Wishbone's Application [Accepted - Shao]

Villager
The Whitelist Application Form:

About You!

1. What is your Minecraft username?

Wishbone_

2. How old are you?

20 years old.

3. What country are you from?

United States.

4. Have you read the King's Law, Code of Conducts, Official Lore, and the Player Guides yet?

I have!

5. In your own words, how would you define metagaming and powergaming?

Metagaming would be like playing outside the game - not keeping what I know and what my character knows separate, and using knowledge I have to aid my character in ways that might be unfair.

Powergaming would be playing as though my character were all-powerful, overpowered, unreasonably highly skilled, or otherwise. Kind of like a Mary Sue in writing.

6. Do we allow X-Raying mods or X-Ray texture packs on the server?

Nope.

7. Name one of our current Mentors.

Niko.

8. Tell us about yourself!

I consider myself to be a pretty laid-back person - I enjoy quieter activities like reading, writing, and playing video games - but also enjoy getting out with friends and looking for new stories to tell. My favorite subjects in high school and college were history and the humanities, and it's knowledge in these areas that I like to draw on in my writing - there's nothing I love more than fantasy or alternate history stories that could be believable from the quality of the work.

9. Do you have any examples of your work?

I don't unfortunately - I've only ever written for myself on pen and paper.

10. Did anyone refer you? If not, how did you find our server?

No referral, I found this server browsing Google.

About Your Character!
This section is about the character you intend to use once you join the server. We ask that new players follow these guidelines during this portion of the application:
  • Characters begin with basic skills and gear. No advanced armor or weaponry. Skills and abilities are appropriate to a novice level. Skills should be learned through roleplay, not through backstory.
  • Characters fit the lore. If you choose to play as a Moor Elf, for example, we expect appearance and details to be fitting with base lore.
  • Characters cannot use magic in any way. The test itself should not mention magic either. HollowWorld uses a restricted magic system and it is only accessible to those who find and learn from a teacher in-game.
  • Tests should not be violent. No murder, killing, death, torture. In the past, 8 out of 10 applications featured characters fighting off bandits or slaying passersby. We don't want to see how well you can script a fight scene. We want to see how well you can tell a story, how well you can roleplay.
  • Be creative and be original. Do not use tests/characters whose home villages were burned, parents murdered, and then set off to be an orphan assassin. It has been done before. Please don't do it again.
  • Written portion of the test is required to be a 400 word minimum. If the test doesn't meet the minimum, Staff may ask you to extend the test before the application is considered.
You can remove the guidelines above when you're copy and pasting the application. The instructions above are for you to read and can be removed when applying.

Written Test!

Tiernan could hardly contain his excitement. Someone finally had need of his services!

He had been dreaming for months of finally leaving behind the farm that he was trapped on with his mother and siblings, travelling the world as a courier, meeting exotic people and getting lost in faraway fantastic places...

Taking a letter for the neighbor's wife to her mother's house a few days walk south would serve as an excellent start for the burgeoning entrepreneur. Soon everyone would know the name of Tiernan O'Rourke and the Sun & Moon Couriers!

Tiernan exchanged promises of good behavior and safety with tearful farewells from his mother and older sisters and set off into the sunrise, pack on his back and determination behind his every stride. It wouldn't do for his first ever delivery to be a late one - after all, he didn't even have a reputation to uphold yet! With the morning cool, the breeze soft, and nary a cloud in the sky, Tiernan was filled with confidence in the trek that awaited him and conviction that this was the beginning of a long and storied career as the greatest courier in history.

This confidence and conviction was barely shaken when the clouds started rolling in from the north a few hours later. Nor did Tiernan falter when the rain began to pelt down from the sky like the tears of some great beast living among the clouds. Sworn in his mind to uphold his duty as the reliable and utterly dependable deliveryman he was paid to be, he trudged on down the muddy path through the farmlands for what felt to him like a lifetime. Nothing would delay the delivery, he had made a promise. Finally, the path led him to a stand of old trees at the top of one of many hills in the area. Branches reaching down like the arms of leafy saints, he reasoned that it couldn't hurt to stop for a few hours and take shelter from the torrential downpour under the old oaks on the hill. Tiernan sat beneath the largest of the trees, and rested his legs from the hours of walking he had done in the unending rain. He hoped for the rain to clear soon so he could get a fire going but found no such luck, soon drifting off to the beat of raindrops hitting the leaves high above him.

Tiernan opened his eyes drowsily in response to the sun's warmth bringing life to his waterlogged body. He sat up and stretched from his position among the tree roots and reached for his bag to begin making a fast breakfast.

Air. Void filled his futile grasp. Tiernan's eyes shot fully open, his hands rummaging the space around him, frantically searching for the leather pack containing his worldly possessions, his food for the trip and most importantly --

The letter! His worst fear had come to pass and his dreams of grandeur and renown from the day before came crashing down to earth around him. No letter, no pay, no recognition, no career away from home and the farm he found so dull. He couldn't afford to lose that cursed piece of parchment - it was his golden ticket away from the dreary life that awaited him should he fail in his task, so he thought, and losing it simply wasn't an option. Several minutes passed as he searched and re-searched the space around the tree, though his efforts came to nothing. No pack. Would he be forced to return home in his damp, hungry, letter-less shame? Never! Indignation at the thoughts of the patronizing voices of his fellow townsman gave him new strength. Whether stolen or washed away in the rain the night before, his belongings couldn't have gotten far - the journey had to go on.

It was then he spotted the small set of footprints leading to his resting place at the tree, far smaller than his own. A child? One of the halflings he had heard about in stories from the merchants? Unidentifiable to his inexperienced eyes, it didn't matter, he had a lead. For an hour he followed the trail of footprints, through the trees and down the hill into a larger forest below. Eyes glued to the ground, he was convinced that the thief couldn't have gotten far. And then he saw it. The pack! Hanging from a low branch with contents strewn on the ground, food devoured with remains crushed into the forest floor, and his maps and logo designs scattered about, Tiernan only had thought for finding the letter. And there it was, stuck between the leaves on the branch next to the pack's. Package restored to his possession and safely stowed in his damp trousers, Tiernan turned his attention to gathering up what was left of his things and storing them in his battered pack.

Tiernan was a courier to be sure, and he would get the job done one way or another, comfortably and safely or no. And off he went again, heading back onto the path that would take him towards his dreams, so he believed. He had no means or intention of finding the culprit behind his inconvenience, for if he had, the truth may have very well turned him away from his self-proclaimed destiny for good.

The shame of being nearly bested by several hungry rodents would have likely been too much for the young man.

Current Setting of the Server:

The lands of Altera have long been laced with upheaval, supernatural turmoil that would threaten to shatter the realm or tear it asunder. Long, have the peoples of Altera withstood these tribulations, overcoming and persevering through the generations. Only too recently, the realm tangled with the Behemoth Qlippoth, awakened by monsoon rains and with which came the Ashen Blight plague and eldritch abominations. Though the days were dark and long, the realm did survive, through its tenacity and reverence. The memories of the trials behind them still fresh, the realm sits in a state of unease and angst . . . with eyes on the horizon.

In the skies above, the heavens fall and burn across the auburn colors of the setting sun, streaks of color in the gathering dark. The Realm of Altera awaits . . .
