"To make the most quality silver, you have to mix it with nickel. The nickel lends its strength to the soft metal, without compromising its inherent beauty. You cannot filter the nickel from the silver after it has been forged as such. In the same manner, those of the same blood cannot be unbound from one another, and so must be treated as one another, punished and rewarded equally."

Introduction and History
ban3.png

Introduction
Fuvurians are the people who inhabit the lands of Sanardu, under the rule of House Fuvur. The name originated in the old lands of Riseport, where House Fuvur truly began to mould and develop a structure of its own and have more of a standing in the ever changing political world. Trade was the point of focus there, and so it is here, in this new city. Time has passed enough for the culture to develop again, adapted to the new landscape but holding onto the roots of it’s origin.

This thread will detail the culture of the ‘Fuvurian’, and should you be interested in making one for yourself, you need only PM Elz or Blarg with your desire for it and we’ll run it through with you.

====

Origins of the word ‘Fuvurian’
Fuvurian, a word derivative of the family name of House Fuvur, is a word that lost its original meaning quite some time ago. Now, the word Fuvurian has evolved to encompass things that are the product of, or related to, House Fuvur. Their people have taken the word Fuvurian as a means of describing themselves as a people.

To use Fuvurian as a moniker to describe oneself as a person, you are obviously saying you’re someone related to House Fuvur. To do so implies much more than that, however. To call yourself Fuvurian would mean that you are someone who has at least survived, if not thrived, under a regime incredibly dangerous to all but the most loyal citizens. If you’re an older member of the culture, you may have seen things that outsiders are simply no longer privy to: The caiman of Riseport, the kraken in our migration over the sea, the amazing tall and steep cliffs of Riseport, with its equally massive trees, and the short-lived defence of Riseport before abandoning it for what was almost our equivalent to Noah's’ ark, The Cradle. New members of the culture have faced, and will continue to face, their own struggles and wonders as well - the apparent power struggle against the land itself that we have only recently begun winning, the terrors from the skies we all know as Gryphons, and the fear for the well-being of our fledgling city.

History
Riseport. That is where things began, and it is important to know our roots if we are to implement it into our current living.

Physiology and Fashion
ban3.png

Physiology
Fuvurians are generally a cultural mixing pot, and always has been, but with the passing of time some traits have become more prevalent than others and are regarded now as Fuvurian traits in particular.

  • Hair, Eyes, and Skin
Fuvurian blood nobility has been notably black haired for a long time, though in recent years very light blonde has become just as revered. It is rare for nobility to have anything other than a deep, dark blue eye colour, but much akin to the addition of blonde hair, light brown eyes have occurred as well from time to time. It is only in the nobility that set traits have become so.

The common Fuvurian generally has any hair colour from black, to brown, to blonde, though anything else is hardly heard of. Not to say a red haired individual would not be accepted, but that it is simply not so much of an occurrence. The same can be said for eye colour, with no real one colour taking precedence over another in the lower classes. They remain in the range of blue, to green, to brown.

Women tend to keep their hair long, more when they’re older and married though the younger generations are not strictly against it as well. Intricate braiding is common, or pinning their hair up with an array of ornate clips and pins, though it’s more to keep them cool if they’re out in the blaring sun with hair down to their hips.

Men don’t generally allow their hair to go beyond the shoulder blades, for it is considered impractical and particularly feminine. It’s unheard of for men to adorn their own with anything other than the occasional leather band to tie it with. Facial hair is not unheard of in Fuvurian males either, though only once they’re of a significant age does it seem to be more full or acceptable in general.

Fuvurians, noble or otherwise, do however have a tendency to be tan, light or otherwise, but tan all the same. Children born pale are quick to tan in the sun the older they get. The city they may have originated from or the one they live in now have both been hot climates with lots of sunlight, and such is a trait simply commonplace now. Pale Fuvurians are rare and seen as an oddity.

  • Build and Race
The population of Fuvurians is mostly made up of Elves, though humans are also common. There is no real set ‘Elven’ type however, with most being some kind of mix of silver or forest, and even then not Elves with any specific pre-existing culture. The ruling family is almost entirely made up of Elven individuals, though through adoptions and the like there are some humans included.

The Fuvurian people are, generally, hard working and active sorts. Prone to either working the lands or the sea or traversing the terrain they live on, they are likely to be toned and athletic in build.

The average Fuvurian male tends to be around 5’10” to 6’0” and 160 to 180lbs, while the females remain a touch shorter at 5’7” to 5’9” and somewhere around 130 to 150lbs.

  • Lifespan
Fuvurian society has not yet been present for three hundred years, and so no average life expectancy can be put down. It could be assumed that nobility lives for longer, and as they are primarily Elven kind, you could use them as a basis for it.

ban3.png
Fashion
Fashion in Fuvurian society changes depending on the purpose of the attire. They generally have two kinds of outfit for when they are out in public, though being in the privacy of their home it is entirely up to the individual preference. Elegant, sometimes extravagant formal attire for events and festivals, and then every-day attire for work, which is far more made for practicality. Fabrics range from hemp for the poorer branch of Fuvurians, whilst silks and lace are valued by the upper classes. Linen and woolen garments are also desired, and leather is common for the working type.

It is of note that Fuvurians are not afraid of showing skin like some cultures. Loose, flowing gowns or more fitted and minimal - Clothing that reveals shoulders, arms and chest are not frowned upon in Sanardu, though if you turn up to work in it then you’re an idiot and you shall be told so.

Jewellery is a sign of wealth, though more in women than men. Head pieces adorned with gems, circlets, even belts can be found to be tailored to a more fashionable degree. It is common for a family heirloom to be something like a ring.

Female:
Formal clothing usually consists of dresses or long blouses made of colourful or white fabrics. Dark colours are not frowned upon, but they are more suited to their male counterparts. The fabric used is often of a thinner sort, such as cotton or linen, though the richer families tend to bring in the additional use of silk and chiffon. Lace also makes an appearance on the more expensive garments. Adorned with jewellery and gems, including headdresses, and the application of makeup if families can afford it to accentuate the eyes or lips. Shoes are either sandals, slippers, or some kind of heeled shoe. Boots aren’t common with formal gowns.

-insert art here of examples : ) -
Everyday clothing depends on the job they may have, leather is common with men and women both if it is a job with more risk, and cotton, wool or even hemp is standard. Blouses with trousers and tall boots of leather are simple but do the job. Jackets are worn but the weather usually does not call for it. Corsets are found on occasion if only to keep the blouses they wear fitted to their form or simply for comfort. They are not the fully boned ones used for posture in the North.

Hair is tied back, and jewellery is left at home unless it is something like a wedding ring. Bags and belts and pouches accompany the outfit. Less active sorts see women with blouses and skirts if they so desire, and aprons if the job calls for it. Practical, yes, though occasionally someone may get some kind of embroidery or gold buttons. Shoes are generally boots with little exception.

-insert art here of examples : ) -

= = =
Male:
Formal clothing in men sees them wearing waistcoats, silk shirts, and tall boots. Prone to wearing darker colours like blacks, greys and dark blues, it is again not unheard of for them to wear lighter varieties or more colourful ones. Vests and waistcoats are often embroidered and of high quality, with fancy trim and buttons. Shirts and tunics may be of any fabric, depending on the preference, though silk is expensive and not seen in poorer families.
The boots are not to be the same ones they may work in, made of a much softer leather and kept clean. Hair can be loose or tied back, and jewellery is not common with men aside from simple necklaces or rings.

-insert art here of examples : ) -
Everyday clothing with the male Fuvurians is not so different to that of the women, shirts or tunics with trousers and boots. Leather is dominant, trousers included, but the shirts are woolen or hemp based. Jackets are less common with men than the women, though they do have sashes and things that women don’t often go for. Gloves, depending on the job at hand, are preferable with men, and shirts rolled to the elbows.

Language
The ruling class of House Fuvur is made up almost entirely of elves, and as such elven lore is often what has the largest impact on those living under the Fuvurian regime. Developing from the times of Riseport, an extended period of time has made the Fuvurian elvish distinct from the much more common Alteran variant.

While there are examples of new words entirely, the pronunciation of the language, and how things are spelled, the “new” language is overall just a particularly strong accent of the native tongue. It is still developing, not yet able to be considered a language in itself, merely a dialect.

Several words used in everyday life are unique to the Fuvurian tongue, such as;

(We're deciding on these atm, I have a lexicon somewhere but this is a WIP for now, sorry!)
WORD - 'Mother'
WORD - 'Father'
WORD - 'Thankyou'
WORD - 'Farewell'
WORD - 'Greetings'

As well as some titles:
Draiodoir - ‘Witch King’
WORD -

Names:
It is commonplace for children to be named in honor of their ancestors, believing that in this way their young will be inspired to ascend to the same heights that those before them had.

Their names are an amalgamation of common human and elven names, but those particular to the Fuvurian culture that are not commonplace elsewhere include names that are corrupted variants of Elven words, warped by the dialect they speak. Some examples would be:

Male - Caolan, Iomhar, Kyran, Firdal,

Female - Sylath, Aine , Muirin, Liadan,

Additionally, bastard children have been known to be named 'Nathair' - Which is Fuvurian for 'Serpent'.

85457

Lifestyle
In a true battle of contradiction, Fuvurians are generally communally minded, but also generally individualistic. This is because there is the concept of a public life, and a private life. A Fuvurian who is at work will often be completely different to a Fuvurian at home.

Public life is generally consisting of whatever their responsibilities to the community are, while how they hold themselves is quite often however they personally believe they should conduct themselves, according to what is common in their community (traders might be overtly friendly, poets probably run the gamut, people who clean up poop with shovels are probably pretty stoical).

Private life is their life spent without mind being paid to their responsibilities, meaning basically time spent during recreational pursuits. This is also generally a persona given to close friends; for a Fuvurian to open up to someone is an extremely personal choice, often one not made lightly. How they conduct themselves at this time is entirely up to the individual, but frequently it is time spent away from the community. Perhaps with foreigners, or in just a different quarter of the city. If a Fuvurian is pursuing a lover, this is typically the half with which they would do so, while the other half is how they will be introduced to the community.

This dual nature of the common Fuvurian’s personality is something that is one of the features commonly associated with those who have been raised or lived in the society for many years, and many of the more recent additions to the commune do not have this dichotomy.

85457

Working Life
Fuvurians are, for the most part, a hard working and aspiring peoples. With an emphasis on living on what the sea can provide and renewed agricultural pursuits, they are also a self sustaining sort, with trade being what adds variety and wealth to their lives. With time they have also grown to appreciate the arts, something stemmed from craftwork years before.

Men and women both tend to work, though it is partly out of preference. In many cases women remain home to run the family household and ensure things are in order, with as much responsibility as the designated male of the house.

There is an air of friendly competitiveness within Fuvurian society also, with families and individuals striving to be the best of the best in their chosen area of expertise. Well taught, experienced workers are highly praised and known for what they do, from artist to doctor to sailor.

Working at Sea:
Fuvurians have become well accustomed to tall mountains, and maritime pursuits. It could be said they live not on the land at all, but only venture there to resupply, for protection, and to conduct trade (hello greece).

While not all Fuvurians will have a love of the sea, the sea is a necessary part of their existence as a people. Living in lands basically impossible to reach by foot, horse, or carriage, the sea is what connects Fuvurians to the world outside of their homes at all. As a result, anyone who has served at the whims of the Fuvurs for any length of time will have at least a passing knowledge of the sea and how to sail. Those who don’t are typically looked upon as outliers and strange by those who are more in line with the Fuvurian orthodoxy.

85457

The Arts
In Fuvurian lands the artist or philosopher who can open one’s eyes is seen with more worth than the blacksmith who can make the best steel. In fact, very few Fuvurians even practice such, the majority of a Fuvurian’s material wealth is likely some manner of foreign product. However, to clarify, metallurgy and the ilk are still as valued here as anywhere else, merely not in the same way. All Fuvurian’s need nails, hammers, and tools at some point in their lives. They simply won’t be as celebrated as if they were using their steel to make a pretty sculpture, or as a part of an experimental design of some kind.

This same ideology applies to an array of crafts, from working with clay to wood to paints, there is an abundance of detail, colour, and craftsmanship in the lands Fuvurians inhabit. Marble fountains and statues, painted clay flooring, carved ornate overhangings and coloured glass are just some of the things that make up the city of Sanardu, the Fuvurian capital. Paintings and tapestries are valued in the household, as well as elegant incense holders and cutlery of fine silver.

Creating jewellery and working with precious gems is a revered talent, and in itself is considered an art form.

Music and dance are popular, but they have no real preference and such things are usually brought in for festivals and celebrations rather than Fuvurians themselves learning the art.

85457

Cuisine
Typical Fuvurian cuisine has changed in some ways from the times of its origin, but two main aspects remain very much the same: The Sea, and Fruits. Fuvurians enjoy a variety of seafood, enhanced by cooking it with select herbs and even occasionally parts of the lemons that grow in Sanardu. Clay brick ovens are typically used for such things, though broths and soups are made in large portions to serve the family and friends. Inviting friends for dinner is commonplace in Fuvurian society, a chance for them to socialise and relax in the comfort of home.

Spices are an imported exotic product that was once used extensively in Fuvurian families, but the price of importing such things has made it hard to access for those lower down the line. Slowly replacing the spices in many diets are the herbs now available in the lands of Sanardu itself however, used in a great many dishes to enhance flavour, such as Basil, Oregano, Rosemary, and Thyme.

Fruits are primarily citrus based, but this is very much how it was in times of old. Now, Fuvurians see jams and marmalades and enjoy it on pastries or thin pressed bread.

Customs and Ceremonies
ban3.png
Customs
Most Fuvurian customs are inherited from the culture they were apart of before they came to live in the Fuvurian culture. But one thing that is an artifact of the culture before the new world is the concept of a great hunt. Where a band of individuals will come together to seek out some great beast, perform an important task, or dick around in pole boats for a few hours before coming home. The people who partake in these are typically young men who haven’t proven themselves before, but everyone who participates is at least nominally a volunteer, and at least nominally trusted by the person organizing the expedition.

Afterward, there are usually no great big parties. It is the duty of whoever wants a share to take their share home, and the one organising the expedition is the one charged with the task of making sure everyone gets at least some medical care if they were injured, and some compensation for any wrongs performed during the hunt. The reward for participating is bragging rights, experience, and any loot they may have accumulated on the way.

ban3.png

Pregnancy
Like almost all societies known to man, a woman becoming pregnant is a cause for great celebration. They aren’t a whole city-wide affair, but generally small familial parties will be held to honour the couple - especially the woman, who has to take up the burden of carrying the child for over a year (if they’re elves). Pregnant women themselves are usually treated as having a leg up in society, with a lot of social pressure on the part of others to treat them well and with dignity.

The harming of a young child or unborn one is often seen in Fuvurian society as worse than harming an actual adult. An adult who has wasted his potential (say, a criminal) is substantially less valuable than a child full of potential and dreams.

ban3.png
Marriages
THEY LIKE A LOT OF FLOWERS AND PROBABLY HAVE A CRAZY PARTY AFTER

ban3.png
Funerals
Fuvurian society is interesting, as the gods that are most often worshipped therein are those that do not care much for funeral rites in their main scripture. It is thus inferred that if the earthly vessel does not matter much to the gods themselves, then surely it is just that - an earthly vessel. Something that the soul wears until it is time for them to pass, and they transcend to whatever heaven may be.

As such, Fuvurian funeral rites are as mournful of an affair as any, but come off as more voodoo-y than any other religious affiliation. The body is usually buried with only a thin, wooden coffin, without being embalmed except for in the case of needing to preserve a body for burial in the distant future. But equally as common is simply giving the body to the sea, wrapped in either blankets or in a coffin. These are both to honour an earthly vessel that did its job well, but also for closure for the associates of the deceased. But more so, it is to give their earthly vessel back to the earth itself, where it may propagate more life.

Specific funeral rites tend to lend themselves toward family-specific ones. While usually burning a body is seen as an insult, in some niche families it is seen as a great honour. Some may light candles to their departed, while others may sit in silent darkness, praying. Some think that heaven lies above the night sky, and stars are how they look down upon us. Some think that heaven lies in the forests and fields, where their spirits may frolic amongst the animals. As such, with this tremendous religious diversity, there are remarkably few laws enforcing one over another, outside of some obligations to the state to handle it if the deceased have no family, and what is done to criminals.

ban3.png
Festivals
There are very few actual regular state-funded festivals or holidays. It is left up to the individual who celebrates when for why and to what end. Occasionally there are festivals to Jax if a noble is feeling charitable, but not even coronations are a large public affair in Fuvurian lands.

Common to every culture, though, is celebrating the surpassing of mile stones in one’s age. The first is three years old, where the child is proven to actually be likely to survive the high infant mortality rates common to this time period. It is on their third birthday that they are officially put into state records as a citizen.

The next most important is their seventh birthday. It is here that they are legally allowed to work, or at least to seek to learn a trade (not that working before this point is exactly an enforced law). Among the nobility and reach, by now most children have already begun or are beginning to be formally tutored.

The third most important is their twenty-first birthday, where they are now legally adults in Sanardu. Most families have them take up paid work and the responsibilities of adulthood well before this point, but their twenty first birthday is when they are formally put into the records as being a well and proper adult.

House Fuvur has had a somewhat wavering history with the Gods, depending on which particular Patriarch. While Nwalme Fuvur had a much broader view of the Gods as well as holding Jax in his own high regards, the current patriarch, Trystan Fuvur, favours Jax in a far more public manner while also respecting several other deities. Jax remains the patron god of House Fuvur, whilst Sallana has also become more prominent.
This is not to say the Fuvurian people at large follow the very same beliefs - As it is not uncommon for Fuvurians to each regard the Gods differently. Below is a general summary of how they're viewed in a general sense.

ban3.png

(Credits to Blarg for writing the stuff below!)

The white names are dieties that could reasonably find quite the broad base of worship in Fuvurian lands without too much fuss from the natives. The black names are usually entities that aren't seen so much as dieties as they are irritating spirits who are left unworshipped due to their negative qualities.
The exception being Jishrim. He's not worshipped, but respected in a way of respecting natural disasters and hoping to be simply prepared for them, as well as appreciating the sense of community when dealing with them.

+

Jax.
Jax is the primo god of our rewritten variant of the pantheon. He is seen as the patron of all rich and powerful people in society, and the spreading of that wealth to those in the community. Jax is also the god in control of what is commonly believed to be the most powerful force conceivable by Fuvurians: Chance. Is there a chance that time will run backwards for a certain period? Yes. Is there a chance that the sun may suddenly wink out of existence? Yes. Is there a chance Jax will ever be circumvented or surmounted in any way? No. Because Jax is the god of chance.

Sallana.
Sallana is worshipped as a diety of emotion and passion, both obviously for copulation, and for anything else in life. Love is seen as the most intense of all passion and emotion, while hate is seen as indeed a powerful force - but also a dangerous one, as too much hate can blind you to to other emotions, passions, and joys of life. Worship of Sallana is often an extremely loose affair, even for Fuvurian standards, considered in some circles to be as simple as enjoying life that will please Sallana. This unstructured and generally hedonistic nature can lend Sallana toward being disliked by some communities, but definitely not by their youth.

===

Visage.
A god of political dealings, both good and bad, and general subterfuge. In Fuvur's society, betraying your fellow Fuvurian is seen as basically a cardinal sin, while betraying someone outside of the community is either seen as unnecessarily reputation-damaging or an overall benefit for the community depending on why you did it in the first place. In some circles, Visage is seen as a deity of any kind of accomplishment done through any kind of rhetoric as opposed to through more blunt or martial pursuits. He is typically worshipped as a god who presides over any and all kinds of political dealings, and as such may be asked before, after, or during, to in some manner bless what has just been agreed upon and that whatever deal has been made is indeed fair.

Korog.
There are basically no Dwarves in Fuvur, have never been, and likely will never be. The majority elven population has come to worship Korog for othe reasons than beer, craftsdwarfship, and dwarvenness. Korog is still seen as a god of craftsmen, but he is also seen as the god of competition of any kind. Athletes or those of a competitive tilt will often seek the favor of Korog in the hopes that whatever competition they are about to compete in will end in their favor. He is also seen as the god whom craftsmen recieve their ability from; Korog's disfavor is often shown through imperfect crafts, while his favor will come in the form of a sudden inspiration for something new.

The Grey Lady.
TGL is often seen as the ferrier of souls between this world and the next. There is no uniform picture of what the afterlife is like in Fuvurian's society, it tends to be thought of as a personalized heaven where everything bad in this world is gone, and everything good is in abundance. There is of course a lot of personal variation, and some may see TGL as more of a judge, deciding if a soul deserves the afterlife. Whatever the case may be, TGL is seen as having an undeniable impact on that part of all of our lives.

Ignis Synnove.
Ignis Synnove is seen as a diety whom creates the law and order of society. With her influence, communities are bound together through social structure and law. As justice is blind, so is Ignis Synnove, which is something that in equal parts encourages and discourages her worship. For some, they would like to take in the unfortunate individual outside of their community if they are caught stealing, to rehabilitate them. Others believe that justice should not be hampered by pity felt for those incriminated. Either way, Ignis Synnove is often worshipped by those who seek to live strictly regimented lives, and more casual worshippers can be found in the law field.

Theodra.
Theodra is seen as a deity of committing necessary unpleasantries in the name of the community. This is often in the form of the hunt, whereby the natural creatures of the world are killed, in the name of providing for the community. This could also be in the name of killing someone in cold blood to get some money to buy a toy for your kid or something. I don't know, you do you.

Shalherana.
Shalherana is seen as the mother of all creation, and also its protector, lending her particular worship from pregnant women and people who have no mothers of their own to worship otherwise. Despite this reputation, however, her worship is often only for brief periods of time, and only the extremely devout tend to worship her for any extended period, as she is also seen as severe and unforgiving. If you damage life in any way, accidentally or otherwise, you are believed to then be treated like a misbegotten child by Shalherana, and forced to seek protection by the worship of other deities which are often more powerful than Shalherana.

Jishrim.
Jishrim is seen as a god of necessary evil. Natural disasters, catastrophes, what have you that bind a community together. He is treated as serving according to the whims of the other deities, but not being their servant, if that makes sense. Jishrim will often be prayed to that he will not catch someone defenceless and alone with his disasters, and that when they strike a community, they are not too destructive.

Silas.
Silas could be considered to have some overlap with Rahas, in that opinions tend to be mixed. Are scholarly pursuits good? Well, sometimes, they could also be overall a negative for a community. Is honesty and openness good? Maybe, but only in certain contexts. Silas is often worshipped by a handful of quiet scholars who aren't particularly devout, but want his blessing for their research.

Vermella.
There are as few goat people in Fuvurian society as there are dwarves. Vermella is often treated as an obscure diety who has some overlap between Visage and Jishrim. A trickster, but a jovial trickster, who will often delight in causing playful misfortunes that may or may not actually cause any harm. Capricious, queer, and unusual, Vermella is often not worshipped beside for trying to curry favor to keep her away, or try to bring her playful ire down on their enemy. Her main base of worship is through young people who don't feel they belong in society, or are too strange and unorthodox to fit in well, and so relate to the diety. She is not an individual of regular and consistent worship.

Crusade.
Crusade is basically left unchanged. War is generally seen as the failure of diplomacy, and so Crusade is often blamed for it. He is thought of as a blunt, uncouth, and generally unappealing diety. He is not worshipped often in Sanardu, beside for the odd outlier who for some reason thinks diplomacy should be set aside in favor of being kind of an asshole.

Skraag.
Skraag is associated with the occult, and specifically, with the tempting allure of it. Do you want to live forever? Do you want to garner power inconceivable through arcane rituals? Well all you gotta do is make a pact with this lazily mashed together satanic archetype and get boned for some kind of moral reason or w/e happens in fables. He is also associated with the undead, and they kinda ate our houses and such not too long ago.

Rahas.
Fuvurians tend to polarize in their opinions of Rahas. He is considered in some circles to be the embodiment of what society ought to be, everyone standing as equals, together, one united community. Others believe that that is so idealistic and naiive that it hurts their stomachs.
