Active Borgrus Greatbane, Inept Dwarf

Seth_Jenkins

Lord of Altera
Borgrus Greatbane

Name: Borgrus Greatbane
Meaning of name: Greatbane is the name of his clan’s family, a small and unknown lot who prided themselves on their artisanship.
Full Titles: Pick of the King
Nickname/Alias: N/A

KEY INFORMATION:

Age: 25
Gender: Male
Race: Dwarf
Social Status: Working Class
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Marital Status: Single
Height: 5”0 ft
Weight: 78 kg
Date of Birth: 17th Truebirth PC 2268 - Year of Tribunal
Date of Death: N/A
Homeland: The Slums of Hearthsteed
Current Home: The Proud Dwarven Capital, Kharuz-Korum!

PHYSIOLOGY:

Build:
Borgrus stands roughly at around 5”0, with a thick and heavy set frame. He’d be considered quite ‘broad’ by others - interpret it as you will.

Hair:
A bright ginger mane that is haphazardly kept. Whilst most of it is combed back, there're rogue areas that protrude outwards in odd directions, along with obviously missing sections.
Across his jaw lies a short, ginger beard that is accentuated by two large, protruding braids that are bound with steel bands. They appear much more well kept than his hair.
His eyebrows are also ginger and rather bushy.

Eyes:
A deep blue in colour. They appear somewhat bloodshot and are round, hooded and sunken.

Skin:
His skin is pale and weathered; it is continuously covered in grime, whether that be coal dust, mud or anything in between.

Facial features:
His face itself is quite round and wide, with a squared jawline. His nose is quite squat and broad, with a downwards tilt being the only step between his nose and a pig’s snout. His mouth is thin and pursed. All this combines to give a rather grim appearance to the dwarf.

Identifying Marks:
His beard has two braids put into it that're threaded with metal bands.

Clothing:
He wears a simple grey tunic and leather trousers, along with a pair of leather boots. Over his trousers, he wears a work belt with a crimson cloak stowed between there, that wraps around his legs. He also has a shovel and pickaxe strapped to his back.

Weaponry:
None

Tools:
On his work belt, the dwarf has tools for a range of different crafts. All of the tools are very shoddy and below average, made by or retrieved by himself. He would have: A ball hammer and a flat hammer, a pair of tongs, a cold chisel and a hot chisel, a stone chisel, a set of compasses, a wood saw, a whetstone, a pouch of limestone.
On his back, he carries a large pick and a shovel.

Prized Possessions:
He finds his tools to be his most prized possessions, even if they’re all shoddy.

Hygiene:
His beard, hair and clothes remain immaculately clean, however the dwarf’s skin tends to be permanently covered in a layer of grime, usually being stone dust.

Voice:
His voice is low and deep, with a sonorous tone to it. His accent is somewhere between being a strong accent from the North West of England and a Scotsman, with a tickle of Irish at times. [Basically, the impossible rendered possible]

QUALITIES AND FLAWS:

Strengths:

- Literal strength
Since Borgrus was between crafts most of the time, his father put him to work in the mines. Due to this, Borgrus has developed strength relative to this. His strength is useful for lifting, carrying, swinging etc. and other general labour tasks.

- Resilient/Persistent
Whilst Borgrus is an inept individual, it doesn’t mean he’ll give up on what he’s doing (unless he’s forced to). Even in great adversity, Borgrus will continue trying and trying again.

- Trustworthy
Due to his fierce loyalty to the people around him, Borgrus is a very trustworthy individual. If something is a secret, it stays a secret. If somebody needs him there at 8am, he’ll be there at 8am.

- Self-reliant
After being entailed with abuse from his mentors and parents, Borgrus learned to be rather self-reliant. He will look to himself first before anyone else when trying to figure out a problem and takes care of himself with ease.

- Charismatic
Whilst the dwarf can be apprehensive of others at times, when he begins to talk he can be rather charismatic. His only redeeming feature when he makes a mess of things.

Fears:

- His Parents
A fearsome duo, they bullied and berated the Inept dwarf till he left his home, however his respect for them still stands. He fears he can never live up to their expectations and of the consequences of betraying their teachings.

- Losing the favour of Korog
As a Devout worshipper from birth, it is Borgrus’ belief that the Neutral God is watching at all times. To lose the favour of the God would be devastating, so Borgrus tries to stay on a path of neutrality and live under his virtues.

- Never achieving artisanship
Borgrus’s dream is to become an artisan and his fear of not achieving that is something that haunts him every day. He believes a dwarf without a craft is no dwarf at all.

- Other races
Borgrus’s knowledge of races comes from the stereotypes that his parents told him and his isolation only strengthened his lack of knowledge.

Weaknesses:

- Inept
He is completely incapable of achieving his goals - under mentorship as a child, he consistently failed at even the most basic of tasks related to dwarven crafts. The dwarf would need to work twice as hard to gain proficiencies in a complex craft.

- Unwavering loyalty
Even though an individual may be in the wrong, Borgrus will not separate himself from them. Once the dwarf has taken on someone as an ally, he is unwavering to them till his last breath. A character would have to take great actions to break this loyalty.

- Traditionalist
Borgrus’ parents were the classic dwarves - their beliefs were old-fashioned and he was reared on this and adopted a similar approach in life. Some of these beliefs include:
  • The inherent betterness of dwarves over other races
  • The need for a dwarf to become an artisan
  • Stereotyping of other races
  • A belief in a dwarven empire that is spanned with treasure
  • Belief of Korog to be the only God that dwarves should follow.
To name a few.

- Devout
Borgrus is a fanatic of Korog - his family raised him to pray daily and respect the patron God. He keeps a small altar to him in his home and follows the teachings of Korog to the letter. It sways his personal agenda and is a heavy influencer on him.

- Pride in self-reliance
Borgrus takes pride in his self-reliance and is therefore quick to dismiss the help of others in certain tasks. Even though doing a task alone could present a risk to him, Borgrus would much rather rely on himself than go and ask for help in tasks that he believes he can actually achieve.

- Fixation with multiple crafts
Rather than focus on one craft, Borgrus tries his hand at them all as to try to lower his ineptitude. His constant focus on multiple areas usually leaves him lacking in all areas and unable to truly master any (or gain at least an apprentice level of understanding).

- Shallow
Being raised for a simple dwarf life, Borgrus doesn’t see much past his own picture of becoming an artisan. In this, he can’t put himself into the bigger picture and usually focuses on the present more than the future.

- No combat experience
Whilst the dwarf may be large and tall (for a dwarf), he’s never had to be in a fight. Usually, he will leave the situation instead.

- Bad coordination
One of the issues that makes Borgrus so inept is his awful coordination - the dwarf is like an ogre spell caster with two heads.

BACKSTORY:

Borgrus was born and raised in a city slum in the Northern Kingdoms. Whilst his parents weren’t as poor as those around them, there was some disparity between races that led to the dwarves finding themselves better off in the poorer districts of the city. His life was truly uneventful; his parents kept him in usually and escorted him to the areas where he needed to be. Returning home or going out by himself was a privilege he was only granted as he got older.

The predominant task in his early life was being passed around the artisans of the city. As his parents had some money, they were able to talk him into the employment of the notable artisans around the city. This did not pay off. Borgrus was frequently kicked out, with his longest run being with a patient blacksmith who let him go after three months. This ineptitude was a disgrace to the family name and Borgrus was beaten and berated frequently.

At the age of 15, Borgrus was kicked out of his parents home as to fend for himself in the slums. This however was rather difficult and Borgrus ended up in a dilapidated shed his father built the next day. He was still continually tasked to begin apprenticing to worse artisans, but most his time was spent down the mines, where his parents found a use for him.

At 25, Borgrus left his home to find a place in the Eastern Kingdoms and make a name for himself.
