It is the commonly held belief he was lieing. Even the writers hinted at this during a press screening. We may never know the truth.

Yes, what annoyed me is that he actually might have lied. Also, the plot from the beginning where Sherlock went off to a Scandinavian country (can't remember which) to finish off some of Moriarty's lot was left open from what I can remember.

I haven't seen the second and third episodes but I saw the first two seasons plus the first episode. Now we get another hiatus....
