The Tale of Podie & Panny of the Mushroom People

Podie

Villager
Part I: The Kindly Gamesman

Old age had brought a peaceful routine to the aged gamesman's life. Every morning at sunrise, Roland Northman would walk the palace grounds with his best bow slung over his shoulder. Though his arms were no longer strong enough to aim an arrow truly, this humble morning ritual was a matter of pride for the old man, walking the grounds and paying his respects to the forests for the many foods and comforts nature provided for the great realm of Altera.

These days, even the weight of his bow made Roland's old bones ache if he walked for too long without rest. Roland eased himself to the ground under the shade of many tall oak trees draped with curtains of thick vines. Daydreaming of his beloved Emma's hearty mushroom stew, Roland closed his eyes and began to hum the song they danced to on their wedding day. Emma had passed long ago, but he still thought of her plump smiling face every morning on his walk.

Suddenly, the ground beneath Roland began to rumble. The aged gamesman hugged the nearest tree as tightly as he could as the tremors from deep within the earth reverberated through his frail bones. He was too awestruck to cry out as the strangest sounds filled his ears, a wondrous song of chirps and trills. Roland looked around wildly, uncertain if he was in danger. What was he about to encounter in these dense woods--nymphs? Demons? Perhaps even... the gods?

When the rumbling subsided, from the rich earth sprouted two rather large toadstool mushrooms with caps the size of saucers. Roland rubbed at his eyes again and again as he saw that these mushrooms had large round black eyes and mouths shaped into perfect circles as they continued to chirp their bizarre song. Inside their mouths were pink flashes of tiny tongues but not a tooth in sight.

"By bacon, what creatures are you?" Roland whispered. The mushroom creatures did not reply, but stopped their singing. They looked to one another, then turned their heads to Roland, blinking at him slowly with their shining button eyes. Chirping, they wriggled out from the earth even further, revealing little spongy white arms and legs. Their hands were much like a human babe's, but their feet were webbed like a duck's.

The mushroom creatures waddled to Roland with surprising speed and before the gamesman could react, they clambered up his legs, gripping his clothes for support and eventually climbed their way to his shoulders, one mushroom on each. There they sat, speaking to one another in their indecipherable language--or possibly to Roland, it was difficult to tell.
