Ruminations

by Uriel Valhart
-=============-
Introduction -
I have once before attempted to compile my thoughts and beliefs upon the page, but the manuscripts on which I wrote are long lost and I have since thought it necessary to begin again. My name is Uriel Valhart and I am one of Valiant's Sons of Battle. I am called to write these words by the knowledge that my life is, in fact, temporary and that there will be a day that I will no longer be able to serve my Father and share his will as I have done all of my life and so, herein you will find my thoughts, my life and hopefully my teachings in regards to life and the service of the God that I have so devoted my life to. To begin with, I shall detail the formation of Valiant, his Court of Conflict and his Holy Plane of Arbalor. I shall then go on to share with you the words that my Father has shared with me and offer my meditations of their meanings and applications in our lives. Finally, I shall detail my life's service to Valiant and offer advice in ways that I believe we can all honour our father.

Instruction -
Our Father has his tenets, his commandments, here they shall be written at the head of this memoir lest we ever forget.
I. Hold true to thy given word.
II. Fester not thy body to disrepair.
III. Do not abandon diplomacy out of lust for war.
IV. Defend those that cannot defend themselves.
V. Do not betray thy companions, people, or traditions.
VI. Tremble not upon the field of battle, but always remember the better part of valor.

Formation -
Valiant is known far and wide as the God of War, the God of Honour and Justice. He is known to be one of the 'youngest' of the Alteran Gods but his ascension into the role of God of War is vastly disputed. The truth, as I have come to discover it, is thus; Valiant is not the amalgamation of the Gods of War that came before Him, but is rather their liege lord and they are his mesne. Those Gods of yore; Valor, Kilrox, Skeira, Crusade and Rahas are the prime members of his Court of Conflict, his archangels and generals of the Legio Lares and Legio Angeli. Though each once held the spark of Divinity, all are now subservient to Valiant as their lawful liege Lord and master of War, for this is the way of things. A God of War cannot be bested in war, for the very possibility implies they are no longer the Master, the Lord of Warfare- thus, those that have fallen have done so as it was their destiny to serve in the next's Court of Conflict.
The story of Valiant's ascension begins with disparity between Order and Chaos, Light and Dark, Harateth and Jishrim. With such opposing cosmic forces, conflict was inevitable. The two Gods, so sure of their own righteousness, each wrought a general, a God in their own right, to wage a war for their respective father's. From Harateth, we were given Valor or Korigon; who stood for Honour and Glory, and from Jishrim, we were given Kilrox; who stood for Bloodlust and Carnage. Immediately, the world was beset by violent warfare and mortals suffered in the thousandfold as they rose up in the banners of the Gods. Unable to stand idly by as the forces of greater Good and darkest Evil battled and risked the perfect balance of the realms, Korog brought forth his own God, a daughter of sorts, Skeira who cared not for a cause, but fought war but saw it for the truth, its necessity as a means to an end. She brought about an end in the endless bloodshed of Valor and Kilrox, for neither wished to be in a weakened and vulnerable state for Skeira to defeat them. Thus, the war became cold. For millenia, this uneasy stalemate stood strong, until the age of Corruption in which Kilrox himself was betrayed by his father and, sensing a final end to a war that had raged since the dawn of time, was set upon by Valor. His sword was met by Skeira's blade who, in turn, was attacked by the weakened Kilrox. The battle lasted centuries, it lasted moments, it was over before it even began. With their victories and with their losses, the balance had to be restored and thus, there stood a singular God, freshly ascended. Crusade, once the Angel of Undending Endeavour, was imbued with the divinity of all three Gods and bested them all. He forced them to bend their knee before his might and forged the first Court of Conflict. The story then does not continue until millenia again have past and new worlds have been walked upon. For, with the coming of Aldred, in the years after the unease and the retreat of the Gods, the balance was once again threatened. Weakened in battle with the Scion of Visage and betrayed by a paladin of the Pantheon, Rahas lay defeated. He offered his sword to a brother, the very God of War; Crusade, and with it he demanded a promise. Allow him into the Court of Conflict, that he may continue serving the people and in return he would pledge loyalty forevermore. Crusade took up the blade of Rahas and with it accepted this covenant. He slew Aldred and was now the God of War but was served by Honour and Justice. No longer could Crusade serve his purpose and follow conflict wherever it was wrought, for he was now bound by the rules of Law and Justice. The universe fought and struggled against this divergence, until Valiant stepped forth and challenged Crusade to single combat. A new angel, unheard of, bested the God of War and took his rightful place at the head of the Court of Conflict.
Upon his ascension and assumption of the title of War God, the celestial realm wrought a new home for the new God. This place is named Arbalor and it is a vast plane that floats amid a reddened sky rife with lightning's flashes and thunder's crashes. It is a land of perpetual warfare, fortifications and steadfast honour. At the heart of Arbalor, stands the greatest fortress citadel ever conceived. Impenetrable in every way, the mighty stone halls of Valiant are where the Court of Conflict and the mighty Legio Angeli can be found, when they are not called on campaign with our Father. (If you've actually read this far, holy fuck, thank you so much.) The very hall of our Father is an immense place, empty of furniture save for a singular round table around which the Court stand in times of need. The walls of the Great Hall are lined with shields that bear the arms of every Knight, Soldier and Mercenary to have ever fought in war or give their life in conflict, their deaths and deeds to be forever recorded in the halls of our Father. One day, your own sigils and coats of arms may find themselves appearing in our Father's hall, if they are not there already, and our Father will know them and your deeds by name.

I have noticed that in describing our Father's Holy realm I have referred to the Legions of Arbalor by name, but have not elaborated on their identity or purpose, and so I shall do exactly that. The Celestial armies of Valiant are vast and immeasurable, but it is known that they are separated into distinct legions, for there are the Legio Lares of Kilrox and Crusade: those who die in war or the service of Valiant and are conscripted to serve in the endless battles against the void, and the Legio Angeli: the angels and divine beings of Valiant's court that travel with him on campaign and are immortal in their very nature. I have met members of both mentioned legions; thrice I have called on the aid of the Legio Lares to assist me in my efforts against the encroaching evil, and of the Legio Angeli I have met the Angel Strategy, who afforded unto me the title of Warlord for my efforts in the Mortal realm but these are matters that I shall elaborate upon in Dedications, for they matter not to the formation of Valiant.

Meditations
by Uriel Valhart
-=============-
In this age, where man and divine talk often and at length, I have been taught many things by the God of Justice, Valiant. I have lived a life with his ideals close to my heart and, despite my relative youth, I would like to think I have lived a life of good deeds and honourable intentions. However, I have not been without help and guidance. I, like many others in the world today, have found myself lost and without a clear path to walk upon. It is for those that feel this way, that I have decided to impart the same wisdoms that our Father has shared with me.
Naturally, at first glance, one might discard this missive as little more than religious tripe or propaganda and to those who do feel such, I beg that you bear with me. The words and lessons that follow are not exclusive to those of the Valiant faith, in fact, I believe they could offer help to all peoples of every denomination.

"Justice is the constant and perpetual will to render to each their due."
Each person in Altera has wants and needs, if one simply acts to their neighbour in a manner they would wish their neighbour to act with them, the world could find itself bettered and safer within days. It is necessary then, to recognise your needs and separate them from your wants. Your needs and the needs of your neighbour are equal and we should always seek to help one another reach their basic needs that they are due. This is to say, we should always help one another find accommodation, nutrition and water. Our wants are surely secondary and should never put another without access to their needs. One should chase their wants with care and be wary of greed, for overindulgence can lead to the wanton exploiting of another's needs for your own gain.

"If you cannot tell innocent from monster, then slay neither, and protect all so long as they are of the same spirit as you."
Why must we live such violent lives? If one is not sure of the crimes of another, by what right do they turn their blade on their fellow man? If not for the protection of oneself or another, one should seek to avoid killing and harming each other. Even in war, one should only strike if they are certain in their actions and resolve. To take another life can weigh heavily on the soul and should not be undertaken lightly. At the risk of preaching, we should consider those that we would seek to render lifeless, we should consider their families and friends and the suffering their death will bring. If, even after all this consideration, one decides that the life must end- ask a final question; "is there really nothing else I can do?".

"The world may be dark, but the light of you and yours shines within it, and I shall forgive your wavering faith."
There is darkness in the world, there are demons and dark gods that wish to do harm to the world. This is a fact that has been known and recognised since the dawn of the first exodus and shall be known until the end of time. What must be remembered, always, is that hope will always persist. So long as you wish to exact change for a better world, to work to be better and to right any wrongs; there will be light and hope to combat the bleak darkness that threatens us. Darkness and evil cannot prevail when there are those that refuse it. No matter the odds, even the smallest candle can fight its own battles against the deepest darkness.
Do not lose faith or lose hope in the world. There will always be good again, no matter the evils that plague today.

"I will be there for you."
Faithless, faithful or somewhere in between, Valiant fights alongside and to protect mortalkind. They will always help in the fight against the darkest evils, as they have done since the fall of the Kings. Valiant will, as the members of his Court of Conflict have done before him, fight on behalf of mortals in the planar. The wars and evils that threaten us are not fought alone. Man and Divine are intrinsically linked, their existences were crafted to benefit and protect each other. It is for this reason that Valiant and his Court of Conflict will always be there for us, they may take on other names or forms- but they will always remain. They will be there for us and will take to the fight against Altera's foes. It is an awesome symbiosis that can strengthen the weakest man and unseat the sturdiest emperor.

"You are right to fear wrath, my son. The path to injustice begins at righteous belief in one's own anger. Yet your resolve mustn't falter."
Anger is corrosive and it burns through us all, it can explode in such vile loss of control that we should always be wary of. In fact, it is wise to seek a peace and calm foundation to build our actions upon as to act upon anger is to give in to a fleeting moment of primal emotion. It is not always possible for us to take time away to consider or calm ourselves before making a decision or response to a trigger- however we should begin to ask ourselves this question before we act "why do I want to do this?"

"Self doubt and fear are the enemy of courage and must be overcome as any other foe."
It is okay to admit that you do not have all of the answers but it is not okay to use this admission to excuse inaction. Questioning one's decisions or waiting for another to make the call, for fear of making the wrong choice is a cycle that eats away at one's integrity. It is better to try and fail than to not act at all.

"There are none to prove your own worth to but yourself."
Your life is yours. It is a simple statement that we must all come to accept. At a glance, it seems obvious as who else could our lives belong to? Yet, despite this we blame our actions on others and build an image based upon what we believe they wish to see of us. Valiant offers us a way of life that is good for ourselves and for each other, but he does not own our lives. We act as we do with free will and accept any consequence that comes from our actions, be they good or bad.

Dedications
by Uriel Valhart
-=============-
this bit is the WIP. feel free to post : )
[Youth | Starfall | Unhinged | Kilrox/Schism | Aegis | Augury/Warlord | Family]

Here I have decided to write a memoir of a life lived in faith, a life dedicated to my Father, so that all may see what we may achieve if we set our minds to it. I have lived a life of duty and I whilst I have likely made many mistakes, I have owned my actions and will never shy away from the deeds that I have done. Should the day come that I am invited into the Legio Lares, I hope this memoir may offer a faithful account of my worth to Crusade, that I may serve my father, even in death. I have pondered on where to begin and on what point is too early for my story, I am told there are gaps in my memory, but I shall write as best as I can.
I shall preface this beginning with the following; I have no idea to whom I was born. My parentage is a mystery to me, the earliest familial figure that I can recall is that of our heavenly Father, Valiant. That is all. By some trickery of the figment; Know, I have been plucked of every memory and feeling of familiarity of my natural family - however, as I am told, there are no surviving members of that family save for myself. I have been told by sources, reliable as I can find, that my Mother was a whore and that we were quite close. The very same source has told me that a lot of who I am, my morals and ideals are such thanks to her and that before the trickery of Know I loved her very much. It is an odd sensation, to know that there is someone so important to one's life but is entirely absent to one's mind. I have taken to deciding, on those times that I take to think of my origins and where I have come from, that I am mightily grateful to the woman that birthed me, but I cannot say definitively whether I truly loved her or not, but it is likely that I did. (God this is so edgy and there is so much to go haha)

This is a really cool way to show us Uriel’s interior. I’ve often pondered just what went on in his head and it gives me a clear understanding for Valiant as his divine. Good read, Brit, I liked it!
