I put together a pintrest board with some photos of middle eastern and north african architecture that I thought were interesting. See https://pinterest.com/rauyran/qarth/

I've been prototyping some of the look and feel on a single user world. Here's a gate (based on a real one called the Qur'an Gate in Iran)

The roads are simple, but use a sandstone pattern to add interest.

Here's an example of a middle class, single storey home. There's a fire pit with communal seating and sleeping area. Lower class homes would be smaller and would be butted up against one another. Higher class homes would have a second storey. There will be a number of palaces too.

This city looks totally amazing! I like the fact it's in the desert.

I would like to help you with building this. I'm pretty much creative and can decorate stuff. I am currently building one of the buildings from the link you provided. When I'm finished I will attach it so you can decide if I am creative enough to help you.

EDIT #1:
I will send the world to you via private message.

Thanks Rockealypse. Looking forward to seeing what you build.

Bear in mind that I've only just bought the region so I only have a single chunk at the moment! I can't wait for the Southern Wilds to open so I can get mining and earning again.

The desert is big enough for another town I think. The Golden Crusade are welcome to visit Qarth if they have money to spend in the inns and markets.

I know Qarth is awesome but it would be better if you had a more original name xP
Yeah, I'm not great at names. I don't think this one is overused though. There is an advantage to using pre-existing names though. It means people who recognise it have a sense and flavour of what it might be like already. I can build on that and adapt some of that atmosphere to Alteran lore and history.

Argument over or I start giving out warnings.

Excellent settlement, an actual desert town is always something nice to see :D

Phew, I stayed out of the argument above but as I mentioned earlier in the thread I don't think Qarth is an overused name. In the end it's just a name and the build we make, citizens that join and visitors that come to RP there will define what the atmosphere of Qarth is.

In the meantime I managed to acquire a few more plots and have started work on the gate I showed at the beginning. It's pretty large so it has rooms inside that can be used as temporary bases and storerooms for a few residents. There's no portal yet so getting there to visit means a long trek west from Irem. We'll make you welcome if you do manage to cross the desert.

Your in game name: Canluum
Your character´s race: Human
Why you wish to join Qarth: Looking for a new town to help out with materials
Do you want to build an embassy for a House: No

Just looking for a town to help build up. I enjoy (not sure why) digging so I can help gather materials to help the town grow. I'm willing to farm materials for projects etc.. and help build and maintain farms of all sorts. I would like land to build freely on (that complies with the town rules) Not looking for titles or names, just a place to call home and "work"

Change the name, please. We don't mind people taking inspiration from literature or media, but porting it directly can't be done.
We have our own lore, we don't need someone else's :p
