The Mixing of the Elements
When a fire elemental spread across a mountain, they recognized one another’s power. Together as kin, they could become something truly new to their world.

Elementals are no foreign concept to the world of Altera, having influenced the world long before the mortals themselves. These primordial beings primarily come in the four types that are known by all; Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. But the world isn’t made of a single element, but rather the many connections that they have with one another. Through the bonding of Kin, it has been known for elementals to become an entirely new type of element, similar yet not the same as what they once were.

Kin is the bond that elementals share with one another, having merged together to carry a single intent behind their decisions. One avatar, many elementals that now act as parts of a new whole. Normally, elementals are known to bond with those of the same type. An earth elemental will bond with another powerful earth, to combine their strength and grow stronger together. But on rare occasions, they instead choose to merge with another type entirely.

One rule stays true; certain types never mix with another, as they are one another’s polar opposites. Fire never merges with Water; for even the youngest child knows how to put out a fire and no water wishes to boil or steam out of existence. Similarly, Air and Earth are known to butt heads and refuse to bond; a nomadic air versus the stuck-in-stone earth. Water and Earth have no recorded cases of a bond, but that is an often debated topic amongst even the most researched scholars.

Most elementals don’t find kin early on, often only finding a bond as they grow in age and power. Once they’ve bonded, over time they often bond with even more elementals and grow in even more power. But, there are cases of elementals bonding with others earlier in their time.

Magma Elementals

============
The combination of Fire and Earth, these elementals form into the most common mix of the elements. An entire land of ash and magma exists within Altera, for fire and earth are a terrifying combo. Fire wishes to keep their place in the world, and Earth needs offense to contribute to its powerful defense.

Magma Elementals are the source of Volcanoes and Lava within Altera. They are uncommonly found within the Ashlands.

Ice Elementals

============
The most common combination of Water and Air, ice elementals manifest in the coldest parts of the world. Throughout the north, ice elementals are more common as they shape the world as powerful storms. Blizzards are the most common, but on rare occasions they can form into hailstorms and devastate the world around them. The higher the tier of an elemental, the larger the hail and the faster the winds.

Ice Elementals are the source of Blizzards and Hailstorms that devastate the northern parts of Altera.

Tropical Elementals

============
A more rare combination of Air and Water, tropical elementals form over the deepest and most intense oceans. Strong storms that are connected with a powerful ocean, they are the cause of many of the most notable tropical storms of the world. Cyclones, Storm Surges, Waterspouts and Maelstroms are all examples of these elementals. Most don't touch land and are less known about, but many sailors can recognize the danger of these storms even from a distance.

Tropical storms occur often over the ocean, but not all of these storms are a tropical elemental. Thunderstorms are manifestations of air elementals, different from the powerful wave-rocking storms listed here.

Smoke Elementals

============
The most well known combination of Air and Fire, Smoke forms as a toxic gale of air. These elementals often carry with them toxic attributes, and are known to make most living beings sick if they inhale them. Not all combinations of air and fire become smoke, if fire is the stronger of the two elements combined they simply become even stronger forms of fire with a higher heat level.

Smoke Elementals are not nearly as nomadic as their cousins of Air, but they do often roam still. They prefer warm climates, the hotter the better. Due to this, they often stay near the Ashlands.

As always, lore found within this thread is not to be used to metagame. Public knowledge on elementals is minimal, but it does exist. Roleplay to the correct level of your character.
