BLACKJACK, STANDARD SIMPLIFIED

Players attempt to score a card value sum of twenty-one (21), or beat the dealer in card value sum. Cards are dealt by the usage of a d10, where a (1) is an ace, (2) - (9) are numbered cards of any suit, and (10) is a face card. Aces are valued at (11) unless this will cause the player or dealer to bust—if this is the case, all aces being held by the player or dealer who is in this case, become valued at (1). Dealer rotates in social settings and is fixed when being run by a house. To simplify further, exclude either or both double downs and splits. Keep track of each card (number) using a notepad or (author’s favorite) Desmos online scientific calculator.

***

TURN ORDER
  1. Players place wagers in any legal sum, where legal sum is defined by the house or host.
  2. Dealer draws two cards but reveals only one (roll d10).
  3. Players are each dealt two cards, both revealed (roll two d10).
  4. Players take turns sequentially, each player interacting with the dealer one-on-one in clockwise order. Players must first decide if they wish to split or double down (see “special cases”).
  5. Having resolved any possible special cases, players are allowed to “hit” as many times as they want (unless doubling down), until they score twenty-one or “bust” (exceed twenty-one). For each hit, a d10 is rolled. Players “stay” when they are satisfied and “pass” when they bust.
  6. Once all players have stayed or busted, the dealer shows his other card (roll d10), then pushes until his total equals or exceeds sixteen. At this point, the dealer must stay.
  7. When—and only when—all cards are settled, the dealer collects wagers from losing players and pays out to winning players accordingly. Dealer wins ties in all cases, except special cases where the dealer’s hand does not total twenty-one.

SPECIAL CASES
  • Two-card Twenty-one
    • When a player is dealt a two-card twenty-one (that is, an ace and a face card), they win instantly if not defeated by the dealer.
  • Seven-card Charlie
    • When the player accumulates seven cards in their hand, they win instantly if not defeated by the dealer.
  • Dealer totals Twenty-one (any card count)
    • All players—regardless of other conditions—are defeated.
  • Double Down
    • A player “doubles down” when they double their initial bet after receiving their initial two cards. Following this action, the player is dealt exactly one additional card (d10) before they pass. This card is played normally as if they “hit”, the resulting outcome behaving like normal. If they win, they win with their doubled stake—and likewise if they lose. A player may only double down immediately after the receipt of their initial two cards.
  • Split
    • Players may “split” their hand if they are dealt a pair. That is, if a player receives a pair of aces or a pair of threes or so on, they may separate each of the pairs into a new hand. Each hand is immediately dealt one additional card (d10) and each hand immediately is wagered with a stake equal to the initial bet. Players may then hit or stay on these hands as normal (d10), playing each hand one at a time. The exception is with splitting aces, where the player hits just once on each ace (similar to doubling down). The player may double down on one hand only. Each hand is played independently and may be won or lost accordingly.

STANDARD PAYOUTS
  • Higher Sum
    • Pays 1:1 — a wager of 500 returns 500 from the dealer.
  • Twenty-one
    • Pays 3:2 — a wager of 500 returns 750 from the dealer.
  • Two-card Twenty-one
    • Pays 2:1 — a wager of 500 returns 1000 from the dealer.
  • Seven-card Charlie
    • Pays 5:1 — a wager of 500 returns 2500 from the dealer.
  • Double Down
    • A wager of 500 becomes a wager of 1000.
  • Split
    • A wager of 500 becomes two separate wagers of 500.

The deal with this is that I love Blackjack—as a card game found in every casino, it has relatively favorable odds—among friends it can be an enjoyable casual experience. I value Blackjack in the roleplay setting because it is relatively easy to run using just a d10 roll command, much more so than Poker, or even Baccarat. As a result, (and because I have a ramblin' gamblin' character) I have found myself explaining a version of the above rules more than once.

Well, now the rules are there for easy reference. Lengthy explanations in the middle of a RP session no more!

Comments and feedback are of course, always welcome.

Nice. Also there is a casino in halbed that deals out cards for 21. Just throwing that out as 21 seems to be the theme.
