The Hospitaller Order

[| The Hospitaller Order |]

Once, long ago, there existed an order. A legion of men, of women, of warriors and scholars devoted to a single cause: the safety and very existence of the world upon which they lived, their families lived. Defunct and forgotten to time for decades, Sir Archaeus Fronte has breathed life into this age old guard of the realm.

[| Edicts |]
For those who stand alongside the Protectors of the Order, there exists a code. Worn down and corrupted by the ages, Fronte has polished and reformed the very basis of the code - a process one thought to be disgraceful and forbidden, though it was clearly necessary.

=| 1. 'Harm naught the innocent of the land; stay thy blades for strike against the dangerous.'

=| 2. 'Demand naught respect, obedience, or fear; loyalty and trust is the foundation for effectiveness.'

=| 3. 'Seek always a way to help the struggling, protect the helpless; defend the innocent, and guide the lost.'

=| 4. 'Watch and be attentive for signs pointing to threat against Altera; for, we know naught what lurks within the infinite beyond, or what its intentions may be.'

=| 5. 'Study and learn of the heathens who give power to their unknown gods, for it takes only the tiniest hubris to set the wheels of chaos in motion.'

[| Additional Information |]

The colors that can clearly identify any that stand at with their blades to the darkness are a deep and full Green, and a vibrant Silver. This is in honor of the fallen house of Arduin, and an homage to the Legend of Leminth Talreyn. While these are the colors chosen, none are required to bear them.

In standing at the side of the Order, one is not expected to sign off unwavering obedience and respect to the more experienced members and leadership. Rather, the only thing expected of the protectors is loyalty - to the world, and to each other.

[| Knighthood / Scribehood / Palindry |]
There are two major areas of expertise within the Hospitaller Order; the Knights, and the Scribes.

Knights are responsible for all things combat, and Scribes are responsible for all things information. Both branches are responsible for having at least a minor understanding over the others' doings, as well as the ability to undertake field work. It's very cut and dry; but a subsect of the elite does exist, trained in both Scribehood and Knighthood - known as the Palindry.

Sentinels of the Order are considered the topmost authority of that branch, with the Lord Commander above the Order in entirety. These individuals are authorized to recruit and promote members in the Order, and provide oversight to the appropriate extent required for their division.

-A Closer Look at the Edicts-

=| 1. 'Harm naught the innocent of the land; stay thy blades for strike against the dangerous.'
A value held quite highly above the rest; as the proclaimed protectors of Altera, to harm its people in cold blood or beyond self defense - without validated reason to do so - is nigh-considered heresy in the Order. Murderers are criminals of one of the highest niche, and considered to be threats against Altera. Those who dabble in the realm of murder or harm without rectifiable reason are guilty of crimes against mankind. Contrary-wise, those who are guilty of crimes against mankind do not require given respect or consideration to their lives; although unless the particular criminal has been stripped of their mortal rights, murdering these individuals is still seen as being vile.

=| 2. 'Demand naught respect, obedience, or fear; loyalty and trust is the foundation for effectiveness.'

While it is fairly clear in its statement, Edict Two can be misinterpreted. To demand or expect or feel entitled to respect or obedience is frowned upon heavily, although to receive or give it is not touched upon at all, nor is it considered less than satisfactory by the Order. Respecting and following the command of the leadership is something that does come down to being required, even if a Hospitaller does not respect the leader themselves. Even so, all Hospitallers are freely permitted to question the authority of leadership or demand they reconsider an Order. However, the final say does come down to the leadership of the Hospitallers. This edict is more aimed towards those mortal beings whom would tread over people of Altera with tyranny, or instill fear in the hearts of folk with the intention of being obeyed. Something that can be likened to Rahas doctrine.

=| 3. 'Seek always a way to help the struggling, protect the helpless; defend the innocent, and guide the lost.'
Edict Three is very simple, and should be very simple to understand. At the very core of the Order are held the values of generosity and nobility. Should a beggar ask of coin, it is expected that at least some small amount is donated. Should a person beg protection from another's wrath or disturbance, it should be granted. Should a kingdom declare war upon another and it is deemed a threat to the security of the Alteran People, the declared upon kingdom should be supported - and knowledge and comfort should always be shared with those individuals who are ignorant in this world of what has bearing on their lives. Teach and correct heresy if one is capable of it, rather than outright avoiding or trampling it. Help somebody make it back to their home should they ask, or look lost. Helpfulness to the people the Order serves - Alterans - is demanded.

=| 4. 'Watch and be attentive for signs pointing to threat against Altera; for, we know naught what lurks within the infinite beyond, or what its intentions may be.'
It should always be expected that individuals of the Order keep an eye out for any threats that may begin to crop up and make themselves know; be them Mortal or Ethereal. To effectively combat that which threatens Altera, it must be known and studied.

=| 5. 'Study and learn of the heathens who give power to their unknown gods, for it takes only the tiniest hubris to set the wheels of chaos in motion.'
While this edict is as well straightforward, there are deeper meanings behind it. Heretical worshipers should be known, yes - although instead of outright punishment or demanding they suffer or be cleansed, it should be the task of the Hospitallers to provide better knowledge of the Pantheon - and try to convert heretics back to true faith peacefully. If a heretic cannot be converted, or poses a threat through breaking of the Divine Law, the responsibility of dealing with the heretic falls to the Inquisition - and should be reported to them through written letter in full detail, promptly.

I updated this, finally.

Going to ask @Baron and @Lannis if they would consider their characters to be a part of this, as they are currently working with Archaeus on things relating directly to the organization's interests and at the asking of Arch at his meeting.
