Sunshine Heroes: A New Day

NinjoNick

Lord of Altera
Some twenty years ago, the world was populated by superheroes. Legends such as Vanisher, Crusade, and Blue Shadow were worldwide icons. You never went a day without hearing about how The Alliance saved the world from another giant robot, or how they saved a baby from the burning building. Crime was at an all time low, and the world seemed to be near perfect at the time.

Then all that changed. In the year 1973, The Alliance seemed to have just vanished out of thin air. A scarce few eyewitnesses claimed to have seen many of them fly towards their space station, the Beacon, but none were confirmed. The heroes became memories and drifted off into history, holidays were spent celebrating their existence at first, but as crime went up and safety levels went down, the people began to hate the superheroes for leaving them to a chaotic world. Thankfully by the year 1980, even the super villains vanished, ending an era of godlike beings.

The year is now 1994, the city of Sunshine City is among the biggest and most famous cities in the world. Located in southern California on the west coast, the city is famous for it's pristine beaches, beautiful people, and amazing history and culture. West Coast Hip-Hop and Grunge culture are at their height, musical legends such as 2Pac and Nirvana constantly visit the city to preform concerts and to promote their albums. Industrial businesses such as Hogge Corporation create and invest in technology ranging from cell phones to military weaponry and hardware.

On Pig Island, Hogge Tower stands as the tallest building in the world. At an awe-inspiring 3,000 feet, the pig head logo shines brightly in the nighttime. Mr. Hogge, CEO of Hogge Corporation is known for his philanthropy, investing millions of dollars into research on discovering what had truly happened to the heroes of old.

Over the past year, new super villains have begun to appear in the city, strangely nowhere else. Workers of evil such as Crescendo, a eastern European musician that wields weaponized musical instruments, Melter, a man made of fire and lava that is able to melt anything with a single touch and create fireballs at command. Weirdos like Toadstool, a scientist that mixed his own DNA with that of fungi, able to control mushrooms and other types of fungus and Biohazard, a weak bodied man that can infect people to do as he pleases with a virus. These villains have caused massive strife and chaos within the great city, but there has been no hero to stand up to these evildoers. No man or woman has dared to challenge the evil that has been tearing apart Sunshine City.

Five people woke up on an early July morning, each having no idea what was about to happen to them, or what their destiny would be.

To be Continued...

(Thank you so much for making it this far. This is going to be the opening to a series of stories I'm writing on a fictional universe I created with a friend of mine for an original role-play campaign. I'll try and make a new story every week, maybe every couple of days, we'll see where this goes. Please note that whatever factual errors are intentional. People like Kurt Cobain are still alive and well in this universe, and the president is not Bill Clinton.)

Chapter 1: Changes

Wade woke up to the sound of the Beach Boys playing on the alarm clock set to 7 o'clock. He reached around blindly for his alarm clock, slamming his fist onto the snooze button, knocking it off of the bedside table. Groaning as he got up, he looked over at his roommate, Ronald, across the room scrunched up in a ball as he groaned with annoyance.

“Tell me it isn’t time to go to work already...” Ronald looked back as he spoke, his eyes searching for Wade with hazy eyes.

Wade laughed and stood up, stretching his body as he rotated his hips in a circular motion. “You’d better believe it buddy. Look on the bright side, you’ll get a promotion any time soon you know.”

Ronald got out of his bed after Wade went to the bathroom to clean himself up for the day. He was a rather short man, just over five feet tall. His broad and thick body coated in muscle. He appeared to be of Native American descent and was actually from Washington. His two most distinctive body traits happened to be his abnormally large feet and exceptionally hairy chest and arms. Ronald never smiled, his face always in a sort of a grimace.

Wade finally stepped out of the bathroom after his morning shower with a towel wrapped around his waist. He smiled at his roommate and nodded his head to the bathroom.

“Get in Furball.” Wade grinned as he patted his friend on the shoulder, Ronald moving toward the bathroom and closing the door, grunting absentmindedly.

Wade was almost the opposite of Ronald. He was lean and tall, standing at over six feet and has a swimmers build. He was half-Hawaiian, his father a famous Hawaiian surfer, his mother an immigrant from Poland. Wade had a certain happy aura about him, his face was almost in a constant smirk, his confidence and ego where nearly overwhelming.

Wade happened to be a surfer like his father. Sunshine City happening to be one of the central hubs for surfers and beach goers, he had made a living off of winning competitions at the beach and being a teacher at the surfing school. He had served in the military same as Ronald, but in a separate branch. Ronald finished up his shower, stepping out of the shower and beginning to get dressed in his blue jeans and safety jacket. He worked as a construction worker for in the real estate branch of Hogge Corporation.

Wade put his wetsuit inside his bag and wrote a quick note on the To-Do List that rested on the tiny kitchen table. Jotting down the words “Ronald, please get some milk at the store. I’ll let you watch wrestling tonight, I swear.”

Wade grinned, there was nothing Ronald hated more than professional wrestling, but it was a running joke between them, that only Wade laughed at. He grabbed his bag and his surfboard, heading out the door in a rush. He paused for a moment after realizing that he forgot his Walkman, sprinting back in and grabbing it, he went on down the stairwell to outside the apartment building he and Ronald lived at.

Sliding on his headphones, Wade pressed play, grinning as 2Pac’s “California Love” played. He placed his surfboard in his custom-made board carrier on his bike and got on his motorcycle and revved up the engine, driving off through the streets. He popped a wheelie as he went down Pacific Street. Grinning as he turned across a corner, he looked around briefly before revving up his bike, aiming for an alleyway, smirking as he blasted through the narrow path, he exits on the other side in a parking lot, braking as he drifted again, making it almost completely in his preferred parking spot.

After paying for parking, he got out onto the beach with his board resting on his shoulder. He trotted out and slid into the water, paddling out as the morning sun continued to rise up in the sky. Seeing that the waves were becoming bigger and better, he got out and began to surf, laughing as he squinted his eyes, spying some early bikini clad young women out on the beach. Wade lowered himself on the board, relaxing his body as he suddenly wiped out.

He flew high up into the air, seeing his board go flying towards shore as he began to fall back towards the ocean beneath him. He flailed his arms and cried out in shock as he hit the water, vanishing below the waves.

The waters off of Southern California were known to be cold, and his body reacted to his by tensing up as he swam around frantically to find out which way was up. Wade finally saw the sunlight above him and he began to make his way back up to the surface. Suddenly, he felt something brush against his leg that felt a bit like sandpaper. He realized that it had to have been a shark and looked around terrified for the shark.

As he looked under him, he saw a great white shark at least 15 feet long underneath him, swimming around in a circle. Wade’s eyes widened in the salty water as he began to slowly swim away, still under the water. He looked below him and saw a faint green glow in the water deep below.

Suddenly, the shark returned, hitting him in the back of the spine as he let out the rest of the water in his lungs from the blow, being forced downwards into the depths. He turned around and pushed himself away from the shark with his hands and feet, trying to get out of it’s path. The shark furiously shook its head and continued its downward path as Wade began to truly believe he was about to die. He looked back and saw that the green glow seemed to be coming from a metallic disk shaped object with rotating lights. He suddenly realized that he was seeing either a stupid prank or something actually legitimate.

The shark slammed him against the metal and swam a few feet to the side as it shook its head, as if the metal thing was bothering it. Wade quickly swam down under the thing and looked upwards, he strangely didn’t feel the desire to breathe, his body felt more powerful and sturdier than before. He saw a hatch and started to slide it open, grunting from the effort, he finally managed to force it open, revealing blackness ahead.

Wade being the cocky young man that he was, decided to amuse himself by entering the metal unidentified submerged object. Swimming inside the metal ship, he looked around and noticed that bright lights began to activate around him, showing a highly technologically advanced room. He noticed a generator pulsing out purple energy. Realizing he should probably leave, he began to swim back only to see a large wolf eel staring directly at him as he turned around. He stopped dead in his tracks and looked at the 7 foot long monstrosity. It looked like it was mutated somehow, large spiked growing out of its body as limb like fins were just noticeable.

The eel suddenly charged, snapping at Wade as he swam backwards, swatting at the snake-like fish as his back hit something hard and hot behind him, the wolf eel charged forward and it’s head just missed his own by inches, catching what appeared to be wiring of some sort on the generator. Wade suddenly realized that it was far too late to move away as he braced for impact. The generator lashed out with electrical energy, sending purple shockwaves outwards as they hit Wade and the eel, blasting them back to the other side of the room. Wade saw the open hatch and swam towards it as fast as he could as a purple electric strike came towards him and blasted him full on with it’s power. He could feel it sending shockwaves through his skin as his body convulsed and turned, he screamed out in pain as he slowly crawled to the hatch, wincing in pain as he made it out, another bolt and shock wave hit him and he went flying into the dark depths of the ocean. His vision went fuzzy and everything turned to black.
