@Somnastra

If you watch Shirobako its a P.A Works anime >>. - so prep for drama ; P.A works animes are usually on the safe side for everyone to watch though and more serious. Slice of Life style.

Curiously due to this anime people translated a chart some people made how much the characters approximately earn - turns out a normal college student as well as a part timer earn more money than an (normal/Key)animator (~ 9400USD/year). (Might include that the char is a rookie)
Thats, assuming a 40 hr week (which it definitely isn't in japan) 789 USD for a full time job...

Thats apparently the real low earners in the industry though, from what people wrote on the forum I found the chart.

I guess I'll jump in here... It's too hard to resit. I've been called "The Most Macabre Anime Viewer In Existence" by several my IRL friends. They come to be when they want something slightly darker. Though... I do have a handful of not totally depressing. So here's my list to add to the discussion. (I admit I haven't read all 52 pages of this thread yet, so if these have already been covered... Don't mind me then. Hehe.)

In No Particular Order...
  1. Higurashi When They Cry (Not for the faint hearted....)
  2. Attack on Titan (The anime that took the world by storm, yada yada)
  3. Psycho Pass (I love dystopian societies. I love debates on whether it's dystopian or utopian more though.)
  4. Madoka Magicka (I was forced to watch this at first. I swore it off because it looked so girly. And then it wasn't..... o_0 )
  5. Hellsing OVA (An oldie but a goodie)
  6. Fate/Zero (Lots of monologues, but good characters.)
  7. Legend of the Legendary Heroes (Though that ending.... Leaves a lot to be desired. Had to go dig up the manga to put it all together)
  8. My Bride Is A Mermaid (Hehe... Hehe.)
  9. Heaven's Lost Property ( See the above comment.)
  10. Tokyo Ghoul (Okay. I have to be honest. I haven't finished this one yet. But I'm marathoning it right now. Sosogood)
  11. Tenchi Muyo! (This was my childhood. Every day after school, I'd watch it on Toonami. My first introduction to anime. This and Dragonball Z.)
  12. Kill la Kill (I was really put off by the absurdist comedy until that absurdist comedy had a precise reason and purpose. And then I was doing a slow clap.)
  13. Death Note (Need I explain?)
  14. Full Metal Alchemist (I've been meaning to watch Brotherhood though. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.)
  15. Knights of Sidonia (I only liked this one after some time had pass and I was able to reflect on it)
  16. The Devil is a Part Timer (Just a fun time sink. Who doesn't want to watch Satan work at McDonald's?)
  17. Blue Exorcist (Though I feel like there was so much potential here and it was just.... lost.)

Okay, this list wasn't too terribly gory or macabre. Though there are some....

You look like you need some Neon Genesis: Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop.

And Grave of the Fireflies.

Add Gurren Lagann, just the first three episodes and see if you enjoy it

I've actually watched the first episode. On the fence about it, but likely something I'll look into after I finished Tokyo Ghoul and Angel Beats.

You look like you need some Neon Genesis: Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop.
You're the second person to tell me to watch Evangelion in the last two days. I'll add that to my list.

Is anyone currently watching Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis? I think it'll be my favorite of the season. Good bunch of comedy and action.

So I found this thingy called "The “Hentai” Prince and the Stony Cat"

If you want to laugh your sides of, I recomend it. Only of course of you can handle the "you know what" theme :3

I swear down on me mum, I'll suggest only the best of the best.. and they are down here.

Something mysterious? DRRR!! / Durarara!!
Something with lots of action? Darker than Black
Something relaxing? Mushishi
Something that will make you actually laugh out loud? Gintama
Funny with action too? Beelzebub
Something overall good? Baccano!
Something in space!? Cowboy Bebop
Something post-apocalyptic? Trigun
Hungry for a shitload of episodes but still a good story? One Piece
Good story with a lot less episodes? Sakamichi no Apollon

If you haven't seen these, go watch them already. I'd also suggest Samurai Champloo, but luckily you've already seen it.. and if you don't mind mild gore, watch Tokyo Ghoul aswell.

Watched the first episode of Tokyo Ghoul, instantly put off. It seems so bland and edgy, but that's just me.

Also, here's one of my many Jojo gifs.

The first... 11 episodes can be a bit painful, due to how useless the protaganist is, but...

The 12th episode makes it worth waiting for the next season :D

I like it ^^

The whole bit where she shoves human into his mouth and forces him to eat was dumb to me, and honestly I don't think I can sit through 11 more episodes of the that tribble. The protag is also eerily like Eren Jaeger from SnK, not a good thing imo.
