Legend
These are currently not in effect, for House Brus is residing within the lands of Azerwind, resulting in the leading laws being their own [x]

The laws

1) Do not vandalize property you do not own regardless of the position of the owner. Vandalizing citizen housing is as much a crime as vandalizing House Brus' main structures.

2) Do not take what is not yours, regardless of the owner's position.
Stealing from citizens is as much a crime as stealing from those in charge.

3) Do not dishonour yourself by going back on your word, breaking an oath, cheating and so on.

4) Do not violate House Brus customs. Dare to ask what confuses you.

5) Do not abandon your brothers and sisters during a battle for this is the ultimate form of cowardice. Only exceptions are the rare case where the one in charge orders a retreat.

Law of Brus
Deserting

The crime of fleeing during combat, abandoning your brothers and sisters, without having sustained sufficient damage to be considered a valid reason to discontinue your part of the fight.
  • If the deserter is an outsider, they will be shown no respect or pardon upon further contact with House Brus and will be captured on sight to await further punishment. Punishment ranges from loss of a foot to death.
  • If the deserter is a member of House Brus, they will be judged accordingly by a council of randomly chosen members of House Brus and it's lord or lady. Punishment ranges from 'pardon' accompanied a brand and either serving a sentence or a fine to excommunication accompanied by either a branding on part of the skin that is not visible when wearing armour or loss of a part of the offender's body. Severity of the punishment depends on severity of the damage caused by the deserter.

Treason

The crime of endangering and ultimately betraying House Brus, it's military, it's citizens and it's allies for personal gain.
  • The one that committed treason shall be put on trial before a council of randomly chosen members of House Brus and it's lord or lady.
  • If the one that committed treason has been found guilty but tried to save loved ones by doing it, they shall receive a less severe punishment ranging jailtime and excommunication to loss of a part of the offender's body and excommunication.

Assault

The crime of harming, attempting to harm or attempting to slay members, soldiers and allies of House Brus or purposefully harming visitors in a dishonourable way or not, without being provoked.
  • The offender's arms and armour will be confiscated for a limited amount of time or permanently, depending on the severity of the harm caused.
  • The offender may be sentenced to serve a certain amount of time in jail, depending on severity of the harm caused or they pay a hefty fine which will be used to compensate the victim. The sentence can expand to removal of a part of the offender's body in case the bodily harm caused is beyond critical.

Murder

The crime of slaying another person outside of duels, battles of war and trials by combat.
  • In case of an outsider slaying an outsider or one of House Brus within the lands owned by the lord or lady, their vassals, housemembers of citizens, the criminal shall promptly be executed.
  • In case of one of House Brus (be it a family member, House member, citizen or ally) slaying an outsider they shall be judged by a council. The council shall consist of several randomly chosen citizens or House Members and the lord or lady. If the murderer has not broken a vow, oath, promise or custom by killing the outsider they shall be marked, fined and serve a sentence. The severity of the fine, mark and sentence are determined by the council. If the murderer has broken a vow, oath, promise or custom by killing the outsider they shall be executed.
  • In case of one of House Brus (be it a family member, House member, citizen or ally) spills blood of his or her own they shall be judged by a council. The council shall consist of several randomly chosen citizens or House Members and the lord or lady. If the murder has been deemed an accident or a necessary thing the offender shall be punished accordinly. The offending hand shall be removed if it is found to be an accident. In the case of a necessary murder the offender will have several fingers removed and/or pay a hefty fine. If the murder has been deemed to neither be just nor an accident the murderer shall be placed in a holding cell for a maximum period of a week. This period of time in the holding cell shall be used to allow the convicted murderer to say his or her farewells to visiting friends and family and for him or her to pray and come to terms with the sentence.

Theft

The crime of removing property from a person or faction, removing property from one's house or forcing a person to hand over his or her valuables.
  • The severity sentence depends on either caused injuries or caused destruction, or both.
  • If the stolen property is not worth that much and both physical and material damage dealt are below moderate, the criminal shall return the property with an additional amount of radiants equal to what it's worth. They shall also serve a sentence of one week.
  • If the criminal has caused a more than a little physical or material harm or stolen property worth more than one month's salary of the victim, the victim shall return the stolen property. In addition, the criminal loses a finger.
  • If the criminal has severely injured the victim they shall be marked and excommunicated.

Oathbreaking and defamation

The crime of breaking an oath, vow or one's word and spreading lies and insults concerning the House, it's military, it's citizens or it's allies.
  • If an oath, vow or one's word has been purposefully broken, the oathbreaker shall be marked, serve a sentence and then be excommunicated.
  • If an oath, vow or one's word has not been broken on purpose, the oathbreaker shall be marked or pay a fine and serve a sentence.
  • If an oath, vow or one's word has been purposefully broken and caused severe bodily harm or death to one or more citizens, members or allies of House Brus, they shall serve a sentence and then be excommunicated. The sentence serves as a time for the oathbreakers to recover from the removal of their tongue. Their tongue will be removed to prevent them from swearing an oath or vow and ever giving one's word for the rest of their lives. For if they break their oath, vow or word once they shall break the oath, vow or word again in the future.
  • If lies and insults are spread concerning House Brus and it's allies but they are not of serious nature or not as harmful, the offending person shall apologize, pay a fine that fits the severity of the slander and lies and they shall learn to hold their tongue.
  • If lies and insults are spread concerning House Brus and it's allies and they are of serious nature or severely harmful, the offending person shall pay a hefty fine and either be removed or suspended from House Brus.
  • If the offending person has purposefully spread severe lies they shall serve a short sentence. This sentence serves as time for the liars to recover from the removal of their tongue.

Assault or murder through witchcraft
- The crime of harming or murdering a member or ally of House Brus and it's military.
  • If the victim is harmed but not killed by the magic, the witch or warlock shall serve a short sentence. This sentence serves as time for the witch or warlock to recover from the removal of either their tongue, fingers, hand or both hands. This serves as a way to prevent the witch or warlock from aiming spells or citing incantations.
  • If the victim is killed by the magic, the witch or warlock shall be burned at the stake.

Kidnapping and slavery
The crime of capturing another being and keeping them against their will, perhaps even forcing them to work for you.
  • It is seen as kidnapping when the victim of the crime has been removed from their homes without having broken any laws or without the offending party having any right, by law, to take them. Kidnapping also includes the rightfully capturing of a person outside of the realm your laws are in effect unless the victim has been found guilty of war crimes. It is still kidnapping, however, if they are taken from the area surrounding the Grand Shrines at the Crossroads by shedding blood.
  • It is seen as slavery when the victim has been kidnapped or forced to follow the offending party into their area of influence where they are then held against their will or forced to accept their fate by numerous threats only to then be put to work to benefit the offending party without getting a fair share of payment in the form of proper bedding, freedom of movement inside the property, plenty of food and safety from aggression.
  • The punishment for kidnapping with permanent injury and slavery are more severe than the punishments for capturing without physical or mental harm and with good care.
  • The punishment for capturing a person but still treating them as a person with minimal to no harm (both mental and physical) will result in a reasonable fine that will be handed over to the victim as well as serving a sentence or receiving a mark before being banished from the lands.
  • The punishment for capturing a person and treating them like one would treat an object or animal accompanied with atleast a little mental and physical harm will result in a hefty fine or a prison sentence, removal of their dominant hand and a mark which will have them captured if they ever set foot on House Brus lands ever again.
  • The punishment for slavery that is more like involuntary servant work with a proper bed, proper food and drinks and proper treatment with little to no actual injury will result in two of either:
  1. Removal of a finger.
  2. A hefty fine to compensate the victim.
  3. Serving a long sentence.
Accompanied by a mark or brand and banishment.
  • The punishment for slavery that includes the victim being treated like an animal or less and/or serious bodily or mental harm will result in the loss of the offender (or everyone within the offending party)'s dominant hand and the ring finger of the other hand. They are then marked and banished from the lands to be captured upon next visit.
