Fan-Fic Creatures of Myth and Legend

Anithola

Lord of Altera
I realized this was a much more logical place for this to
be
posted, so I took the liberty to move it myself. Sadly this
includes all your comments and ratings disappearing, but I'm sure
we can live with that.

There have been many slow days at work recently, and I need something
to do. Thus I created this thread. On here I will write about different
mythical creatures that could be lurking the wilderness of Altera right now!

Keep in mind this is in no way official lore, and simply fan fiction, so
dont go calling the lore police on me. IF however, either the staff team
or owners of regions etc would like to add some of the creatures to their
folklore, id have no problem with that.

Id like to apologize in advance for any typos. They will most likely be frequent
considering all entries will be from my phone.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Nukk
For hundreds of years, mothers have told their children stories about this evasive
creature. Prowling in shallow freshwater and rivers, this creature is said to hunt
primarily children who swim too far from shore. With its long claws, and tangled
filthy hair it is a thing of nightmares. Others believe it does not kill at all, and that
it is simply a bad omen, often spotted where children have drowned, never to be
seen again. One thing is certain. Children never strayed far from the riverbank
after hearing tales of the Nukk.

Territory:
Any body of freshwater. The tales of the Nukk are most commonly
told in the riverlands surrounding the Crossroads, Tambry, and Thiil.

Moral: Dont swim into deep water.

The Naebabin [Horgaahn]
Far beneath the surface, in the deepest holes and caverns of Altera, a mysterious
creature is said to have dwelled. With fangs long as daggers, and wings the size
of a halfling, this bat like creature would ambush oblivious dwarves in their deepest
mineshafts. They are supposedly extinct, although some of Altera's oldest dwarves
claim they can still remember finding lifeless brothers in the mines, completely
drained of blood. Myth or not, bringing some extra torches with you is rarely a bad idea.

Territory:
Only the dwarves have actually claimed to encounter this creature in their
deepest mines. It is however very possible that the Naebabin can be
found anywhere, as long as you dig deep enough.

Moral: Dont mess with the Naebabin.

The King's Quail
Although most ancient myths house terrible beasts and dreadful monstrosities,
this is not always the case. A well known fairytale in some of Altera's
northernmost regions depict a king about to wed away his only daughter.
For the feast he requested that only the finest fowl in the land be served,
and thus, a grand hunt was set in motion. After many hardships, the tale's
protagonist stumbled upon a golden quail, and instead of killing it, captured
it to bring as a gift. Although the quail pleaded and begged to be spared, the
king had no patience for its beauty, and promptly had it killed. When most
of the hunters had returned, and the king was satisfied, the greatest wedding
Altera had ever seen commenced. The kings daughter, the bride, was the first
to taste of the golden quail, and died promptly after getting a quail's bone stuck
in her throat. Stricken with grief, the king ordered the golden quail protected, and
any man who took even one of its feathers would be executed.

Many consider the King's Quail an omen of luck, and good things to come,
granted of course, you do not kill it. It is also a very popular motive for items like
belt buckles, buttons, and stained glass. In this age and time, very few consider it
any more than a story. Although hunters will often brag about having a quick
glimpse of it before it vanishing into the underbrush.

Territory:
The forests and mountain ranges from Wolfstadt to Queen's
port. The snowy areas around Winterhold and Aeroch Nor
also have a very similar tale, although here it is the king who
chokes on a bone, and the bird is a silvery snow owl.

Moral: Dont be greedy, appreciate the worlds beauty.

The Relgrim
The natural hunters of Altera deploy an array of methods to catch prey.
The cougar plans an ambush from the bushes, the eagle snatches its meal
with incredible speed, and the wolf wears its prey down through sheer
endurance. None of these apply for the Relgrim.

All but invisible to the eye, the Relgrim prowls the ports and shantytowns
of Altera, waiting for an unsuspecting sailer or peasant to peer down
into the water. For the Relgrim has the power to alter its reflection.
Preying on the uncertain and vulnerable, it captivates the subject with
terrible images of themselves, exposing their worst fears. Without realizing,
the heartbroken salty sailor is already falling headfirst into the calm water, the
reflection of an old, lonely man dancing on the surface.

Some say the Relgrim is the ocean itself, others believe its simply our
fears and uncertainties playing a trick on our minds. Either way, I would
not peer into your reflection too long, light can be deceiving.

Territory:
Any body of saltwater. The Relgrim is often associated with drowned
sailers, and so its tales are most common in busy ports and places
otherwise connected to the ocean.

Moral: Dont be too self absorbed.

The Tolnos Fish [Mokyra]
Originally described by the Moor Elves, the Tolnos was a particular
species of freshwater fish deemed ridiculously easy to catch, and full
of valuable nutrition. This source of food alone is said to have granted
prosperity to the moor elves over a rather extended period of time.
However nothing lasts forever, and the elves soon found they had harvested
the Tolnos to the point where the entire species was on the brink of extinction.
Sadly, it was too late, and natural competition eventually forced the Tolnos
out of the ecosystem entirely.

Hundreds of years later the fish lives on through sayings,
shanties, and fisherman's tales. For an example a particularly gullible or clumsy
person could be called a Tolnos, or after a good meal a dinnerguest could be heard
saying "Some Tolnos and we'd have it all".

Then again, Altera is vast and wild. Perhaps deep in the forest, in a lake hidden
by a shroud of overgrowth, the Tolnos are still splashing about.

Territory:
Exclusively freshwater lakes where natural enemies were easily avoidable.

Moral: Preserve what you have. If you're not careful you could lose it forever.

The Pixies (By @Sankera)
Tales from the past tell of these tiny beigns, they seem friendly and alluring at first
but they usually have far more sinester intensions. They're known for luring away
young children who are rebelious and never want to grow up, using tricks and wordplay
the children are taken away. No one has ever really seen them, except for the children
who were taken away, but they are rumoured to emit a soothing light, having
the size of a teenage boys hand and might even have wings.

After many children were taken away people locked all their doors and windows
at night to fend of the pixies. But after many years of nothing happening people
let down their worries and defences and stopped locking everything

Who knows when the next child is taken away

Territory:
They usualy fly around cities who are connected to the ocean during a full moon

Moral: Protect your children and teach them that growing up is normal
