the chasm. They encounter creatures that call themselves Keepers, which are the protectors of the Entity's hoard of treasure and trinkets. It is discovered that these events go through cycles of slumber and wakefulness, and now it is preparing for a cycle of slumber. Regardless, one by one they are dispatched. Like the desert cave, the stone was white and fleshlike, which revealed a further cavern beyond. A towering, hulking monstrosity assulted them as it walked through the cave's stomach acid. Thanks to the final strike from Sir Florian, the massive Keeper was felled. Several people went further into the cavern to discover a vessel of sorts, begging to die. It revealed the The Entity, now known as Qlippoth, is not dead and is far below the ground and beyond any of our reach. The vessel is killed and the connection and life of the cavern severed until it began to wither and die.
{ A Final Stand }

-- Slowly the lands begin to repair and heal. The Ashen Blight remains, but does not progress as far as it once did. It merely remains as a sickness that can be recovered from, and seemingly bearing no further connection to the mental powers it once did. The animals slowly return, and the plants regain health. It would seem, at least for now, that Altera had survived the onslaught that Qlippoth had wrought for them.
{ A New Dawn }

-- Present.

That was a marathon to write. If you feel I have left out anything that would be deemed "common knowledge" let me know.

I also tried to make it as fair to all the various groups as I can. :)

This is so helpful! What a gem!

Small question of something I've been wondering for a while; when people get infected and not treated, do they die or do they turn into an insectoid plague creature? Excuse my ignorance!
Once I know that, I'll be fully up to date thanks to this beauty of a thread!

Personally I'd imagine it's a case by case basis.
that'd be very exciting! With undead it's always been very clear, but a disease that has different effects on different people sound interesting!
