Ddaug

Lord of Altera
Kabira

An opportunistic creature which is locked to the deserts of Altera. These large and dangerous pests have two distinct stages of life, so distinct most wouldn't expect them to be the same creature at all. First they are known as the Yarqa-Kabira, which after 3 to 10 years mutate into Yatir-Kabira. While not outwardly aggressive to people, these creatures will take any chance they get to acquire food, often leading them to those who venture into the deserts.

Yarqa-Kabira

Physiology:
In its first stage of life, the Kabira takes the form of a very large maggot, averaging anywhere between 4-12 feet long and 2-4 feet in diameter, depending on how long it has been alive and how successful it has been in obtaining proper nutrition. The Yarqa-Kabira live explicitly under the desert sands, having no eyes, ears, or nose. They rely solely on vibrations felt in the sand. Despite being so large, the Yarqa are able to travel at a remarkable 3-6mph under the sand. Their mouth, at the front of their body, can open up to 4 feet in diameter to trap its pray in its thousands of barbed teeth. Though rarely seen, their skin is rough and is a light greenish-yellow.
Yarqa Sexual Dimorphism:
The male Yarqa typically only reach about 7 feet long and 3 feet in diameter, mostly because they tend to mutate into Yatir-Kabira after only 3-6 years. This is contrary to the longer lasting female Yarqa, which don't mutate until after 7-10 years, allowing them to grow much larger.
Climate:
The Kabira require a very hot and arid climate, leaving them locked to the worlds deserts.
Diet:
The Kabira, in both forms, are strictly carnivorous. However they are not picky, and will eat any meat they can find, dead or alive.
Hunting-Yarqa:
Yarqa will eat anything that ventures onto the surface of the sand. Each usually have a hunting grounds of 2-4 miles. They swallow up their pray from just below the surface of the sand, opening their mouths wide enough to catch their pray in their barbed teeth. If the pray is too large, they may spend some time to fully swallow it or might naw what they have trapped off from the rest of the body. They'll attempt to catch anything living, from bugs to horses. Although they usually hunt alone, it is known for more to be attracted when one Yarqa tries to catch its prey.
Yields:
Their thousands of 3-4 inch teeth are prized possessions, known to even be used as arrow heads or knives.
Mutation:
The mutation process of the Kabira takes place after 3-6 years for males and 7-10 years for females, with the more well-fed Yarqa-Kabira mutating earlier. During the process, the Kabira will lay still about 3ft under the sand for 6 months, creating a hardened shell out of its old skin. Eventually, they emerge from the sands as Yatir-Kabira.
Lifespan:
The Kabira maintains it's three distinct stages of life. First, being born as Yarqa-Kabira, and maintaining this form for 3-10 years until it begins it's cocoon stage. Here, the Kabira forms a hardened shell with it's old skin, where it will lay quietly under the sand for 6 months. During this cocoon stage the Kabira's physical form drastically mutates. It grows new limbs and disposes of old parts of the body, such as many of it's thousands of teeth, which will remain in the sands where the mutation took place. In time, the Kabira will emerge from the sand in it's third stage of life, as a Yatir-Kabira.
Yatir-Kabira

Physiology:
The Yatir are dramatically different from their former selves, taking the form of a giant fly. These flies are typically between 3-6 feet long and 2-3 feet tall, with a wingspan of 6-9 feet. Their bodies are a golden-brown color, with four transparent wings. They have four flimsy legs, with two strong armored front "legs" which act more as barbed spears for hunting. They also have razored beaks, with only a few of their former barbed teeth still inside of their mouths. These flies are capable of flying between 15-20mph. These flies have large circular eyes, but also still rely largely on their ability to sense vibrations.
Yatir Sexual Dimorphism:
Opposite of the Yarqa, the male Yatir are typically much larger than their female counterparts, being around 4-6 feet long and 2-3 feet high. The female Yatir also have typically smaller wings. The female Yatirs smaller size is due to the bizarre mating ritual, in which after the female Yatir mates, it buries itself in the sand and dies. Thus the female Yatir only live until they mate, giving them a much shorter life span, closer to 1-5 years, while the male Yatir can live up to 10 more years.
Climate:
The Kabira require a very hot and arid climate, leaving them locked to the worlds deserts.
Habitat:
The Kabira live only in the arid deserts, with the Yarqa locked to the sands themselves. The Yatir are known to sometimes venture a few miles from the deserts edge, but rarely travel far. The Yatir spend much of the day in the rocky desert mountains, hunting over the sands in the night.
Diet:
The Kabira, in both forms, are strictly carnivorous. However they are not picky, and will eat any meat they can find, dead or alive.
Hunting-Yatir:
The Yatir usually hunt alone, except for once every 5 years before their breading ritual, where they hunt together as a swarm. They are also attracted to each other after one Yatir finds its prey. They catch their pray with barbed spear-like front limbs, then fly away and naw on them with their beak mouths. They'll hunt for anything, although with large prey sometimes they're known to just latch on, and not let go until they kill the creature. They'll also eat dead or rotting meat if found.
Behavior:
The Kabira, in both forms, are very much opportunistic creatures. They scavenge and fight for anything they can find. They are largely unsocial besides meeting at large kills and their breeding ritual every 5 years.
Aging:
Kabira typiclly live a total of 10-16 years. Besides their mutation, the Kabira only physically age in the sense that the older Kabira tend to be more successful hunters, and thus much larger.
Yields:
The Yatir-Kabira have exceptionally strong beaks and spear-limbs.

Rumor tells tale that sightings of these creatures have been sparse lately. It is unknown how or why, but it is known to those who have actually witnessed them that they have not seen many of them even before. However.. there have been signs of something large and similar leaving trails around. Time may tell what it could be.

(Out of interest of freshening beast lore- these creatures may be endangered now)

Edit: Now extinct in its exact form.
