Brief History:

The origin of the Curgoths is ancient, the people having known themselves as Curgoths for thousands of years since the first settlements rose along the Alar coast. After the unification of the various clans along the Alar into a petty kingdom under the fabled corsair and warlord Pasuric, the Curgoths conquered up the coast to sack the legendary gold stores at Marana. The wealth of Marana turned Curgotha into a sea-faring empire, establishing colonies as far as Usaea. This golden age continued for hundreds of years, until the advent of the industrial age brought Curgoths out of the fields and crabbing boats and into the inner city.

At the height of the empire, the capital was moved to Marana, known now by the Curgothan name of Merandy. The decline of a power founded on piracy and colonialism lead to revolt, forcing the royal family into exile from a rule of the people. After thirty years of torturous treatment under an incompetent populist government, the Wine Hall Coup returned the royal family to power. This ushered in a new constitution and universal reforms across the country. To this day Curgotha still struggles and looks to reclaim what was lost in the thirty years of suffering, be it by diplomacy or at the end of a bayonet.

Geography:

The Kingdom of Curgotha is an island nation on the far eastern side of Eres, on an island known in the Curgoth language as Alarlund. Although encompassing several smaller islands along the Alar coast, the vast majority of the Curgothan population resides on the mainland. The population centers are almost all coastal, stemming from the country’s history as maritime traders and pirates.

Mainland Curgotha is almost entirely clear-cut everywhere except the interior, a result of heavy deforestation from the shipbuilding industry over thousands of years. Much of the northern country is rocky and mountainous, yet still green thanks to resilient and adaptable plant life that finds purchase in the patches of dirt along the stone coated hills.

The climate of Alarlund is temperate, with heavy rains in the spring but light snow in winter. The average winter temperature is 5°C, rising to 34°C in the summer. The summer heat is well enjoyed by the people of Curgotha, who are never far from the relief of the cold sea.

Economy

Obsessed with maintaining the wealth of the state, Curgotha tends towards an industrial and utilitarian focus and constructs much of the state’s equipment itself rather than importing it. Much of the country’s economy aligns with the maritime and naval industries. Fishing, whaling, crabbing, and transport of both people and goods make up a vast amount of occupations for coastal Curgoths. Most things that could be considered a luxury in Curgotha are foreign made, with a high trade value and social status placed upon imported exotic goods. The international economy is largely based around tourism and transport rather than exports.

Companies:

Reca Curgoty Wabenfabrica: A crown corporation governed by the state, RC Wabenfrabrica is the national manufacturer of local firearms, armed vehicles, and naval artillery for all Curgotha.
Corae Heavy Industries [CHI Marinafabrica]: Based in the historic port city of Corae, CHI is a shipwright that has lasted in various forms for hundreds of years. In its current incarnation, it is a leading manufacturer of freighters and naval logistics craft.
White Sun International: A local company that has since expanded to the world stage, White Sun operates ocean liners that ferry travellers between Eres and Usaea. Although the business entered a decline with the arrival of air travel, state support has kept White Sun in the black.
Maccrauthun Oto Ltd.: ‘Maccer’ automobiles are not known for their comfort or their aesthetic, but for the poor heavy industry labourer or coastal fisherman, you can’t go wrong with low cost and reliability. The company also imports and license builds luxury cars from abroad on behalf of the state.

Trade:

Curgotha’s primary exports include; fish and seafood, motor vehicles, and ships. Curgotha imports oil, refined metal ores, communications equipment, and luxury goods. Exports are not a large part of the country’s economy.

CURGOTHAN AUTHORITIES OCCUPY GADLUND
For the first time since the 1891 Revolution, the Casir has begun to assert his control over the southern islands of Gadlund and Gadrau. Armed officials of the Recy Herapolisa have placed the Gadlunder government under house arrest in their own political compound at Meranthrun. The presence of state officials bearing long guns and armoured cars has proved a controversial but effective method of controlling the local populace, of which many still consider themselves members of the illegitimate People's Republic. At this time, the only reported fatalities have been several members of a militia force acting as an impromptu military of Gadlund, all of whom died in police custody from wounds sustained during their surrender to Curgothan authorities.

The Casir has spoken out to the people of Gadlund to request their compliance with the proper authorities of the Herapolisa until the time that the Gadlunder government's functions can be placed under mainland authority. Efforts are already underway to restore the Royal Family's ancestral home at Meranthrun, which had been transformed into a defensive political compound by the People's Republic and their militia during the Thirty Years of Strife. Prime Minister Alathrun and his office have yet to supply their own comments into the matter at this time.
