Rahkay'inu, The Island in the Clouds

+History+
Long ago, the Makani people lived in relative peace and strife of the average Alteran. Blissfully unaware of the outside world, the Pantheon, and the tribulations befalling the entire rest of Altera. These feathered beings built a folklore and society around their central deity Manna, a fledgling God, new to the divinities of the Planar. Their culture sprawled across their island home of Vata'inu, suspended above the oceans east of the main continent. Twas the will of Manna they all proclaimed. The Makani lived, quite literally, above it all and deemed their elevated status as a sign that Manna favors them above most non-winged life.

Then the Makani had their first taste of the outside world, centuries ago. In the tumult of Corruption and relative ease of the winds, a stray airship found itself adrift and crashed into the side of Vata'inu. Aboard this ship were a crew of humans, elves and all manner of Trans-Alteran dwellers bound to a life in the skies. The Makani were abuzz. This was the first time "the groundlings" interacted with the Makani people. In a stroke of mercy, the ruling class of Vata'inu, the A'keiyah, a clan of makani hand picked from birth in esoteric rituals, decreed that the Alteran "groundlings" may live and work on Vata'inu so long as they do not meddle with the culture of the native bird-folk. Over the rest of the days of their natural lives, the mainland Alterans exchanged their language and customs with the Makani people. In the next few centuries, wild stories were passed down from storyteller to storyteller about groundlings and their language of "Kayamon". They were base and vile people. The Makani were clearly superior, the elders proclaimed. These featherless folk are demons, the A'keiyah espoused. Little did they know, their lives were all about to change.

The Great Disaster came in an agonizing five days. During the Incursion of Visage's son, the moon was struck with a dastardly violet. Vata'inu began to rumble. Fissures split the rock apart and boulders began to fall into the ocean depths below. On the fifth day of the violet moon, it all came crashing down. Vata'inu was on a collision course for the ocean. A cataclysm came and tore their lives asunder. The surviving Makani leapt off their falling homestead and took to the skies in all directions. It was ocean all around, where could they possibly go? In a cruel or blessed twist of fate, the makani eyed a whole fleet of ships travelling from the west, having came to investigate the tidal waves caused by Vata'inu's gradual destruction.

The survivors made landfall on the Eastern Continent of Altera. The Makani were scared and confused as they should be. Their home has fallen and now they found themselves right in the maw of the "demons" they have castigated for centuries. A large group of survivors settled the wilds and attempted to establish a new home for the Makani on this seemingly hostile continent. Their efforts were valiant, but the advent of Qlippoth left them scattered to the winds once more.

The disasters have largely ended, peace has returned to the continent once more. A new group of Makani, having questioned their faith, their society and their way of life as a whole, have chosen to once again rebuild their people once more. A lone spire looms over the junction of the Blackrush and Eastwatch rivers. It's plateau graces the clouds as though it were an island within the sky. Rahkay'inu they called it. Only time will tell if this settlement is to survive...

+Overview+

Rahkay'inu is the latest Makani settlement in the Eastern Continent. It is settled right here. This is currently a poor settlement, scant in food and general resources, but it is a growing hub for makani. Few outsiders are aware of the existence of Rahkay'inu and even fewer know its precise location. The populace is run by a caretaker government awaiting a time when life becomes stable such that a formal government can establish. Life in Rahkay'inu is difficult due to the lack of resources, but past that, it seems that the settlement suffers an identity crisis. Contrary to the strict clan system of old, every single makani is put to work in all manner of jobs to keep the place from falling apart. One can encounter Makani ranging from staunch traditionalists who will gladly lay their life down if it means reinstating the A'keiyah to disillusioned youth and primarily Po'Makani who yearn for social change. This tension is further underscored by the fact that the current caretaker is a Po'Makani himself.

If you wish to play a makani, follow the steps outlined in this here lore page. Pretty much, I think the makani were a very well crafted race and it would be a shame for them to die off from inactivity so I decided that I could invest my time into making a proper roost. If you are at all interested in making a makani, just read the rules and the lore behind these creatures and I can promise you a boatload of fun RP.
