    Port Silver: Harbour Town
    [IMG]

Now is the chance for everyone to participate in building the capital. Port Silver will be divided in different districts, each built by different people. We will hold contests and select the best applications for building the capital.

Below will be the general specifications of what the Harbor Town must look like. Applicants can submit their ideas and inspirations, and examples of their work. The better you show what you plan to build, the better we are able to judge your application. We may decide on one or several winners, this depends on the type of applications we receive.

To get a feeling of the surrounding area and the location of the harbour town, it is recommend to visit the area yourself. From spawn, take the bedrock portal that says Port Silver (new)

This is the location of the Harbour Town: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/46464258/tijdelijk/location.png
This is its location on the Dynamic Map: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/46464258/tijdelijk/districts.png

    Requirements
    • The Harbour Town is the location where new players are allowed to live when they first join the server. The town should make this possible.
    • The docks area on the left holds boats for show(so they are not actually used) and drydocks. The transport and docks area on the right holds boats, airships and a tower for portals. These might be built by a seperate person, but if you have good ideas then you may propose them.
    • There must be variation in height. The current area is quite flat and I cut out a big chunk near the harbour, but that's only to show that the harbour will probably end up being close to the water level. You are however completely free in changing that however you see fit, and you should.
    • The Harbour Town must look very medieval, with buildings made mostly out of logs, planks, sand and sandstone. It is a very poor district.
    • Buildings must be in close proximity of eachother, creating many stray alleys and corridors.
    • The building style must be chaotic and (look) unplanned.
    • Preferably there will be canals of some sort.
    Inspiration
Here are some pictures to give a general idea on what it will look like. Remember you are free and encouraged to use your own creativity.
You don't need to stick to the shape or look for the buildings, but these are good pictures to show what the streets should look like. Buildings are very close to eachother, things aren't fancy. Buildings are mostly made out of wood and sandstone/sand and logs. Mostly these pictures set a good mood for the town:

Bowerstone from Fable is a good example of the 'type' of town we're looking to create. Bowerstone itself is too modern, ours should be more medieval. But it sets the mood quite well:

It is not easy to find good pictures of a medieval harbour, or something that would fit our new capital very well. But here are a few:

    Building Procedure
The entire capital will be built legit, with all materials bought off of the Auction House by us. After your application has been approved we will discuss more in detail how we will make it fit. You will need to provide us with information on what kind of materials you will need. You will also be provided with iron tools.

If you apply you need to be serious about this and be able to complete the build within a reasonable amount of time. You don't need to slave away at it day and night, but it's not going to work if you come online for a few hours a week to place a few blocks. The set up is that you will only be building, and not gathering any resources. We will handle the resources for you.

Remember that upon request more terraforming can be done. For example we can add more mountains, hills, or remove a bit of land. Take this opportunity to order me around.. ;)
    Application Template:
Applications are done by one person and communication is done with one person alone. However, you are free to allow anyone you wish to help you.
We expect quite a bit to be posted as examples and inspiration. This is the capital, we must have a clear picture of what it is going to look like. You can do this through ingame examples, drawings, pictures of layout. Anything that paints the right picture for us will work. You will atleast need to show us some basic ideas on how to do the layout and an ingame example of a street with houses and buildings. Anything more than that will greatly increase your chances. We understand that some people don't like to plan their builds and we will respect that, just do what you can.

Hmmm... I cant apply because I'm too much involved in Stormhold.
But I thought you could maybe hire a team of creative players to make the decoration after the Harbour area is build up. They could make the interior of houses or place some flowers and hedges. I had this idea because in the old Port Silver their were just the houses and the building but It was quite dead and boring. If the admins would hire such a team, I would apply for this.

Do we not need to define how many blocks down people can build? For cellars etc...?

And should be not be making a decision on the level at which the city wide sewers will be? I assume slum areas would be too poor for each individual building to be connected up so I'd guess the sewers connect to the canals in this particular part of the city.
  5. Stevey

Yeah they would connect to the canals. Good points though, would need to think of how deep cellars could go maximum.

Depends on how much freedom you want to give to the people that live there building wise. If you're talking about the making of the city itself, I wouldn't imagine cellars to be too much of an issue, as long as they arent too wide.

Sewers? I'd love to build some sewers, but theres nothing in the OP about them. I imagine they'd be perhaps two or three blocks below normal ground level (the pathway in my screenshots would be ground level) which would possibly restrict cellars on those ground level based houses. Maybe to compensate ground level based buildings would be low level commerce like fishmongers rather than residential housing?

I would also like consideration for a good size Inn/Tavern near the docks for the community to socialise. Preferably near the real boats.

I was planning to put a large tavern inside the trade district, along with the auction house and bank. The spawn would be on the central plaza there so everything is easily accesibble and when you type /spawn everyone else will be there socialising in the tavern. Much like it is now around the campfire.

I'm sure lars will correct me if I'm wrong but I really don't think the intention is to give players ANY freedom to build. This comment was made with the architect in mind and their freedom when building their plans.

Any future resident will have no ability to modify or extend in any direction their designated temporary home.

I dont have quite the time to get on this, but if required, i will gladly improvize anything i am told to build.

How long do you estimate it will take: depends on the size of what i'm told to build. several houses in one day, up to a month and a half or two months for the whole city.
Example and inspiration: Aeckerdam. i wish i did take screenshots of it, but you've seen it lars, and i do think my building experience did advance further since those times.

So no build or destroy permissions just switching? Okay, so if we can find a constant size that would work in whatever design is chosen it could be used across the board. Do we even need cellars in these houses? Considering they are poor people and there will be things like underground sewers to complicate, I wonder if cellars would be needed at all?

Well there definitely needs to be sewers. They have been mentioned many times off the record. IMHO they added a lot of immersion and realism to Daggerfall.

2 or 3 blocks below grass level is far too shallow. We need to allocate enough room for cellars and have sewers below that.

If you want the city to be lifeless and boring and no variation then go ahead.

I think you need to re-read the OP. I'm not sure you fully grasp what is being proposed here.

If the streets have been laid i have the perfect team for a sewer job, they did a amazing job in Heavens Reach, and it had a massive server system

Regarding the max dig level, maybe an idea to add is that we make a certain layer completely out of bedrock, henche obstructing deeper digs

No offense but I preferred the Daggerfall sewer design that Cubeydoom and sherbzz came up with. It felt darker and more claustrophobic. I've already put Sherbzz name forward to manage this but I haven't had a chance to speak to him to see how he feels about it ;-)

I might add that this is mainly so he doesn't feel left out of all this. He did a lot of work on the old Port Silver (Daggerfall) and his contributions played a big role in the success of Hollowworld in the early days and now it has been relegated to a Heritage site. It would be nice to include him in some way unless he explicitly states he wants no involvement.

None taken :) the tunnels were indeed not so wide, but they felt so....clean for some reason, but hey taste differs for every person, i'm not planning to live down there anyway :p

so cherbert when are you coming to Holland and have a party ?

They felt clean because they existed well before mossy stone and cracked stone ever existed. A lot more details can now be accomplished with their design.

I'm sure a trip to Holland can be arranged at some point!
  19. Stevey

    Stevey Guest

    Correct

The best, I think, would be to have sewers in the city within the gates, which is more prosperous and have open canals in the slums. We can hold contests for the sewers and pick the best. I'll open up a post in the Council to discuss the rest of the city, but this district was already discussed and planned so I put up the contest here.

Maybe a celebration is in order when we fully finnished the capital ;)

    Back on topic :

good point lars it gives us several aspects and also the ability to combine designs
