Horgaahn is an ancient language. From a time that many words that we now use did not yet exist. That's the main point.
So while normally older languages become more complex with more words, these were just basic words related to Dwarven underground life. Because as soon as the Dwarves went above ground for a long period of time, they ran into humans and Elves and learnt the common tongue that was/is much easier to use and learn. Which is why Horgaahn is not widely used anymore.
Horgaahn is based on tough sounds: Rolling rocks, the sound of a voice after drinking to much whisky, the sounds of miners far away in a shaft, the echoes of pickaxes on rocks. It's also based a bit on Scandinavian sounds, but we make sure not to make it sound too much like German or Norwegian for instance.
Fun Fact: I pretty much try to remember how that old treebeard from LOTR sounded like. he had the same rolling rocks sound in his voice.
Most of the words in Horgaahn start with the same letter as the English word. Use the first letter and you'll be remembering it very easy.
Fun Fact: sometimes it differs quite a lot from the english though, but that is not a problem. This also gives variance in the language.
Horgaahn - Literally: Tongue of the Dwarves (the name for the dwarven language)
Dwarves of Auld did not know future or past, they lived in the 'now'. So verbs like "rising"/"using" are translated in to the same word as "rise"/"used". there is one tense, and no other.
Fun Fact: This is confusing sometimes, but makes it a lot easier to speak horgaahn in game. This way you only have to know the verb and you already know all the tenses, because there is just one: The now.
Combined words like, "forge-master", are combined in a similar way as in the english, but without the "-". So Forge-Master, will be: Hurrlar.
Age - as in storage - translates to: "ém". So storage, will be: "Kaém". (You can think of more rules like this, for instance 'ly' in lovely, magicly, etc.)
Words like "armory" or "library" translates to a literal meaning: "weaponhouse" and "bookroom", so the Horgaahn for those will be Waermanion and Tahkulrûm. "Barracks" will be "fighting-house": "Bárruzmenion"
Fun fact: This way you can easily make your own word in rp without checking the dictionary. For instance you want to say 'palace' and you already know the words 'royal' and 'house'.
Horgaahn is an ancient language, so there weren't as many different words for one meaning. Like castle, fortress, base, outpost. They all mean similarly the same, so they translate to one word in Horgaahn: Rimtar.
Fun fact: We now have a lot of words for things that the dwarves of the times that horgaahn was spoken did not know about. They mostly lived underground, so the word for eagle will not be different than that for sparrow. It's both just a bird. So synonyms or words for stuff that happened above surface they will mostly have generalized
To use a form in denial, add 'not'. So 'cannot' in Horgaahn: "Curnae" (Nae = not)
You can see most of the rules in Horgaahn is to make it easier for the ones who have to speak it and who have to think of Horgaahn words. With enough rping you go very fast in learning the words. I remember Freyadavis and I used to talk horgaahn without checking the dictionary at all. If you have a word that is not yet in it, try and find a synonym for this word, and see if you can translate it to Horgaahn in this way. For instance: To capture - to close in - closed = clud.
