Geldryn Murqkel

Physiology:
Bat-like in appearance, they carry further elongated limbs and a vague humanoid shape when stretched. Their arms are long and thin, their fingers stretching out and connected by a thin web like membrane. This membrane is what creates the wing of the Murqkel, allowing them to fly and glide with ease. They carry small sharp nails at the ends of their fingers, allowing them to grasp objects, as well. Their legs are free of such webbing, allowing them to move their legs quickly. They carry claws at the ends of their feet to allow them to not only grasp on the ceiling of caves, and their prey. Their colors range from brown to black, with the hair on their head ranging from dark blondes to dark black. They carry very large and rounded eyes, allowing for sight in low light environments and in the aid of finding quick moving objects. They have large ears, giving them the advantage of hearing low frequencies emitted by various animals and hearing the sound waves bouncing off the walls. Their spine extends into a short tail, which they use to guide their flight. They are the largest of the Murqkel, reaching to a maximum wingspan of 3ft and a height of 2ft.

Mutation (Optional):
A mutation or change between the species can include a larger wingspan or odd pattern on their wings. Very very rarely will a Murqkel be albino. It may be more common to be born without a limb, than with albinism. A larger wingspan will affect the width or the size of the membrane, sometimes stretching towards the thighs of the creature.

Sexual Dimorphism (Optional):
There's no major change between the sexes, though one change would be that males carry a scruff of hair at their chest and neck, making them look puffed.

Climate:
Often favoring more humid environments, they avoid harsh colds and may be found in cooler regions, should they have a comfortable home. They’ll be most likely found in the Mediterranean and coastal areas with a high abundance of fruit.

Habitat:
Found more often in the southern forests, they dwell in cavern and cave opening. They may dwell in damp areas such as barns and towers, often times stowing away their food supplies there. Due to the loss of echolocation, they do not venture deep into the dark recesses of caves, but are still able to see in low light environments. Requiring some light to be able to see, they often times hang from tall trees and in small alcoves.

Diet:
They feed off nectar and fruit, many times preferring the fruit. They’ll store them in damp areas, allowing them to ferment or reach peak maturity before eating it. Though many times, leaving fruit to ferment would cause the same reaction of intoxication as it would a human, leaving a dizzy or nauseated Murqkel to wait out the effect. They possess a long tongue in order to be able to lick the nectar from the flower.

Behaviour:
Social creatures with the others of it’s kind, they are often times swarming when finding fruit. They often times will pair up in groups of two or three to scrounge for fruits when rations start to run low. The Murqkel often times nestle to each other in the colder temperatures, seemingly embracing the other in the harsh temperatures. This embrace is often times called ‘furling’. They dwell on the ceilings of caves and other such low light environments, making them wary of bright lights and heavy movements. These creatures often times flee at the sight of people, and are heavily protective of their young. Should a human come close to their young, often times they respond with a more violent attitude, usually swooping down and clawing at the face or arms of a person. When two Murqkel breed, they are often times partners for life. They will nearly, if not always be seen swarming with average fruit bats as well, though the difference in sizes and facial structure giving them away. They treat fruit bats as their own, finding solace in their company and communicating with them through the high pitched squeaks they emit. Though this species of Murqkel does not use echolocation, they still use the calls to attract other Murqkel or distract possible predators in an effort to throw their voice.

Lifespan:
Their lifespan ranges from one year to five, rarely reaching seven years of age. Often times mates will have several litters of one to two offspring.

Aging:
When young they will remain with their mothers while their father goes off to find their food. Young will remain with the parents until their six months of age, where they become one more of the swarm and are ready to create their own families.

Yields:
These Murqkel may yield a very soft fur that can be used for clothes. Their wings may be used for soups and are said to have a sweet taste.

Isandryl Murqkel
Physiology:
The Isandryl Murqkel holds a rougher physique than the Geldryn Murqkel, often being described as rough or raw in nature. They hold smaller eyes, and are often either blind or only able to see in bright light. They range from the darker color spectrum, having browns, blacks, and on rare occasions, Auburn red. They can range from 15cm to 30cm in height. The bones in it’s wings are thinner, and hollow, allowing for a more varied flight as it’s smaller size allows it to move very quickly. The membrane of their wings are thin and elastic, allowing for the wind to be little resistance to them and letting them move freely. They have claw like feet, much like that of a hawk’s allowing for them to grasp things in mid-air. They hold more defined muscles in their thighs, compared to the Geldryn Murqkel. They carry no head hair and have a larger scruff on their necks. They also carry a solitary claw at the top of their wings to allow them to pin their prey down once they’ve stilled. Their wings extend from the top of their underarms to their knees.

Mutation (Optional):
A mutation commonly found in the Isandryl Murqkel would be the abnormal growth of a new appendage or claw. These appendages hold no muscle in them, essentially making them useless.

Sexual Dimorphism:
The females of the species are often larger than the males, though the males hold larger fur scruffs than the females.

Climate:
They favor mid to cool climates, spanning up to cool tundra forests. Though they do not venture into the snows, they can be found where snow may sprinkle from time to time.

Habitat:
From humid rainforests to cooler spruce forests and meadows, these bats often times accommodate to differing temperatures. They often times perch in trees and sleep in caverns.

Diet:
Insectivore in nature, they eat both flying and non flying insects. They are careful to avoid poisonous insects, though are resistant to some of their neurotoxins, as is the case of bees.

Hunting:
They will use echolocation and swoop down on their target, giving them little to no reaction time before plucking the insect from the air. Afterwards, they will perch in a tree or dark alcove to feed. Often times they leave a mess of exoskeleton, though rather enjoy the fleshy insides.

Behaviour:
Less social than their fruit eating counterparts, they still wander in swarms. Using the larger scruffs of fur at their necks and back, they have less need to huddle together, and will only do so with their partner. Often times these bats will be solitary hunters, selfish of their prey. They will only share their food with their partner or offspring, hissing to other Murqkel wishing to steal their prey. They have a nasty bite and will often avoid human contact, fleeing on sight. If a person were to come too close to a Murqkel den, they would find themselves swarmed, yet untouched, as their echolocation allows for them to avoid any contact with the invader.

Lifespan:
They live from 1-4 years on average, in rare occasions up to 6.

Aging:
They will spend the first four months of their life with their parents before they wander off on their first hunt. When two Isandryl Murqkel breed, a male may share one or two more partners, but will only have a select few they latch onto. Often times, the mother raises the child alone, as the father merely protects the group he’s bred with.

Yields:
Large fur tufts used for clothing. Their wings may be used for soups and are said to have a bitter taste.

Vendryl Murqkel

Physiology:
The most feral looking of the Murqkels, they span a large wingspan, reaching upwards of two meters, and a height of one meter. They hold a thin membrane for wings and the usual webbed fingers. Though, unlike the other Murqkel, they hold a separate webbing above the elbow to allow them to cut the wind resistance and help them dive. The Vendryl Muqkel will have a wingspan that extends down towards its tail, where it holds a sharp barb-like tip. Their legs hold powerful claws used to grip onto and stay latched to their prey while they feast. They possess very small eyes, and are often times blind, having to depend on echolocation. Their ears are much larger than that of the other Murqkels, allowing them to hear varying frequencies emitted by other creatures. They also possess very sharp teeth, used for scraping and biting at flesh. Their fur colors range from black to chocolate browns and rarely charcoal grey.

Mutation:
Sometimes the Vendryl Murqkel will be born with two tails, these are often culturally seen as demon spawn.

Sexual Dimorphism:
The only difference between the males and females are the size of the scruffs of their necks. Males having larger scruffs than females.

Climate:
Rather resistant to many climates, they’re often found closer north and deeper south where larger animals are known to roam. They can survive cool winters and tolerate scorching heat.

Habitat:
They have been seen in snowy areas and harsh deserts, as long as large animals, both domestic and wild, are around.

Diet:
They feed off the life essence of animals, blood. They need the high amount of iron and plasma found in the blood to sustain themselves, using those nutrients to keep themselves alive.

Hunting:
Often times they will scrape the flesh of the creature, creating a small puncture and licking the wound of blood. They do not bother to either seal or stop the animal from bleeding to death, often times causing livestock to die.

Behaviour:
Much more violent than the other Murqkels, they tend to prey on any and all large creature they can come across. Often times seen as opportunistic, they will wait until their prey is weak or unaware. Many times, their use of echolocation may give them away to sharp eared prey, though can be easily confused for any other bat. They will grip onto the tree’s trunk when still, resting or waiting. Naturally solitary creatures, they will only pair to mate, and do not stay with their partners. Many times, a male that finds the offspring of another Vendryl Murqkel may even become a target or prey to them.

Lifespan:
Perhaps having the longest lifespan of Murqkels, they can live up to ten years of age.

Aging:
From the age of two months old, they are able to live on their own, being the size of a small frying pan, they will latch onto smaller animals and disguise themselves as average vampire bats. As they grow, they feast on larger prey.

Yields:
Their fur can be used for coats, and wings used for soups, if cleaned properly. Their wings are said to have a taste of beef. Venom that can be used as local anesthetic if harvested properly.

Other:
They carry a numbing venom they scratch into the prey’s wound. It’s used as a local anesthetic to keep the prey unaware.

Much like other rumors, sightings of these creatures have been sparse lately. It is unknown how or why..

(Out of interest of freshening beast lore- these creatures may be endangered now)

Edit: Now extinct in its exact form.
