Overview
The Keepers of the Veil are a successor organization to the Inquisition of Saint Jacqueline. While the Inquisition may nominally still exist in some notional form, for all intents and purposes it has been disbanded and existing members who still wish to serve The Inheritor are now apart of its successor organization instead. The Keepers of the Veil exist in an effort to delay the now inevitable destruction of the Veil that seperates the material world from other planes of existence.
While it retains the legacy of its prior organization, the Keepers of the Veil are not concerned with considerations of an Inquisition. The failure or success of other states does not matter. Whether someone is a mage or a blessed does not matter. The integrity of foreign churches; whether someones spreads truth or honesty; what laws are just or unjust; what persons are agents of chaos; and so on, and so on.
The Keepers of the Veil are solely concerned with the preservation of the Veil, learning of the outsiders beyond it, and preparing the world for the Immutable Truth.
Structure
There are three Chapters, and a leader for each known as a Chapter Master. The Inheritor is still the highest leader, who inherits the responsibility of all members past, present, and future, and their actions.
Chapter of War
Paladins of the Chapter of War concern themselves with martial skill as their highest priority. Not just skill at arms, but fortifications, siege engines, tactics, and strategy. The Chapter of War is the mailed fist of the Keepers, who both defend the Veil and strike out beyond it into Hell to show strength against the invaders. Any ventures of the other two chapters should have a member of the Chapter of War with them for protection. Junior members of the organization who have not assumed the rank of Paladin are known as Knights; those who have not yet been knighted are known as Squires.
Chapter of Miracles
Scryers which weave miracles into the world, who are expected to use magic - whether divine or arcane, whether for good or will - in the furtherance of the protection of the Veil. With its inevitable destruction inevitable, arcane magic used on the typical scale of mortals is no longer particularly concerning for the Keepers of the Veil. Members of this Chapter are expected to go forth to understand and fight in ways that only those who have learned magic can.
Chapter of The Bibliotheca
The Bibliotheca existing is as much a mad ambition as anything any man has ever attempted. A single repository of all things ever known or learned of by man, in all fields of science, magic, theology, of all knowledge. In this way all threats may be understood, all cures known, all sciences researched, and ignorance shall never again be the undoing of great works. For such a thing to exist, it must begin. Scribes undertake its beginning, cataloguing all things of this plane and beyond that the Keepers of the Veil have ever known and are in the process of learning. Not only of cataloguing and writing down, the Scribes of the Bibliotheca are expected to put it to use. Learning trades, skills, and so on, in logistical roles for the organization.
The Immutable Truth
The Keepers of the Veil have a mission higher than mortal laws - laws that impede their goal of preserving the Veil at all costs may be ignored. Laws that aid it shall be supported. Laws that neither aid nor support the preservation of the Veil shall be worked with when possible, unless circumstances are such that the law hinders preserving the integrity of the Veil.
I. The complete obliteration of the Veil will result in The Conjunction of All Planes.
II. The Conjunction cannot be fully avoided; only understood, and prepared for.
III. The Conjunction will be the destruction of all mundane existence as we understand it.
To join the Keepers of the Veil, one must swear belief in the Immutable Truth as thus presented. The attestation of the Truth must be made before a Chapter Master or The Inheritor, and upon an object or thing or concept of personal significance to the one swearing the oath.
Lands
Where they live, work, and can in general be found.
- The White Tower, with its fires gleaming for miles.
- The Reliquary Castle on the southern shores of the Ashlands.
- The Lodestar Ruins, which still serves as a site of pilgrimage for many.
