Arcturus lore (Moved from Magisterium category)

Valonyx

Lord of Altera
(Author's note: Arcturus does not exist anymore, as the House is dead. This thread exists solely in the purpose of protecting the history of what once was a great nation and a decades-long dynasty. Furthermore, a good deal of the current Régime we are building is a result and is strongly affected by the ancient actions of Arcturus.)

(General House description)

-ARCTURUS-

The Lion's might and the Griffin's majesty
Natus ab Aurum, generantur ex bellum, pro virtus potens est

Introduction:
While Arcturus is not one of the oldest houses, its roots run much farther then the House itself. Being an Arcturian is a way of life, a doctrine and a tradition. From the beginning as warriors of the Light to prosperous and noble lords of Might, they have always distinguished themselves, both for good and bad, from the others.

The initial ideas started with Magnus Arcturus IV, who at the beginning founded the Golden Crusade, an holy order that sought to fight all corruption and evil that had a foothold on the realm of Altera. After leading several wars, defending the innocent, and maintaining their power on the lands, the crusaders successfully started an holy town where they could govern their demesne and their fortresses. With the cult of Kilrox, once strong, shattered and the powers of Grief vanishing, the holy crusaders found themselves with nowhere to go and no one to give their protection to. With their war ended, they decided to find a new goal. A more peaceful one, centered on economy and prosperity.

Lord Magnus then decided, along with a couple of old war friends, to join their riches and focus on building an House, Arcturus. The Lords of Might, once holy warriors, now rich lords in quest of power, were born.

Arcturus has seen many events and many times. It is one of the rare houses that can claim to have links with almost all of the others. At the time of the first Game of Crowns, Arcturus at first joined the Federation, a union of regions that was bent on putting Lord August on the silver throne. The federation however soon collapsed and Houses Arcturus and Arduin united to fight Lonmar for the Throne. Ultimately, Lonmar won that war, and Draco was named King of Altera. For the times while Draco was monarch, Arcturus focused on building and developing, even if It was greatly displeased with the King's regime.

Then, a while after, troubles came and changes happened in Port Silver. Harateth himself, God of Justice and Nobility, came from the Heavens and named a new ruler. A Queen, Leminth of Arduin, was named to the Silver throne. Arcturus was again going to abide, although displeased, to the Silver Crown once more. Shortly after her Majesty was named, rumors came of a new Exodus, a succession of events that would force most of Altera's population to once more change worlds. Arcturus, meanwhile, had its old homeland attacked by Queen Grief. Harlaus, the holy city, jewel of the desert, was corrupted, most buildings teared apart and towers taken down by Grief's tentacles of chaos. We were forced to rebuild. Bigger, Stronger, Better. This is why we build a mighty seat of power, Castle Stoneheight.

Present time.

Arcturian Culture:

Culture and architecture
The Arcturians have a very special culture, by special I mean unique. It rassembles elements from cultures all around the world, such as traditional rites from the Reach, cultural improvements from the surroundings of Mirage, but also a unique architecture, mixing military and commercial decorations in order to create a vast and singular building type.
Politics and warfare
The Arcturians prefer a severe but just political system, rather then a possibly corrupted democracy. They base their society on Order and the readings of the Gods of Might.
The military prowess of the Arcturian armies is often remarkable and they tend to prefer ranged, large and open ground battles then forest guerilla.
Everyday culture and doctrines
The true arcturians tend to have a strong national feeling towards their lordship and their demesne, and they would gladly fight to preserve their honor.
Arcturian names tend to end with -us, -in, -as, rather uncommon name terminations. This is explained by the isolation of their culture, and the development of their own national doctrines.

Arcturian Military Regime:

I want to put an emphasis on this. While August and Cromarcky, for example, are houses built on trade and have all the rights to hold a stronger presence in that domain, Arcturus is a house built on war. It was created at first for the Golden Crusade, a war organization, and has fought countless wars and battles throughout its history. Arcturus is able to boast the power of its mighty legions and regiments, hordes of veterans and hardened knights, trained and equiped with the latest technologies in matter of war. Arcturus also has the Engem clan at its side, a clan of strong and fearless barbarians wielding war paints and large weapons, usually in the front lines, hacking through infantry.
Arcturus's military caste is complex, having several commanding systems. Generals can vary from Grand Tacticians to Field Commanders, and most outside will find the Arcturian system too complicated, but arcturians themselves thrive on Order and Discipline.

The Grand Lion Empire:
Arcturus is now the ruling dynasty of the Grand Lion Empire, a realm sprawling most of the southern part of the middle continent, and considering expansion. The current Emperor and holder of the Golden Throne, Arthorius Arcturus III, or the Griffin, son of the honorable Marcus the Lionheart, gained the independence for his imperial realm after the beloved queen Leminth sacrificed herself, destroying the Silver Crown by doing so, and liberating the different realms of the shackles of the dreaded Crown. The Grand Lion Empire, also commonly refered to as the Arcturian Empire, is an extremely lawful and orderly realm, with a doctrice based on absolute faith in the Trinity and the Church and a strong military might. The Justice system of the Empire, while harsh, is absolute and uncorrupted.

(Description of what used to be the Imperial Law)
~THE IMPERIAL LAW~

Introduction:

The Great Lion Empire is an extremely lawful, honor and might aligned society. It's people are raised to believe that thieves, murderers, bandits and others of this misbegotten kind do not even deserve any kind of pity or fairness. In the Empire ruled by an authoritative, incorruptible and fiercely religious government, the law is brought at every occasion, and is never overruled. Arcturians strongly believe that justice and discipline bring peace, and that any kind of disturbance is to be removed, in order to allow the realm to peacefully continue it's activities and economic development.
The Justice procedures:

In the Lands of the Empire, anyone caught acting in any mischievous evil-intended or illegal way will be brought to custody as fast as possible. Loyal citizens who help in catching criminals and villains will be heavily rewarded by the Imperial open hand, by any means needed, may it be protection, riches or resources.

The Peregrinus, or Crusade (Also called third Legion), is in the Empire to protect it's people, along with the other divisions of the glorious Imperial armies. The Peregrinus exist only for the purpose of stopping any kind of crime or action that would go against the Golden Throne. If a citizen is taken into custody or asked to cooperate with the soldiers of the third Legion, It isstrongly recommended to obey at once. The Empire does not have patience for disobedience, and any kind of refusal will lead to more important accusations. It is of great importance to obey all orders, for the will of the Emperor and the Gods is to bring prosperity and hope over the heads of their people, not to bring unnecessary death orpunishment.

Furthermore, any kind of support and aid given to criminals or convicts will be dealt with the same punishment given to the helper, may it be a fine, prison or execution.
The crimes, accusations and condemnations list:

Lower crimes:

-Stealing
-Vandalism
-Disobedience
-Verbal attack
-Attempt at physical attack on other civilians
-Minor Political unrest (For example; minor attempts at creating troubles in the Empire)
-Economical unrest (For example; attempting to benefit off of clients, as a merchant)
Middle crimes:
-Physical attack on other civilians
-Attempt at physical attack on imperial officials (Army, government, Merchant's Union members)
-Political unrest (see above for example)
-Participation in rebel movements
-Attempt at murder on other civilians
-Attempt at assassination of other civilians
-Kidnapping other civilians
-Arson
Higher crimes:

-Physical attack on Imperial officials (army, government, Merchant's Union members)
-Major Political unrest
-Major participation/leadership in rebel movements
-Murder of civilians
-Assassination of civilians
Highest level of crimes:

-Attempt at attacking the Golden Throne and it's holder
-Murder of Imperial Officials
-Assassination of Imperial Officials
-Open opposition to the Imperial system and the most serene Emperor.
-Heresy
Punishments:

Punishments to lower and middle crimes:

May vary from large fines to time in prison, from one day to ten years, depending on the importance of the crime.
Punishments to middle and higher crimes:

Prison time, from five to twenty years, possibility of the punishment of death administered.
Punishments to higher crimes of great importance:

The punishment is generally death by either hanging or burning on the gallows, although it is possible to gain redemption by giving help to the Golden Throne.
Punishment to the highest level of crimes:

Death is the first, only, and definite punishment to those crimes, by the gallows, the execution block or the rope.
For the despicable crime of Heresy, only fire may purge the souls of the unrighteous.
The Court System:

While the punishment system may seem extremely severe at first, it is important to notice that never will there be any unfairness or inequalities present. In the face of the Emperor and the holy God of Justice, Harateth, criminals in the Empire will always be judge fairly and will have the right to speak if they wish to. They will also be granted the rights to meet their loved ones before their sentence is accomplished, and the right to ask for a single, reasonably obtainable object or favor from the Imperial Throne.

The Crusade is merely present to bring peace and prosperity, nothing more. However, they will maintain a severe policy, and no crimes will be tolerated in the face of our Holy Lords.
''Praise Harateth, God of Justice.''

*As you are on your usual way for the Naught Inn, you notice a strange cart, probably not from the surroundings of Port Silver. You decide to stray a little from your path and check out the cart. the cart, made of an exotic mix of white clay and spruce wood, has a blue & gold awning. There seems to already be a moderate amount of citizens surrounding the back of the cart, the group being mostly made of nobles and their suites. As you get nearer, you notice a man, in a light shining white armor with a large golden crest of a lion engraved in the middle of his breastplate. The man is holding a book, a small but seemingly well made tome, on which are golden imprints. The book's cover seem to be made out of dark-blue dyed fine leather. Several boxes can be seen behind the man, and you are able to see that they seem to be full of copies of the tome. You decide to join the crowd, in order to be able to hear what the man is shouting.

''...great changes, indeed, are coming into the main continent of Altera. With the united might of Arcturus and its allies, the new Empire will be born. Yes, I tell you, Arthorius Angelos Arcturus, son of the famed Marcus the Lionheart, has decided that the will of Arcturus shall be made clear once and for all, and will follow the teachings of the tome written by his father, that describes our glorious ideals and the mighty goal of Arcturus. This tome shall be distributed to the nobility, the church and the burghers of Altera, without any distinction, so that all shall know of the Empire's Rise''

The man then proceeds to distribute several copies of the book to the public, and when most of the nobles and burghers finally received theirs, the man closed his cart, and started going for another city.*

Age of Imperialism

''Arc 1, Chap 1.

I define an empire as a group of countries, colonies under the reign of supreme authority with the capability of growth and prosperity.

The idea of an 'empire' has developed in my mind since I was a 18 years old boy and my uncle had told me of my father. My father was a rebel leader in short, from the Southern Wilds he led two thousand riders into the Northern Kingdoms to take down the Noble Lords who denied the South. Through his rather short campaign he 'conquered' in total three forts and a village. He then foolishly went to a 'fake' peace treaty, and that is where my uncle told the story ended.

But the word 'Conquered'... What does it mean? I see it as being overcome by a more powerful force, but being conquered is to be taken by a 'force', not some political manipulation. My father and other 'Conquerors' like him were uneducated in the terms of the politics. And politics consists with the activities to do with the governance of a country or colony. Every 'conqueror' known to the history of Altera has not sustained the lands they have taken and therefore they will not last the ages. These lands are not sustained, becase they were conquered by uneducated 'heroes', who have not seen the reality of what comes next.

But what comes next? After you have taken or established lands?... You have to learn about this new land, the people who inhabit it and the other lands around it, and your governance will revolve around this, and it is crucial you cater to theses factors, otherwise your lands will not be able to self-sustain and will be a shadow, a ghost, a tale to be told to a child about an 'heroic battle' that took place.

And when you look at the ink i have just written, the factors of sustaining land... Isn't that what a Queen or a King does?

Chap 2.

A king or Queen will cater to their Kingdom and make sure it survives, but they do not look at the opportunity to better their people in another form, Growth. Queen Leminth and King Draco had the clear and open path to grow through the means of force or political manipulation, because they were both educated, they have had a past which has sculptured them to cater their people, but they were limited at growth.
There are several factors for why they choose not to grow, such as Queen Grief, though her power was less gripping at the time, there leaders couldve made their country grow, but they were afraid to break the peace they had made, because they feared events in which they would lose what they had gained by the threat of other 'Conquerors'.

You see, with an entire Realm under the governance of a single leader, there are problems, such as the different races and their views and religion, which are bound to generate problems which are seeded into the Kingdom and when reaped there will never be a clean harvest. And so, if separate leaderships are started, then it delimits the problems of the 'Supreme Kingdom', because the separate leaderships have their own laws which apply only to their people and it caters to them.

Overall, with an authority placed over an 'empire' (collection of lands, countries) then they can better contribute to their people as they do not need to cater for Altera as a whole, only their empire.

Chap 3.

Imperialism will work in one empire in Altera, but it will work better if the whole of Altera turned to Imperialism.

With a few empires spread across Altera along with their self governance they can rule better over their lands because the weight and control is an easier burden. This will allow rulers to improve their economy through investment and focus into education, raw materials and foreign trade, because they now have the resources, but also aren't limited by the 'Supreme Kingdom' where the focus is on bringing peace between races. The races in Altera have different views on each matter and this causes difficulties and can result in all-out physical conflicts,

I'm not suggesting that with Imperialism, there won't be conflicts, but this will only happen through unjust rulers who are greedy in the game to conquer all. Imperialism can consist of multiple races, because the work of a ruler is delegated through country rulers to ease the burden which will make the colonies or countries run easier and perform on a higher level than the 'Supreme Kingdom'.

Imperialism will succeed with the focus on Diplomacy and the colonization of lands. For an empire to start they would need to be ruled by a strong ruler or House with sufficient amount of resources to begin the sculpturing of their empire.

Chap 4.

The positions for Imperialists would work with the 'Ruler', 'king' or 'Emperor' on top, which would rule and oversee the empire. Then below him would be the 'kings' who govern the 'emperor's' countries for him. The emperor will have a council made of his kings, advisers, treasurers and such, and those 'king/rulers' can also have councils of their own. Below the Kings would lie Princes/Princesses, then Dukes, Earls, Counts, Barons and Knights.

This order of Authority stabilizes an easier control over the empire as the load is delegated, making it a more democratic rule. When compared to the 'Supreme Kingdom', where there is one ruler over the whole of Altera with one council, they will find it difficult, maybe even near impossible to keep a stable Kingdom. Why?
Because even at this moment the North is an un-communicating aria with the Queen. Houses Lonmar and Yearnen still remain up there, but do not partake with the Queen because they are not fond of the Queen and her ruling, as she has total power over all of Altera.

Imperialism has an Emperor and minor Kings or Rulers to govern over his lands where they can easily communicate with each other on matters of new laws, investment and terms of war.

Written by Marcus, Lord of Arcturus and future Emperor of the Arcturian Empire.''

(book ends here)

And soon, at long last, the Golden Lion's might shan't be stopped.
Novus, shall rise...

Long live the Grand Lion Empire!
(Description of what used to be the Imperial Legions)

LEGIONS OF THE GOLDEN THRONE

Arcturus has certainly one of the most complicated and seemingly stupidly slow military strategy system/tactics. However, the legions of Novus are also perhaps one of the most trained, well-equiped and coordinated forces in the Northern Kingdoms.

Mortem Legionem, third legion and specialists of invasion wars.
The armies of Arcturus are divided into a legion system, each having a different chain of command, allowing for them to be semi-autonomous and not have to rely on other commands, other then the Golden Throne itself. The army, as of the beginning of the rule of Arcturus III, comprehended four legions;

-The Honora Praesideo, or honor guard, the first legion, veterans sworn to the protection of the high command and the Golden Throne.
-The Peregrinus, or Crusade, the second legion, responsible for the maintaining of Order, Law and Might throughout Novus.
-The Mortem Legionem, the third legion, the first lines of the will of Novus.
-and lastly, the Fortium, or valiants, the last legion, main backbone and defense of Arcturus's might.

Honora Praesideo, defenders of the Throne

Fighting styles
Most arcturian soldiers are trained to fight with spears, polearms, large shields and all types of swords. Hammers and axes are rarely seen in the army, and aren't actually manufactured for military purposes in Novus. Concerning armors, it is widely known that subtlety is not one of Arcturus's main strenghs, and it is obviously visible in the way soldiers act and dress. Most members of the Fortium and Mortem legions wield heavy, movement restricting armors, while the Peregrinus goes for lighter armor types, to allow for lightning strikes. Veterans of the honorae praesideo, rarely in the front lines (Except in rare cases, such as the second exodus, where the Honorae Praesideo was sent alongside the Fortium to aid Leminth of Arduin), wears mostly golden, ceremonial armors, or medium weight equipment when events require it. Novus's armies tend to be extremely bad at ambushes or guerilla tactics, a flaw that enemies can easily use. However, as perfect coordination and cohesion are upheld in the legions, Arcturus has been known to be widely successful in open field battles, rarely losing terrain to foes. Honor and valor are also strongly believed in, which signifies that arcturian soldiers will /rarely/ use dishonorable tactics, such as backstabbing or dirty fighting.
