With the Continent beginning to return to normalcy, and Thorne’s commerce and farms beginning to return, Sir Podric Flanders has declared a new set of laws to ensure the Lightbringer’s Peace. *These laws also apply to the lands of Haven, ruled by Lord Francis de Courtnay.*

[O O C]
Arch originally set up the rating as violent due to his general distaste for consent interfering with the actions of characters and wants people in his region(s) to act as they would in reality: with self-restraint, and a good understanding of consequences if the law is not followed.

I have asked for and been given permission to post this thread by Arch, and I have gone over the laws with Arch to make sure there’s nothing he wouldn’t want in his region.

All Laws do not have their specific sentences written in, but it should be noted that they will generally be on the harsher side of things. Maimings, such as blinding, removal of hands, feet, limbs, fingers, etc. should be expected for the worse crimes, though rule nothing out if you think to commit a crime in Thorne. You knowingly consent to potential maiming by committing some act of wrongdoing within Thorne.

[I C]
To ensure these laws are known and enforced, they have been posted in parchment about the city, and criers are stationed every Fireday to spread the laws by word of mouth, for those who have never been educated in reading or writing.

As well, Sir Podric has proclaimed that the City of Thorne has the right to claim justice over crimes against its denizens, even while they may be outside of the City, for manners of trade, travel, or otherwise. Actions against a denizen of Thorne, within or outside the City, is an action against Thorne itself, and will not be tolerated.

Religious Crimes
While within the lands of Thorne, Sir Podric has announced that the formal religion of the City and its surrounding hinterlands belong to the Lightbringer, the Glorious Phoenix, Ignis Synnove. While there is no punishment for private worship of another Deity, there are religious based crimes. A trial of a Religious Crime is significantly more heavy-handed than that of a regular trial.

Apostasy: The act of renouncing one’s faith to the Lightbringer in public, or denouncing the Lightbringer entirely.

Heresy: The act of actively worshipping a Deity of Demons, or one not of the Pantheon. The Demon Deities are considered to be:
Visage, the Enemy of Synnove
Skraag, the Necromancer
Jishrim, the Mad One

Lying: The act of bearing false witness, when asked to speak the truth. While it is understood that lying is a natural occurrence, it is considered a crime when one bears false witness against a crime brought against them. The act of such is seen near as bad as many of the many of the other crimes listed, despite seeming not as serious.

Religious Treason: The act of swearing an oath to the Lightbringer, then breaking that oath, for whatever reason. Mainly attributed to a Warrior or Priest of God, who forsakes their oath of loyalty.

Adultery: The act of breaking one’s vows of marriage, by becoming involved with a person they are not married to. While this may be seen as a testament to the Deity, Sallana, it is just as much a problem of the Lightbringer, as one must speak their oaths to become married. The breaking of this oath is a crime against the Light and will be punished as such.

Public Worship of Another Deity: The act of worshipping another Deity, be they Heretical or not, in the public forums of Thorne, for whatever reason, unless it is sanctioned by the Lord of Thorne, or similar authority.

Possession of Ungodly Items: The act of bringing Heretical items within the City of Thorne, whether they be up for sale, or be on one’s person. This will include: Artifacts, Tomes, Parchments, Posters, and any similar items. They will be summarily seized and burnt to be cleansed in the Light of Synnove.

Trial Crimes
All laws here are those of the mundane sort. From theft to desertion, as many laws as can be recalled are written in, though there is much more room for the circumstance of one’s character and the actions which led up to the crime, to result in a lower or worse sentence.
Crimes that would reasonably be committed anywhere within the Continent apply, The City will attempt to claim jurisdiction over, such as murder, theft, or assault, if they are committed against a resident of Thorne.
Most crimes are simply written in, with their punishments being attached to the specifics of the crime, however, no sentence will go beyond the reasonableness of the circumstances of the crime.

Theft: The act of stealing one’s property, while it is still on their person, whether they be awake or in any state of unconsciousness.

Burglary: The act of stealing one’s property, within their home, shop, or similar establishment.

Breaking and Entering: The act of putting oneself into a property to which they have not been invited, whether through means of force or not.

Assault: The act of laying one’s hands on another, in an unlawful manner, whether it cause harm or not.

Defamation: The act of lying of another’s character, in an attempt to cause dissent against that person.

Forgery: The act of falsifying a document, especially when faking one’s signature or seal upon a letter.

Impersonation of a Figure of Law: The act of pretending to be a figure of law, and in turn, authority. Whether pretending to be a guard, Knight, Lord, or similar figure.

Vigilantism: The act of utilizing the authority of a guard or similar authority, to act against a crime. In most cases, a Vigilante will only be tried in which they act unjustly, or falsely accuse and act against a crime which did not occur. It is possible for a Vigilante to seek temporary authority through the Lord of Thorne.

Disorderly Conduct: Acting against the authority of a Guard, Knight, Lord, or similar figure. This may take the form of ignoring an order, or by outright disrespecting the people who put their own lives at risk, for the betterment of the City.

Disturbing the Peace: May also be called Unruly Conduct, and this constitutes acting out in public in a way that may result in a potential conflict or is in some way disgraceful to the City’s ideals.

False Accusation: The act of creating a crime out of thin air, in the attempt of getting another in trouble with the Law of Thorne, is a vile act, for it is filled with lies. The accused will be tried, and if convicted, will be subject to the same punishments as they crimes they fabricated.

Unlawful Dueling: The act of fighting another person in an agreed upon duel, without the consent of the Governing authority. The duel not need have ended, for any duel that is had without the consent of the Lord of Thorne, is unlawful.

Murder: The act of taking another’s life in unlawful combat, whether it be in a duel or not.

No Trial Crimes
These laws do not generally fit the bill for the regular denizen or visitor of Thorne. Instead, they are written in for those who would be traveling through or around Thorne and its hinterlands, though are no less important.
Any found in the process of committing these crimes will have no trial, and will only be sentenced.

Banditry: Those who stalk about the hinterland of Thorne, to raid its farms, homesteads, and caravans, are of the worst sort, and there is a very small chance that those who commit such crimes will be executed.

Slavery: While in the Empire of Anhald had been of a mind to allow Slavery within its borders, no such laws are in place in Thorne. Any who are found to be in possession of another person, leaving that person with bleak or no chance of becoming a free man, the ‘owner’ is subject to execution, and the victim is granted all their worldly possessions.

People under this section have been told to not enter Thorne, for one reason or another:

James Varyn
After an argument between Sir Podric and Lord Varyn, the two had come to an ‘understanding’ that they would, in a way, no longer deal with one another. This took the form of Lord Varyn being exiled from Thorne, among other things.

Worshippers of Heresy
This declaration is less of one set in stone, but instead a general “Stay Away” to any worshippers of Jishrim, Visage, or Skraag, as well as any other Heretical Gods. Failure to do so will result in harsh punishment, should their Heresy be revealed.
