STRANDIR HIERARCHY

The Strandir do not adhere to the systems of nobility used by other highborn families and houses across the Eastern Kingdoms. The core of Strandir hierarchy is focused on the family as one unit, not as individuals. The ruling family of the Strandir act as a ruling council, on which all of the grown adults - both male and female - hold equal power. All of these individuals are referred to as Chieftains or Chieftesses. The same principles are applied to individual families within the clan, which are close-knit by nature to care for their young and their elderly.

It is through the ruling family that all matters regarding the clan are passed through. But a system where all matters require the approval of a council would be incredibly inefficient, requiring the family to constantly be together to handle anything, whether within the lands of the clan, or in foreign states dealing with diplomacy. To circumvent this issue, all of the Chieftains and Chieftesses are given individual titles, granting them domain over specific areas of the rule of law. For example, the title of Earl of Stoltfar is traditionally bestowed upon the elder chieftain. With such titles, they can individually handle any issues that relate to the area their title grants them dominion over. However, the family council maintains the power to ultimately overrule any individual’s decision if necessary. Typically, the full family council is only consulted in particularly important cases, such as in dealing with foreign powers under potentially hostile circumstances or other pressing matters facing the clan at large.

The current ruling council and their full titles are listed below:

Segar Strand
Chieftain
Earl of Stoltfar

Eleanor Strand
Chieftess
Warden of the Hunt

Outside of the ruling family, the clanspeople follow a basic hierarchy. The common people are referred to simply as clansmen and clanswomen. To be considered a clansman or clanswoman, one need only own a house on the lands of the Strandir. A home to defend is the root of a good clansman’s honor.

The trusted and strong among the clansmen and clanswomen may be named Warriors of the Strandir. The Warriors are the favored, the battle-proven and the honorable men and women of the clan who carry the duty of enforcing the law and keeping order. Upon being named a Warrior, a clansperson has the duty to defend not only their own home and the lands of the clan, but any of their clanspeople, no matter the circumstance. They are the men- and women-at-arms of the clan, the first to be called upon in any case of a threat upon the lands of the Strandir. To be recognized as a Warrior is an honor - and to disgrace the name is a great shame worthy of exile or death.

There is no way for someone outside of the ruling family to rule over townships, fortresses, or any other manner of holding. There are no ‘vassal’ houses within the clan - as all families beneath the ruling family are considered equal to each other in the eyes of the law, no matter how wealthy or fruitful, and regardless of their origins and lineage.

There is but one position considered lower than the common clanspeople - the exiled, and those who were executed for crimes and have returned to life. They are those who murdered or otherwise betrayed their fellow clanspeople. They are the oathbreakers, the cowards, the people who have brought disgrace upon themselves in the eyes of the ruling family and in the eyes of Theodra. They are the lowest of the low. Death is considered a mercy upon such individuals, for they are lost to vice and shame.

STRANDIR LAW

Strandir law is rooted in Theodra’s doctrine. “Do not give mercy, and do not expect it.” These words are taken to heart in every law. There are only a few written laws, but the ruling family holds the right to judge any individual for any action that is considered a betrayal of the clan, that causes unrest and discord within the lands.

+ Do not betray your family. Those who betray their families have betrayed their clan, and will be cast out to live as exiles for the rest of their days.
+ Hold to your oaths. Those who break their pledged word may forfeit their place among the clan, and possibly their lives, dependent on the nature of the oath.
+ Do not insult the name of Theodra. Her example guides the will of the clan, and She will be respected as such. Those who deliberately and grievously spit upon Theodra’s name and doctrine will be cast out as exiles.
+ Honor the Hunt. Those who hunt without honor, who overhunt, who hunt for sport and for trophies, who do not use all that they hunt but allow it to spoil, will be cast out as exiles.
+ Uphold unity and peace within the clan, and honor them as pledged brothers and sisters. Those who are found to be against the peace and unity of the clan will be brought before the ruling council, who will show no mercy to ensure that they do not cause further discord.
