Discord (TeamSpeak alternative)

As some of you may have noticed, the server TeamSpeak voice chat service hasn't been available for a little while now; this is because our licence ran out.

The licence we had actually costs money, so we've been looking into free alternatives that still live up to standards and can provide the service we need.

We've been experimenting with a service called Discord; for those of you that haven't heard of it, you can check it out here, but it's quite similar to TeamSpeak in that it provides both voice and chat options for us. It also has a free mobile app, which is something that TeamSpeak charges for.

You can check out the main Discord website here https://discordapp.com/ and once you've made an account, you can join us here https://discord.gg/ZaAappy

Please use your forum username as your Discord username; if we start seeing unfamiliar names, we'll remove access to those unknown users.

We have a limited number of text and voice channels for now, but if you'd like to see some more, check out this thread and make some recommendations! We're also able to set up some unique permissions, so if you'd like your own custom house/guild channel with access restricted to members only, you can also request that here.

Usual server rules apply in Discord so behave and enjoy yourselves :) Staff do have access to all channels, as a heads up.

Also of note; would like to get some feedback on this one once you've tried out the service. If it's no good, we'll look at TeamSpeak/other alternatives.

Haven't logged into the server discord but my RS clan uses it and it's a very good service, especially being free but overall, there's a reason why you have to pay for Teamspeak. Discord is less reliable, lower quality, not perfect in terms of connection quality. However for casual use I've found it ok, it's free so you can hardly complain.

I've often wondered why we were paying for a service that Skype and other programs offers for free. Especially given that 90% of the time the channels are empty. Can you share the dollar amount we'll be saving this way?

Wasn't always that way. Used to be that TS was just as populated, and sometimes more populated, than the server was. At some point staff stopped getting on TS because they got tired of having to constantly interact with players (not saying I blame them), but their absence led to some bad players making TS a pretty terrible place, which made good players leave TS, then the bad players either got banned or got tired of not having anyone to mess with so they left TS. So yeah, dead TS. Save for events, or the once in a blue moon karaoke.

Here's to hoping Discord doesn't suffer the same fate.

I'm not sure what licence we had up until now, so all I can say is an annual fee of somewhere between $30-500 going of TS's current pricing :p sorry mate

Skype is based on individual users. Services like TS and Discord at least give a meeting place without having to give your person skype info out.

If you end up going back to TS, don't bother hosting it on the server (if that's what you're doing, since you need a license I'm guessing you are), just pay a company to host it. It's so much cheaper. Shouldn't be anywhere near the 100s at least.

Discord is A+. I never used TS and can see myself being active on Discord.
I'm genuinely curious. I never used Teamspeak anyway because I'm not chatty enough for that and I've never touched Discord. But what's the difference between the two that would make you more inclined to use one or the other?

Discord can be used in a browser and the interface feels more familiar to services like skype.

TS has more of a focus on voice chat where as Discord has both voice and text

I personally love love love discord so much. There's no lag, everything is smooth and straight to the point. It looks so nicer than discord or skype combined and you can have a little more customization ability.

hi.
