House Regional Laws and Customs

The laws of the Land of the House Telarion and the people of it are varied and complex for those that are visiting upon the city. From the standards of addressing others how you are represented when breaking the law to proper way for customs and courtesies in the city and land around it.

Common Courtesies​

◄ Interactions with Others

◄ Guard:

✦ When approaching a guard at the front gates to be admitted to the city, a person will stop to be addressed. At such point in time, if a person is wearing a weapon of any form it will be taken and as per the laws, given a number and stored or the fine shall be paid and it will be wrapped in wire and the Talerion house seal will pressed onto it with green wax.
✦ Treating the guards with respect is not only a kind practice, but enforced. They are here to protect the people, and as such will be treated with dignity and honor.
✦ Typically when greeting a guard while on duty only a bow or curtsy is acceptable as they are currently doing their job and need to remain focused on the task at hand.
✦ When greeting a guard off duty, treat them as any other citizen. A bow and curtsy, an acknowledgment by words or something similar.​

◄ Nobility:

✦ Nobility will be treated with respect, though they will not be held higher than any other class. The respect is in response to their status, but it will not be held over any other in an attempt to further themselves.
✦ Nobility who live within the city will be made well aware that they are to treat each of the classes or those who they run into while they visit with the same respect that they receive.
✦ Typically in greeting it is acceptable to bow or curtsy with the expectation of the same to be returned. The same goes also for parting pleasantries.
✦ When speaking with nobility, use their given titles. They have earned their title by one way or another, and as such deserve to be addressed in such a manner.​

◄ Visiting Nobility:

✦ The same will be extended to visiting Nobility as those who live within the city.
✦ If there is a known common greeting from the House or Empire that the visiting noble hails from, then it will be used. IE: If they bow, then you bow. If they curtsy, regardless of gender, then you curtsy.
✦ Respect is expected at all times. Do not expect visiting nobles to think the same way that those inside the Slyannen think, but that does not mean that they will be treated with disrespect.
✦ If any of the visiting Nobility has overstayed their welcome or begin to cause a scene, only a guard or council member may address them. At that point in time, it had reached beyond common courtesy, and will be handled by those in a position to take care of it.​

◄ Middle Class:

✦ Typically, middle class does not carry any form of title, but in the instant that they are given one of any form, they are to be addressed by their title just like nobility. They have earned their title, please use it.
✦ While middle class also typically do not own any form of land, it is not unheard of for someone of middle class to rise above the norm and purchase a home or a larger mass of property.
✦ Just like every other house, middle class is to be treated with respect at all times and the standard greetings and pleasantries of bowing, curtsying, and speaking in a level and clear tone is to be expected.​

◄ Peasantry Class:

✦ The lowest class, but they are still valued greatly and treated as equals. They hold no land or titles, and usually stay in places like the taverns or in the smaller homes that decorate the housing district of Slyannen.
✦ If there is a situation where someone finds visiting peoples treating the lower classes with malice or otherwise, it is to be reported. This unacceptable behavior.​

◄ Visiting Another's House:

✦ One should never enter a house without knocking. It is rude, and if this does happen then the owners of the property are more than in their right to have the invader removed.
✦ If someone steps into a person's home without permission, and the owner has stated clearly that they do not want the uninvited guest there, then the owner is within their right to have them removed.
✦ If a friend of the family shows, and they do not knock, it is typically a common courtesy to at least for the person to announce their presence. Simply showing up and doing nothing else could startle the people living in the home.
✦ If they do not announce, and they show up in the person's home anyway, then once again they are in their full right to have them removed. Even if it might cause question.​

Laws Of The People
Laws are upheld and enforced by the city guard, The Knights of Rahas. Only members bearing their colors and seals can enforce the law. Before any sort of punishment is given, the accused will stand trial in the court yard of the city, with all members of the council present. They will be given the chance to state their case, and at that point in time if any evidence against or for the person in question may be given.​

◄ Weapon Ownership:

✦ Weapons in the city is forbidden. All weapons are prohibited with the exclusion of nobles of the city itself, guards, or those with licenses for honorable duel.​

✦ All weapons are to be turned over at the gate and ticketed and numbered, or the person may enter and pay to have their weapons wrapped in wire then sealed with sage green wax and the Telarion family seal.​

✦ Every weapon brought into the city shall be inspected upon the leaving for evidence of tampering with the printed seal or the wire.​

✦ If the seal is found tampered with, a heavy fine of ten thousand radiants is levied. Also, it would result in the expulsion from trade and commerce in the city for a year's time.​

◄ Theft:

✦ Theft of any form is not tolerated. Theft is treated as a serious crime no matter how much the item in question was worth.​

✦ Punishment for this crime is flogging, the amount dependent upon how much the item is worth. Should this happen more than twice, the person in question is to be expelled from Slyannen, and kept from the city for a year's worth of time.​

◄ Assault:

✦ Assault upon anyone is punished equally regardless of status or rank as an act that disrupts the peace.​

✦ Assault against anyone is punished by being jailed for a week and flogged a dozen times.​

◄ Murder:

✦ Murder is punished equally be it high or low born as the act is dishonorable and unethical.​

✦ Punishment for this crime is being hung in the city or town square. This is done as a means to prove that murder is completely unaccepted and will be treated with just as little mercy as the one who committed the murder. ​

◄ Destruction of Private Property:

✦ Any form of destruction of land assets or property by the reigning house or military will be paid by the house or military.​

✦ Payment of rebuilding or replacing the property in question is to be expected from the person who caused the damage if between two individuals.​

✦ If the person cannot pay it back, they enter the family as an indentured servant. This person shall not be treated poorly or the family will forfeit the repayment.​

◄ Dueling:

✦ All deaths obtained through a duel will not be considered murder if both parties followed the code set in place in the book of Menirs D'bel'lain, and the families of the dead will be paid a sum for the death itself.​

✦ If a person cannot cover the cost of the death they will be jailed and their family forced to work of the debt.​

✦ Dueling can only be done with rapiers.​

✦ Dueling must be agreed to by both parties.​

✦ Dueling is restricted to the noble class. Commoners cannot challenge or be challenged to protect them and their families from being exploited.​

✦ Dueling is also only permitted by those holding the proper authentication and licenses of the noble class.​

◄ Treason

✦ Any person or group found constructing an effigy with the intent to burn or create a harmful message against the kingdom, and by which would cause discord and disharmony of its citizens, will be promptly tried and if convicted will be exiled. Only by means of a positive ruling of more than sixty five percent in agreement in the Council, after a trial hearing in which the person or group has a chance to plead their case, will the exile be lifted.​

✦ The people or group of people found or suspected of conspiring against the noble houses for the intent of overthrowing, killing, maiming, or destruction of their property will be promptly tried and if convicted will be exiled. Only by means of a positive ruling of more than sixty five percent in agreement in the Council, after a trial hearing in which the person or group has a chance to plead their case, will the exile be lifted.​

✦ Should any persons, group, or organization based inside of Slyannen found aiding and abetting rebels or traitors to the city, be it in forms of currency, arms, armor or aid in hiding or escaping the country, will be tried and if convicted will be exiled. Should the people in question be of noble rank, all their lands and titles will be stripped and their house disbanded. If this form of reason results in the murder of anyone from within the city, their names will stricken from all records and forgotten. Only by means of a positive ruling of more than seventy five percent in agreement in the Council, after a trial hearing in which the person or group has a chance to plead their case, will the exile be lifted.​

✦ While these are more specific points, any and all forms of treason will be handled in the same matter as the previously mentioned examples.​

◄ Children Born as Bastards:

✦ By Law all children born as bastards must be taken in by the family once discovered by the father.​

✦ The child will be recognized by the father and be considered of his family line and lineage. This law is established to prevent noble or royal lines from creating untenable situation in the line of succession.​

◄ Impersonating Appointed Officials:

✦ The impersonation of any public appointed officials whether they be government,military,officers, or nobility in itself is all treated as a high crime in the lands. All those found doing such a crime will be tried before a jury of nobles and then if found guilty hanged.​

◄ Forgery:

✦ The forging of any official paperwork for any means is not tolerated by the Telarion people or the family itself. Anyone found forging papers or documents including the forging of signatures of another will be tried and then lose a hand for their offense.​

✦ The forgery of coin or any other valuable form of trade commodity is also punishable by the same laws.​

Rights of Women
The rights of woman and that of property are very different in the lands of Telarion woman in the lands, hold property and own all standing structures in the lands. While men can hold property it is very out of the norm. While men hold the business and daily dealings of things woman own the roofs over their heads.While owning the property the woman do not own the family name themselves, men take great pride in family names. This compromise protects men from women who would marry and then divorce them for all they are worth. In case of a divorce a woman gets a small amount of what the man owns and is usually agreed upon in a legal matter in the first years of marriage, and is revisited every few years in case of growth of assets.​

◄ Peasantry Women:

✦ Peasant women own the homes and farms that they live and work on as well may hold stakes in small business runnings. They marry whomever they wish or desire while men try to find woman that will bring them the best in life.​

◄ Middle Class Women:

✦ Woman hold ownership of the taverns,inns,wharfs and the many other numerous business holdings. While owning the business establishment physical structures many women do not run them themselves, usually finding themselves capable men to do so for them.​

◄ Noble Women:

✦ Noble woman own all the lands in the realm, they hold ownership of the castles,palaces,manors and orchards and anything else. While they leave the men to their politics and child games as they call it. Marrying men who can bring them status,wealth, and power to further their family names.​

◄ Enrollment in Military

✦ Woman hold every right to join the military in the lands they can fight joust become knights and hold military positions of power. Just like the males as long as they show they have the competence and understanding of the role position and risks involved in such an undertaking.​
