About You!

Runepriest

2. How old are you?
19

3. What country are you from?
USA

4. Have you read the King's Law, Code of Conducts, Official Lore, and the Player Guides yet?
Yes

5. In your own words, how would you define metagaming and powergaming?
Metagaming is generally the use of OOC information IC for IC benefit.

Powergaming is acting in a way towards other players in roleplay that is noninteractive for them. Powergaming is usually reference in regards to roleplay where there is a decisive winner, such as combat roleplay.

Doing a triple backflip over a character and then 360 stabbing them in the neck is noninteractive and does not allow for the other party to respond.

Nope

7. Name one of our current Mentors.
Ayda

8. Tell us about yourself!
I have been roleplaying on internet forums for roughly 7 years, though I have been doing live action style stuff for much longer. I am a full time college student currently who also spends a lot of my free time at my job where I work for a retail company. Most of the time I have leftover I spend either with my girlfriend or playing video games if I'm not working on school. Currently I am working towards a bachelors in Public Administration and live with my parents. I would say I am a fairly good writer and currently also work part time freelancing.

9. Do you have any examples of your work?
None that I am comfortable presenting as I do private comissions that can't be used without the buyers consent as per contractual agreement.

10. Did anyone refer you? If not, how did you find our server?
I have hopped around from server to server so I'm excited to see what goes on here, found it through the internet.

About Your Character!
This section is about the character you intend to use once you join the server. We ask that new players follow these guidelines during this portion of the application:
  • Characters begin with basic skills and gear. No advanced armor or weaponry. Skills and abilities are appropriate to a novice level. Skills should be learned through roleplay, not through backstory.
  • Characters fit the lore. If you choose to play as a Moor Elf, for example, we expect appearance and details to be fitting with base lore.
  • Characters cannot use magic in any way. The test itself should not mention magic either. HollowWorld uses a restricted magic system and it is only accessible to those who find and learn from a teacher in-game.
  • Tests should not be violent. No murder, killing, death, torture. In the past, 8 out of 10 applications featured characters fighting off bandits or slaying passersby. We don't want to see how well you can script a fight scene. We want to see how well you can tell a story, how well you can roleplay.
  • Be creative and be original. Do not use tests/characters whose home villages were burned, parents murdered, and then set off to be an orphan assassin. It has been done before. Please don't do it again.
  • Written portion of the test is required to be a 400 word minimum. If the test doesn't meet the minimum, Staff may ask you to extend the test before the application is considered.
You can remove the guidelines above when you're copy and pasting the application. The instructions above are for you to read and can be removed when applying.

Written Test!
(This is where you tell us a story of your choosing! Be creative. It should be 400 words minimum and use the character you've created above. This is what we use to judge your ability as a roleplayer. Show us how much you've learned by reading our guides and lore. Include anything you think will impress us!)

Current Setting of the Server:

For days, it rained. The coasts were battered by bolstered waves, and the fields turned to lakes that could swallow a caravan. For some, it was an omen.

The evil promises came true. As the storms slipped back out to sea and the sun's auburn hues could again be seen rising over the horizon, something dark crept out from the cavern depths. A dangerous, and mysterious plague gripped Altera by ferocious surprise. At first, it was studied in quite isolation by academics, but soon it became clear that this was no mere curse of nature. Plague beasts, monstrous mutated abominations, stormed research facilities, escalating the situation into a full scale struggle. Across the lands, people became displaced from their homes as monster and plague altered their way of life.

The lands of Altera are poised in dire straits, but there is hope. The sun still shines, and opportunities for glory grow like tentative vines. All over, people are fighting, innovating and living in spite of the darkness below. Will you join them?

Venkyl stood on the docks of the small port town, casting his shoulder over the sleepy town he had spent nearly all of his life in. Memories flitted back and forth throughout his head of the day to day ongoings of everything and how he knew the city like the back of his had. Venkyl had a story for never every corner of the city and two or three more for some of his more frequent haunts. The Moor elf was doing his best not to reminisce himself into staying as he set most of his remaining belongings into the small skiff that bobbed up and down in the murky water. The merry few who gathered at the docks to wait their turn pushed and shoved in an attempt to get every inch of themselves as forward as possible, but still remained conscious of the line and the punishment that came for those who dared to cut forward. The singular rowman aboard the boat extended a hand to Venkyl, reaching out and helping the Moor step over the short gap between the weathered end of the dock and the wall of the skiff. With a deep breath, he took the mans hand and stepped on board. The ferryman left on the docks cried out for the next in line to step forward, and a mother and her son battered by the terror of the previous days and the onslaught of unknown creatures stepped forward to fill the spot Venkyl had left behind. The line anchoring the ferry to the dock was lifted from the rotting support beam and tossed above as the rowman wedged his oar into the water, and pushed off. The trip itself would take several days, as the winter months always brought with them lower tides and the risk of freezing to death if the skiff picked up too much speed and tipped over. The channel itself was no so deep as it was wide, and this time of the year there were points in which the bottom of the boat would just barely clear some of the shallower locales. There was no swimming to safety this time of year, and the oar the rowman held was more commonly used as a brake to yield the speed of the boat over something to goad it on. The source waters of the channel itselfs were strong to begin with, but the remains of a shattered dam further upstream led the water at a dangerous pace no matter the temperature. Beyond that, though, was the fear of more creatures emerging from the depths of the water or the remains of some fallen villages or previous skiffs blocking the way down river. Both meant that whatever opportunity lied downstream was impossible to reach, as it was determined that nothing bar the channels remained to be safe for crossing.

Hello, your application is looking good. I've only one thing to ask you adjust, and another thing to note that you may want to adjust depending on preference:
  • Powergaming Definition: Please expand upon your definition further, and have another look at our {King's Law}.
  • Character Name: Moorish surnames work on a class-based system of prefixes. For aesthetic purposes you may wish to adjust the name unless you are alright with two apostrophes in the name. You can see the information on that lore at the {bottom of this post}.
Please reply to this thread when you'd like me to have another look. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact myself or another mentor. Thanks.

Looking sharp, welcome to Hollowworld.

Congratulations!

I'm pleased to announce your application has been approved. I hope you enjoy your stay in Altera. Before logging on make sure you read the Survival Guide. It will help you on your way to get established in our World. If you need to know any additional information, everything can be found in our King's Law. Make sure you consult either of these two before asking a question ingame.

If you're stuck unable to interact with anything or chat, try using /warp whitelist, if this doesn't work then please message a staff member with the problem.

+Please note we are in the midst of a server-wide campaign, and the world has been affected!+

The Forlorn campaign is currently ongoing, involving a widespread plague. As such, almost everyone is currently on the isle of Linlea, in Linistel, or at Storm's Landing, as volunteers, refugees, etc. I'd strongly recommend you take a brief look at the current campaign summary [here] so you aren't confused about the basics of it. If you wish to participate in this campaign, make sure to let staff know with this thread [here]. If you have any questions feel free to ask myself or another mentor, as it's a bit of a big thing to catch up on. More information may be found on the campaign right [here] in the general campaign section.

+You are probably eager to jump into the game, so there is no need to read all the links. Just use these as a reference for later.+
