The Union of Varyn and Kane
- Political Map and Standings -

109476

The de facto head of each house has married, combining their estates, armies, and resources into one cohesive state. However, the state is not so united as it would initially seem. The two realms which make up the Kaltstaat remain distinct, with Varyn having its own vassals, and Kane having its own, and the loyalty to one house over the other is implicit but not formalized into their feudal contract, given the youth of the new northern state. To say nothing of the claim that is as bold as it is ambiguous to be king and queen of the north.

{ A Single Realm of Two }

At the highest level, the two realms are united and as one. The expectation is that the lords of each house shall bow as low to one as another, but the actual terms of their feudal contracts are to one or the other for the most part. It is taken for granted that Kane is able to nominate a successor to her domain of the Kaltstaat, but that heir holds no legitimacy to the County of Varyn.

The domain of the Kaltstaat is made up of several different settlements, each with their own ruler. Some by appointment, and some by feudal right.

{ House Kane }
Three of the settlements of the Kaltstaat are under explicit royal rule. This is to say that they are a part of the demesne of the queen, personally ruled by them.

-- Queensport --
Queensport is under the explicit, legitimate, and permanent rule of House Kane. It is the capital, and it is an expectation that whoever rules Queensport rules the Kaltstaat and is the matriarch of the family itself as well. Whoever holds Queensport holds the north. It is a city of industry, lacking much in the way of arable land for fields, and relies heavily on fish, game, and especially imports of grain from its vassal settlements.

-- Ironhaven --
Ironhaven is also the subject of royal rule, but it has been ruled by a steward for longer than the rule of the present queen, and her predecessor. It has iron mines, which supply the city of Queensport for its local industry.

-- Emberdust Mines --
Emberdust Mines are to the more southern reaches of the Kaltstaat, a source of many varieties of stone, coal, and redstone - And prides itself on being one of the only salt mines in the continent. Though it is far enough it is not marked up upon the main political map and is a small community entirely focused on transporting the wares up to Grünmauer.

The other two settlements are ruled by landed knights, who do not own the land of their dominion, but are granted it with an expectation that they shall be allowed to continue its governance for so long as they are honor their feudal contract to the queen: but, it is not necessarily inherited by their heir, and is officially the property of the queen directly, only leased out to the house in question as part of the estates granted as an award.

-- Motte Eiche --
Motte Eiche is the sole castle which protects the only overland route from the Anhalder Valley into Queensport, filtering out bandits and foreign armies, and allowing through legitimate traders and travelers who can afford the border tax.
- It is under the purview of House Longtree. -

-- Grünmauer --
Grünmauer is the southernmost settlement of the Kaltstaat, established to make use of the arable soil of the Anhalder Valley, and to serve as an outpost for trade and the growth of wheat and other crops which cannot be grown at Queensport, as well as the herding of livestock, and the rearing of horses.
- It is current under the purview of no one, left open in waiting for someone to be granted it for their service. -

{ House Varyn }
The County of Varyn is made up of only three settlements, which are themselves much more compactly arranged than those of the Kaltstaat.

-- Oren --
Oren is under the personal rule of the Count of Varyn, serving as the capital. It has ample airable land for wheat and other hardy crops, but the growing season is quite short. It has some fishing capacity as well, but not near so much as Queensport.

-- Märzwache --
Märzwache, a castle so close to Oren that it is one hour of hard riding from the capital, serves as a southern march delineating the border of the County of Varyn.
- It is under the purview of House Walanescu. -

-- Meermotte -
Meermotte is a recent vassal to both the King and Queen but has been formally shifted under the Varyn banner for its current placement. It will serve as a sea defence though is currently in progress with funding from House Kane.
- It is under the purview of House Conrad. -

Meermotte area is a principality now bringing in various islands, and de Courtnay brings in the Eberlands - Thread is generally outdated too. Theyre more united now as an empire and not as two states recently married (and they have a son too).

Watching this Empire grow in RP from the ashes of the Anhald was very rewarding =)
