A bit of discussion in regards to languages?

Agree, or disagree?

I of the mind that actual foreign languages have more meaning than words between "<>" .

For that reason, what does Hollowworld think of having actual IRL languages represent IC ones? No need to actually learn the IRL language, but perhaps just a few phrases? Personally, I like the idea, because I would love to actually use the phrase 'coup de grace' but it's... French, not in Elves' Tongue. :S

I strongly agree, this should be a thing.

... Slight bump. :S

I really should of put this in general discussion. Roleplay discussion has less than half of general discussion's traffic~

Good! Keep up the discussion! People will think this thread is somewhat relevant~!

I think whatever Elves' Tongue is atm should be Latin or French.

I picked 3 root languages..

Latin
French
German

The words you can take half of a phrase and mesh them together.

If you really wanted to get complicated, Elves could speak a much higher root of common.. If that makes sense

You know, there is actually elven, dwarven, orc, and other languages. IIRC, Tolkien actually took the time to write out full languages for all of his major races. I think it would be absolutely awesome to have players learn these languages, or at least a few phrases as you suggested.

Agreed^. Cherry has linked me to a load of Elven websites all with phrases, words, grammar information, etc etc.

French is more like this:

Bonjour, permettez-moi de me présenter. Je suis Magnus Arcturus, seigneur de la ville sainte d'Harlaus et pour le moment héritier de la maison Arcturus.

Myself and Cubey both used rather a lot of Welsh when we were demons, mainly because the demons were 50% Welsh. I don't think I followed it up before Isaac died, but I'd be more than happy to.

Bearing in mind that Queen Grief was the only Immortal that watched over Earth, I don't think that many of Earth's languages had much to do with Altera. The only exception to this, in my view, are Demons, because Queen Grief created them. As she'd spent so much time on Earth, she'd (possibly) create demons with a little insight of Earth itself, perhaps using some of its qualities. One of these could be its language; Welsh.

*laugh* Grief uses common language (english), her nationally is unknown

Sometimes she uses "naught" instead of "nothing"

Tavish uses Ie, Na, Okee, Naught. Not much :s

I don't really want to modify Mok'yra to be the basis of a IRL lanaguage, to much chance for metagaming

If the need is needed I will probably base Mok'yra off Afrikaans
