"Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds."
~ - ~

Crack… Crack… Crack… Dayter arcs the axe over his head once more, bringing the head down to split an unfortunate piece of wood. Crack… Crack… His labour resonates throughout the forested grounds.

Crack.

Taking a moment to rest, he’d wipe the sweat from his forehead. Looking around, Dayter’s eyes close, relishing the spring breeze that had just moved in. Although, his moment of solace was only short-lived. As his eyes opened, reality set in; he was alone. Dayter’s head now swiveled, attempting to look for any form of consolation. All that was there for him were the horses that he cared after. Feeling his knees grow weak, Dayter drew in a deep breath, regaining his composure. He blinked. Looking towards his home, all he felt was emptiness. His house was desolate, devoid of any other life. Dayter slept in his bed alone each night, as he has been doing for a very long time. He then looked up and over towards the training grounds of Theloa, the green huts peeking over the horizon. The same feeling of emptiness filled his being. No Rangers occupied the barracks. There hasn’t been any to do so. He thought he felt content here, removing the outside world from his mind, blockading himself within the confines of the North. He was wrong.

With Somnastra having moved away to take care of her mother, everything that bound him to Theloa had disappeared. A change needed to take place, and Dayter knew he had to be the one to bring it about. He could no longer lie in wait. He needed to make something of his life again. Looking down at himself, Dayter knew what had to be done. Lodging the axe in the chopping block, he allowed the breeze to blow over himself once more, his hair dancing on his face. Turning quickly, he made his way towards his house, his steps growing as silent and as light as they had once been. Upon entering, Dayter’s features hardened and grew cold. He glanced around the foyer, the house’s high vaulted ceilings now felt low and constricting. Taking a moment to breathe, he stepped towards his room, slamming the door behind himself. The sun shone brilliantly through the windowed wall, to counteract this, Dayter raised a hand towards his face, blocking out the incoming rays. When his eyes adjusted, his head shot towards a lone chest in the corner of the room. Dayter approached this chest, kneeling carefully as he reached it. Slowly, as if this were the last move he’d make, he grasped the sides of the lid, lifting it.

Inside sat his cloak. The one he must don again.

… Crack…

Thunder rumbled in the distance. The sign of a gathering storm.
He must prepare.
