Back story:
Marcus was born in a land, kilometres away from Altera, named Taiklaviti. Taiklaviti is the name of the country spanning acre after acre of land, engulfing many different biomes and effectively covering almost the entire latitude of the Northern Hemisphere.
The country is blanketed by small villages, usually consisting of three to ten houses and a small community. It lacked a unified government and an official capital city.
Although dressed appropriately and behaving like civilized people, the people of Taiklaviti usually act barbaric and hostile to those outside their community, unless they´ve set up a trade or an alliance with another. But they were generally peaceful, not invading others and respecting their own property.
Though, over the past few decades, many more civilized travellers have stumbled upon Taiklaviti, and brought along their sense on unity and civilization with them. Some communities invite these travellers in with them, usually because they´ve been taught to by previous travellers. Meanwhile, other communities push these travellers away, sticking with their old traditions.
As this continues, a set of four villages relatively close to each other decide to join together and create the first unified communities. Since only a forest separated the four communities, they worked together and chopped down the entire forest. As more heard of this unified community, it became a destination where those who believed in unity, as well as outsiders, were welcomed. And in the matter of two decades, they had built a massive city out of the hallowed forest, and named it Taiklaviti Alpha.
Those communities that had wanted unity throughout the land decided to assimilate with Alpha, setting up safe trade routes and protection when needed.
While other communities wanted to be unified, but also didn´t want to be assimilated into this new township that was mainly composed of outsiders, chose to cut off support to any community with ties to Alpha. And with that, they set up trades and services to neighbouring towns who supported what they believe.
And then there were the other communities that still wanted to believe the old tradition of only trusting those in your community.
As more and more foreigners flooded into the city, diseases from other lands began to strike at everybody. First, the outsider placed the plague on those in the city, and then those would seek to make trade with the communities that don´t support Alpha. This caused a massive amount of draught, famine, and lost profit. The city quarantined itself to disallow anymore plague to enter, thus forcing outsiders to go to the many other communities that either supported or didn´t, the city.
Eventually, the plague had ended, and the city was reopened. Those who still believed in the old tradition took this as an act of violence against the people of Taiklaviti from the outsiders. They believed that this was only the beginning, and that they would be the downfall of the land. And so, even though the outsiders hadn´t disturbed those who believed the old tradition, any community who found an outsider would kill them immediately. Any community that believed the old tradition was labelled Old Orders (because it was believed that orders to never trust anyone else outside your community came from the gods). Eventually, Old Order communities began secretly invading communities that held outsiders, and killing them. Taiklaviti Alpha immediately took this as an act of war against its people, while those who didn´t support Alpha but supported unity (now called Equinox communities) took it as an act of mass assassination, which didn´t entitle them to do any act against a community unless they were caught in the act of trespassing with the intent to kill.
Thought of civil war erupted, because Alpha believed that outsiders were the reason Taiklaviti was fluctuating recently, which it wasn´t. While the Old Order communities believed that outsiders would be the downfall of Taiklaviti, and all that would remain are outsiders. They also thought that Taiklaviti was in its prime time when all the communities were separate from each other. And the unified Equinox communities believed that the populace would benefit the most if everybody were to synthesize and not become one community, but a least be allied with one another, like how the whole of Equinox is.
And then there were those people who, with the threat of civil war, withdrew from their beliefs and became neutral.
So the populace was split up like this:
20% are in or supported Taiklaviti Alpha (note that 8% of that is outsiders)
30% are Equinox communities (5% are outsiders)
40% are Old Order communities (split up, so there isn´t really much ally or support from eachother)
10% are neutral
The threat of civil war was still there, but it had yet to have erupted...

Marcus was born 20 years before the time stated above. He lived in a relatively large village, almost a small city. His parents owned a lot of the business there, including a goat farm. That´s how Marcus got his nickname of Goat. At the age of 4, Marcus´ Father died of illness at the age of 30. Leaving the family business to Marcus´ two older brothers, he and his Mother travelled to the still growing Taiklaviti Alpha, to look for new opportunities to increase their profits back home. They were given that opportunity. Marcus´ Mother found a profession working at a very popular tavern in one of the higher districts after the owner retired. The owner had yet to have found a buyer, but fortunately Marcus´ Mother had the money to pay for it. So she remained a wealthy tavern owner. Life continued as it was until at the age of 14, Marcus returned to his village, for nostalgia purposes. When he returned he was created with news that the village was getting more visitors recently, so its overall income increased. However, this also made it a bigger target for bandits, resulting in over 50 over the past ten years. Even though none of them have succeeded, they were cutting costs due to having to arm and pay for guards, as well as casualties. While Marcus was digging around his Dad´s old workshop, he came across a device that would spring up and explode if a person stepped across a a tripwire that could span for a kilometre. Marcus knew that his Father secretly worked with redstone in his spare time, creating sketches and prototypes for automatons he never actually got to use. Marcus inherited the knowledge of redstone from his Father, and with the help of the citizens, created a series of eight of these defence around the immediate perimeter of the town. This eliminated the need for guards, as they were easily replaceable and almost undetectable.
Marcus continued working with redstone for the next 12 years, making many different machines. Some were used for defence, others just to make lives easier. Either way, he turned the small city into a impenetrable fortress. However, he got cocky, and resorted to only using the machines for defence, so if they failed the entire city was doomed.
One day, he was commissioned by Taiklaviti Alpha to use his defence models and work alongside a bunch of other engineers commissioned around the land to make a massive shield of automated defence around the fully built city. To help it in case civil war actually broke out.
Marcus worked for two months, and when he came back to his city, he found his automatons in ruins, already used, and the small city in flames and occupied by bandits. As he moved closer to the city, one of the damaged dispensers that was suppose to shoot arrows still was loosely active. It shot out, carrying a load of redstone dust on the tip and skimmed Marcus´ arm, causing a large gash and redstone leaking into his body. He ran into town, fortunately avoiding the bandits and managed to escape to his family home. There he found a health mixture, and without thinking applied it to his arm, sealing the redstone in his bloodstream forever. Not finding his two brother anywhere, he slipped out of town.
With his brothers missing and Taiklaviti Alpha not letting anybody in, in fear of the Old Order, he was forced to take a ship to Altera, to start a new beginning.
