There was an abuse of an NPC admin shop where a player could trade in a single pumpkin or painting for emeralds. The mistake was made by a fluke on our part, and again in not clearing it as soon as a Mentor reported it because of time issues and things that came up in-real. Once it was publicly known and our staff was aware that it wasn't removed, we made sure to clear it and trace anyone who was involved in its exploitation when it came to the emeralds converted to money.
The proper thing to do when there's something odd and you're gaining money close to 50k per day from one item with previously no value: Report it.
The non proper thing to do: Exploit it.
We allow folk to keep their belongings if they report the bug or issue in the first place. In this case, it was not reported and the ones involved ended up sending their money to other people in large chunks, devolving it in a new region with plots, or buying materials and selling them to others for monetary gain. We have traced most of the coin that was generated in 3-4 days time. And we are still contacting those directly involved. We're able to track these conversions and any way to hide it will be noted. All materials that were sold in light of this to others in markets won't be removed. You may keep those. Any cooperation in someone who exploited the npc would be appreciated.
