It's because the gen was released at a bad time. The kids who grew up with Red/Blue saw the third gen during their phase of "Oh Pokemon is stupid, look at the derpy designs (spinda and friends)" and they got back into Diamond/Pearl.

But Diamond and Pearl were easily the worst Pokémon games since ever. The only good thing that came out of Gen 4 was the physical/special split.
