Backstory:
Farworld, Rightasyte Peak
It was a cold night in Rivehussen, and a chilly wind blew through the village within the walls of my estate, there was a slight rain. I looked out the window in the council room, overlooking Rivehussen. Rightasyte Peak was the perfect place to house my operation, few knew of the catacombs that lay beneath the property, and I could see the whole of the town below. Looking out, I thought about years to come, and the achievements I had made with the help of my fellow colleagues, even though we had to work in secret. I thought about the many gruesome experiments we had carried out in the name of progress. I thought about the ancient relics we has stolen from the catacombs and the altars to false gods. I thought about how far I had come, and thinking about all this, I knew I would make a difference to the direction the future was going. Right here in Rivehussen. I turned my attention back to the council and listened to the current speaker, Dr. Enders. He talked to the group about spread of rumors concerning our work and how some astronomer was trying to discredit us on those grounds. He droned on about how me must stop all leaks of information, but I was preoccupied. I thought about the stone athame we had found, engraved in some backwards, cryptic language. I thought about a strange silver mask, in the shape of a some sort of bird face. I thought about various other relics found too, my mind was simply elsewhere. Lightning flashed and I was jarred back to reality with the sound of heavy rain. The council was missing a few members from their seats, and someone else was talking. We adjourned the meeting, most of us separated to take care of various task within the large house. Enders and I ventured down into the catacombs with four others to begin an autopsy on one of the subjects. The house was built on top of an entry point to a large complex of catacombs , and inside the entrance was concealed. My mind was now focused on the job at hand, as we walked without talk down the stone stairs. We spent near two hours on the man, his repulsive scream eventually stopping, they continued to echo through the blood soaked halls for some time. It was then, did we notice the thin smoak collecting at the top of the ceiling. I pulled off my bloody gloves and threw down my scalpel and dashed for the stairs. Enders and the other four men followed me up the stairs and into the blaze of burning light. The house was on fire. At the state of it, I was surprised it was still standing. I screamed orders for the four to find the others, and get the archive books, and I yelled at Enders to collect the relics he could. They looked at me with disbelief, I wanted them to stay in a burning house. I screamed commands once more and they moved off, one man falling through the floor to his death is ten paces. Satisfied I moved as fast as I could, trying to stay low. Something exploded behind me as a roof collapsed. I heard the screams of two men burning to death in one of the rooms of in the distance. Almost passing out, I made it to the yard where I was able to see the entirety of the burning home. Standing at a safe distance, I waited to see if anyone would live from the flames, as I found no one outside or in the village. Standing there, watching my life burn away, I suddenly realized what was to happen all too soon. Rivehussen would waste no time tying up loose ends. That town wanted me gone, they all suspect what I do, and they would kill me and never think twice about it, who’s to say I didn’t die in that fire? Some idiot townsman probably started the fire to begin with. I needed to disappear, and make them think it had worked. Rudshore. At first light I quickly made for the small boomtown of Rudshore to bribe my way onto a boat to sail to a new land, maybe Bellemont, if it was far enough. As I looked back at Rightasyte for the last time, I was able to see people making the climb to see the damage done, and possibly to look for survivors. I felt so lost, heading for Rudshore... all I could think of was how wrong I was. I would have never thought this could happen, and because of that, I was foolish. Now I was on my way to the cutthroat, assassin filled, port town of Rudshore, about to try to start over. I hoped that I would make it far enough to get that chance.
Unknown DateFarworld, Rivehussen
Rivehussen was a small city, landlocked with no waterport save it’s close neighbor, Rudshore. Rightasyte was elevated above Rivehussen and was difficult to access, and was seldom visited by anyone. Built upon it was Dr. Mandovi’s estate, and private village. Dr. Mandovi was a young, and ambitious philosopher and physician respected from afar by others of similar mind do to the content published and progress made by his council at Rightasyte Peak. Rightasyte Peak was a unanimously dreaded place by the citizens of Rivehussen, for most had been hearing the same dreadful rumor for the past couple decades. Most people believed that Dr. Mandovi was a mad man, murdering people in disgusting rituals or cutting people up is gruesome medical experiments. People demanded that he be tried with the respects of various crimes, but the city council either ignored or was not bold enough to try to question the renowned doctor.
However it happened, be it angry villager who just wanted the doctor gone, or perhaps it was a payed for operation, the Mandovi Estate on Rightasyte burnt to the ground one faithful night, with no documented survivors. No one knows where the fire started, or how, but there was nothing remained but the ashes of work so many souls were sacrificed to achieve. In reality, the rumors were all mostly true, the Mandovi Estate was soaked with blood. His whole council had the blood of near countless men on their hands, and that night they all perished in flame. All but one...
The official City Archives of Rivehussen reports an incident concerning the death of Dr. Mandovi and his medical council of 30, though these events are incomplete and poorly documented due to the nature of the events. No investigation was pursued to find the cause of the fire that destroyed the property and killed the people in reference.
