Myn Myrthar Bjar

So this 'ere beastie be a slightly adapted (and shortened!) version of the 18th century sea shanty "My Jolly Sailor Bold" which appears in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Except, uh. It's in the anglicised version of Old Norvægen that I'm writing. Pronunciation not likely to be as you expect - this thing's a monster.

Oops...

Endag in esmarmorgunn,
Yr straithed otr knar
Dun cæ þe Myrneth djoken,
Hver yr syg en myrthar bjar,

Hir tald otr en avlass,
Hvur syraved in harm,
Har said "Olvar afrig yr þad
þor willst namar ratharn."

Myn lært aith an erd stryked,
Yr løttig guld end silvar
Væll nen canneth myk suthen
Adr myn myrthar bjar.

Needs more Old Norse.

Ár var alda
þar er Ymir bygði
vara sandr né sær
né svalar unnir,
jord fannsk æva
né upphiminn,
gap var ginnunga
en gras hvergi.

That's in the meter of ancient words. Then there's the meter of speeches:

Hlaðnir oru holða
ok hvitra skjalda
vigra vestroenna
ok valskra sverða;
grenjuðu berserkir,
guðr var þeim á sinnum
emjuðu ulfheðnar
ok isorn dúðu.

There's lots of very fun meters in Norse, but one of my favourites is galdralag, or the meter of magic spells.

Hverr of kom Heráss á
hí á land gotna?
Fiskr ór fjanda vim svimandi,
fogl á fjanda lið galandi.
