"It is ridiculous to suppose that the great head of things, whatever it be, pays any regard to human affairs."

KEY INFORMATION:
Name: Basil Phoenix
Age: Basil lived most of his life in an age before most people's reckoning, returning only recently under ambiguous circumstances.
Gender: Male.
Race: Elf.
Social Status: Low.
Sexuality: Heterosexual.
Height: 6'6
Weight: Basil is unusually thin for his height, making him very wiry.
Homeland: A long-forgotten rural village many centuries and worlds ago.

PHYSIOLOGY:
Build: Basil is wiry, not an especially well-built man. Though far from "scrawny," he seems moderately athletic.
Hair: His hair is somewhat long.
Eyes: His eyes glow. They are a dominant red, though traces of orange and yellow are sometimes seem, as though glowing hot and then cooling within his iris. The glow is not noticeable but for at night, when they seem to smoulder like hot coals.
Skin: His skin is pale.
Identifying Marks: His eyes, red and glowing. The scar on his shoulder that runs from his left shoulder to just over his right nipple. His general demeanor and disposition. Up to about mid-forearm his forelimbs are permanently darkened, as if by ash.
Appearance: Basil is the sort to be quite hawkish, paying attention closely to what's going on around him, while generally presenting himself as uninterested and detached.
Clothing: He tends to dress in red and black, colors he is quite fond of.
Weaponry: He has in his lifetimes wielded several different kinds of weapons to some degree of proficiency or another. Right now, he favors his artifact blade.
Prized Possessions: He lost all things that were a source of pride to possess.
Hygiene: He is clean.
Voice: His voice is a resonant baritone.

NOTABLE POSSESSIONS:
-
Torchlight
Description: A quarterstaff that seems to be made of a dark metal with sections of red crystal through the upper half almost resembling ice. It is as light as wood.
Effect: It has the physical properties of steel and is therefore hard to destroy, but if it is, it burns into ashes and reforms within an hour in the hand of its owner. Up to three times a day it can steal flame to keep lingering upon the top, which can then be thrown or kept as its own torchlight. Fire can be stolen from any source, but it will never exceed the amount beyond a torch worth. This extinguishes existing torches or candles but only briefly dims fireplaces and bonfires. Flame can be kept atop the stave for up to one hour before it extinguishes, and it is limited to a range of five blocks if thrown.
Tier: Legendary

Sanguine Estoc
Description: A red crystal estoc that seems to have almost small veins through its center. The hilt and crossguard are of a dark steel, but hold faint runic symbols all over the surface unknown to any mortal man.
Effect: This blade has all the properties of high quality steel, and can be treated as such, but should the blade ever be broken, it bleeds as if arteries have been severed. Should any Blessed individual touch the blade, they feel a stinging sensation as blood is drawn to the surface of their skin.

Sanguine Rapier
Description: A red crystal rapier that seems to have almost small veins through its center.

QUALITIES AND FLAWS:
Strengths: Basil is older than some suns. There is nothing new under the sun. From this deep well of prior experience and knowledge, even in this foreign and at time nonsensical land he has been revived into, he draws competence.
Fears: Basil has long had a pathological fear of death, thanatophobia.
Weaknesses: He is like any other man, but for the fact he gives into almost every impulse, and almost no inhibitions inform his actions or desires.
Intelligence: It is a pursuit of personal power that drives him. He does not engage in scholarly pursuits out of love for the craft or a fondness for books, he does not seek ancient arcane powers out of an archaeological curiosity. He is as intelligent as this intelligence has been convenient in his pursuit of power.
Languages: Common, Elven, and Verba, though he has all but forgotten that one.
Profession: Basil doesn't work. He cheats, he cons, he grifts, he accustoms himself to foul water and going sometimes days without eating. When he is in wealth, it disappears something just within hours. When he is poor, he finds a way.

ETHICS AND MOTIVATIONS:
Personality: Basil is someone who lives an unarticulated existence. Who he is at his deepest core he has always rejected, ignoring every epiphany, and shirking every chance at redemption. For all his life he has turned away from what it means to be alive. He has instead taken every impulsive pleasure he could find, and abused his natural talents to the point of exhaustion. Once this was his undoing, and he existed like this for centuries, but... now he has a fresh slate to abuse.
Religion or Cults: He was once a priest of Sallana. It's been a few centuries since his ordaining and his faith has fluctuated since then, but he's never been a stranger to excess.
Alignment: Chaotic evil.
Short Term Goals: Power over fire. Power unlimited. Something to get it from.
Long Term Goals: This is a concept antithetical to the fundamental nature of his being.

The world was in all ways unfamiliar. Not in the usual sense, the sense he had been used to, where he would establish himself and then find something even stranger than the mundanity he had become accustomed to of wizard and warlocks. No: unfamiliar in the way that wherever he looked, there was nothing but normality. No mysteries to explore, no creatures any stranger than he had become accustomed to, no dangerous magic thrown about wantonly.
Everyone spoke on matters which were the utmost uninteresting. Some sort of threat in the farthest westernmost reaches, the taste of their poor quality ale which had not even been brewed by dwarves, and their relationships budding or failing in either measure. Yet when he spoke… silent rooms, open and staring eyes, the wonderment of a child being told of the impossible. It was all surreal.
Worse, he was alone in this. None of his kind here with him. No one he could relate to in this regard. He did not even know the extent of his ignorance here, the extent of time which had passed since he understood the world. Knowledge he felt utterly commonplace, now irrelevant and shocking to the people around himself.
Basil had never been an especially well-educated man. He knew that: he could look at any of his peers, and realize he was the least amongst them, but his echelon was still so great that even being the least amongst equals the common man was but a toy and the other mages cautioned themselves in his vicinity so he would not prove a spanner in their works.
Now, though…
Basil’s magic failed him, but in the last years of his past life his magic had failed him anyway. It didn’t stop him from trying to find a faint kernel of the life he had lived, at his height. Of trying and trying and trying with the fire, trying to bend it to his will. Hours upon hours of nothing, only the memories of his past glories like ashes in the flames he tried to conjure.
Until the fire spoke to him, and he realized that the world was not so different from how it used to be after all. A pact made sense to him. A spirit living within his mind… a possession of his soul… yes, that all sounded very much like the life he used to live. A first step to reclaim the life he had lived.
It felt good to do it all over again.
