I think that trying something new is positive even if we end up reverting back to the old system. It shows that things are happening behind the scenes and discussions are being had about trying to improve the functionality of the server.

I entirely agree that it shows there’s things being worked on and that’s good, and I’m not against trying new things but at the moment I just think the consequence is way too weak in the first place and doesn’t justify being able to escape it with animancy or other means. Specifically, being able to get out of the memory loss entirely when it’s already frankly way too easy to regain the lost memory anyway- Rolling every day against a DC of 10. And that’s not considering that they could choose an entirely meaningless memory as well. When you let people get out of it entirely with animancy it ends up just feeling like, “Okay, why have it at all then?”

I can't speak as to why Lilith avoided it, but it could have been a singular event due to her sparking or it could be a discipline-wide thing (there's only three active animacers anyways). As far as the memories go, I think it is in place for people to have some fun/interest in the process of the death. Sure, someone could just chose a simple memory that has no sustinence, but that is their choice and you have to understand that some people will just blow it off (even if you or I wouldn't.) People still lose their memory from before their death (I think like 24 hours or something like that?) and that cannot be recovered, so if they were murdered they're not going to know how/why/who killed them unless it was public, they had reason to believe it was someone, etc.

Obviously I do not know what happened with Lilith exactly so forgive me if this seems instinctive or misinformed, but my immediate reaction upon seeing this is what is the point of this new system if there’s even apparently ways for characters to avoid losing a memory at all? That’s like if a character was able to not have a death counted against them for future revival rolls under the old system, and seems to only further weaken the idea that death carries any weight anymore.
As mentioned to Jstar, I find the reviews and critique helpful. There are certain things set for Animancy characters in regard to revival considering they are a school of the soul. But as the temp system goes, I had to clarify with Lannis so that we still give some weight to the death in the same flow, but not take-away from already set lore for Animancy. We'll be adjusting for them on the rare occasions.

On an aside- We've had at least one death so far with a serious memory loss written and I think if the flow keeps going, there'll be less of a need to moderate it if players continue that way.

Animancers not losing the memories before/of death* was a feature from a while ago that didn't get fully transitioned to this system as it happened infrequently enough to escape consideration. The tradeoff is that while they do not lose the memories, they also do not get to forget about the trauma of literally dying, and get to have a fun time coming to terms with that afterwards.

*within reason, it's never been relevant but compromising details about their own death would be obfuscated. Expectations of "don't solve your own murder" still apply, but otherwise it's a nice way to torment apprentices.

Imagine waking up and remembering the most unimaginable pain of your body literally shutting down, and having to live with what it felt like if you were torn apart by a wendigo. Pretty gnarly stuff and makes for horrific PTSD moments of having to live with knowing what it feels like to die. It's not a blessing that animancers remember.

I wasn’t aware of this tradeoff. As far as I knew it was just something that Evelyn had done or the like that prevented the one memory loss. I certainly agree that that’s a significant tradeoff- remembering your own death would be... affecting to say the least LOL

Edit:

I do hope this is the case. I’d still stand by that as it currently stands it’s too easy to recall the lost memory but in general as long as people do have it genuinely affect their characters somehow I wouldn’t complain.
