Introduction - Concerning Silverton

Long ago, there was a small, resolute yet bustling and thriving town out in the wilderness. Leagues upon leagues from the land of Altera and the Northern Kingdoms. It was free from war and violence so distant that not even the most determined criminal would ever manage to set foot inside the town. This town was Silverton. Silverton however other than its location seemed like a fairly normal town. Traders traded, millers milled and every evening ale dtinkers would go to the in or mothers would tuck in their children and so life went on peacefully. One day however in a small cottage in a small grove on the eastern side of town someone was born. Someone who would one day leave this town and set foot in the grand gate of Port Silver. This small innocent child was Arthur Stonebrook.

As many years passed Arthur grew and grew and so did his love and knowledge of the world. Until finally our story begins.

Chapter 1 - Arthur Stonebrook

Arthur Stonebrook was a youthful boy on the cusp of manhood. Arthur was fairly average in height, and had very fair brown hair and glistening brown eyes. He wore a woollen jumper which was a gleaming white and over it he wore a modest brown overcoat that stretched from shoulder to kneecap while wearing a rather somber grey pair of leg garments which fit him perfectly. Arthur was never a skilled swordsman nor was he ever bestowed with great athleticism. His only skills were with a bow and with his mind. He was of great knowledge, so were his family. In the small remote town his family were neither rich nor poor but they had set up a utopia in their small home. Full of ingenious solutions to the problems of the day for the Stonebrooks were always great innovators. If there was one thing however that Arthur loved more than any other, it was nature. He always walked the woods and climbed the mountains or swam in lakes and climbed the trees. Arthur was one with nature and nature was one with Arthur. So the days went by without a care in the world, the sun gleamed a glorious gold in the summer and the ground was a stunning and gleaming blanket of white in the winter. Ah yes those were the days.

Chapter 2 - A Night In November

Twas a normal night in the town of Silverton. Arthur was about 20 paces or so from the entrance to Silverton as he had been out in the forests feeding the wildlife. There seemed noting abnormal at all that evening. No danger of death or destruction nor any worry of impending attack. Arthur was now now more than 15 paces from the gate, still no sign of any abnormalities. The air was quiet and undisturbed but for the cheerful laments of the ale drinkers at the inn and the occasional creek of the mill. Arthur unfazed was now 10 paces from the gate. This time however an ambience emanated from afar. It was somewhat of a strange blur of low, dark and somewhat eerie tones. It came from the mountains away into the west. It was a haunting sound along with it came an aroma, one that smelled so peculiar, it was neither pleasant nor unbearable. Arthur pondered this and thought to himself "I must venture up there one day, I must" . Those snow capped giants that loomed high over the town. They seemed so inviting to Arthur, so desperate to be explored. Arthur carried on for the evening though. He headed home to his cottage where his family were. His mother and father just preparing dinner. The family sat down around the table and talked. Arthur remained silent, away in his own world encapsulated and mesmerised by the mountains and their strange ways. They almost seemed to lure Arthur in.

Much more to come.

Chapter 3 - A Cold Winters Morn

Silverton awoke to a white paradise. The world around the townsfolk draped in a glistening white blanket of snow. It was almost like nature putting on a wedding dress and sharing it with the world. In the Stonebrook cottage however Arthur was absent. He had already thrown off his bed covers and pulled on his clothes and overcoat and head out into the abis. This however was of no shock to Arthurs family. He was often out in the morning enjoying the treats of nature and the many inhabitants of the world that shared his love of the suns first light. Arthur was well outwith the safe haven inside the walls of Silverton however, he was speedily approaching the foot of the nearest mountain. A small brown speck pale in comparison to the great white, cloud searing collossus. Unaware of any dangers that may or may not lie ahead. He had a calm walk across a flat plain beneath a pale blue sky that was snow dusted grassland, it was very easy going for Arthur but this was to prove to be the calm before the storm

Chapter 4 - The First Climb

Arthur now began to climb up higher into the snowy vastness. On his left he could see more and more mountains as he scythed his way up to the summit. The terrain was harsh but not rocky. It was an intensley steep climb which was becoming gruelling for the young man. The mountain seemed to Arthur to be towering with every step he took it just kept on growing. Arthur payed a glance to his right to see a small brown blur with one or two small plumes of smoke rising from it with a backdrop of a snow-tipped pine forest which glinted in the sunshine. So Arthur carried on despite how remote he was Silverton had now passed beyond view and so had the pine forest. The mountains now dominating the view all around. The white peaks seemed endless almost like an endless field of great searing peaks. Arthur continued without a hint of worry and life in Silverton went on without a single thought of where Arthur Stonebrook may be. Arthur continued to climb and climb and so the ascent began to level out and so he reched the summit. Twas fairly flat and not very grand. The view all around of a desolute vastness. An incredible draping of untrodden snow across a vastly mountainous landscape. The view however was not to last as Arthur began his descent.

Chapter 5 - The Fog

Arthur began to traverse the steep, treaturous and haunted slope of the mountain. He trudged on still with little concern for anything but himself. No signs of Kilrox's work or any other form of mischief.

The fog slowly crept in from above as Arthur went down the side of the great rock. As he walked the path became disturbingly uneasy. Arthur could see rocks so jagged they could be mistaken for giant knifes pertruding out of the ground. As he walked there was a small carving in the rocks. It read "Beware evil lurks in these mou..." Arther now understood the gravity of his situation. He turned around and realised he had to get back to Silverton. The fog intensified so much that all was invisible but for 2 paces in front of Arthur. He was stuck helplessly in an isolated and haunted wilderness. A cold wind began to sweep throught the air. Taking with it all the eerieness and darkness that inhabited these mountains and depositing it next to Arthur. He looked around and began to have a rush of sheer panic. His eyes wide open staring, waiting in wonder and fear. Fear of the fog, fear of the mountain, fear of death. His fists clanched, he frantically looked around and realised that he may never see Silverton again, he was completely lost. He began to run in any direction possible the fear that spread throughout his body was beginning to take him. The light snow was now turning into a blizzard. It choked the ground like a snake strangling it prey. Arthur was now no longer in the widerness. He was in a death trap. Shadows began to appear infront of Arthur, vaguely in the fog. There were strange shapes, noies that were synonymous with pain. The sound of vultures then wept through the sky, footsteps could be heard within no more than 10 paces of Arthur. The shadows grew even more deathly and terror infusing. The young boy kept up his pace nonetheless as the snow thickened deeper and deeper.

Chapter 6 - A Final Ascent

Arthur now found himself sinking deeper and deeper into the darkness. The world around him nothing but a terrifying murky white wilderness and his clothes started to become worryingly cold. Arhur's future began to look as bleak as the fog that surrounded him as he continued on into the cold.

Soon enough the ground began to slope up once more as a rumble of thunder wailed through the ever darkwning sky. Snow began to smash into to the ground rather than falling adn the fog now seemed even worse than ever as it shrouded every single thing in sight. Even Arthur's feet had now become invisible to his eyes. Even an outstreched arm was out of plain view. As the ground ascended the path became harsh once more the menace this time being ice. With every step he took his foot slipped back and soon he started to fall, the chance of tumbling grew with every step.

Arthur was then faced with another almighty task, before him stood a herculean slab of rock. Thousands of feet high, there were several gullies which looked promising but the task judging how to climb was intensified with the low visibility but nnetheless Arthur climbed. Shadows began to reappear on either side of the gully in the fog. They seemed to harass Arthur almost teasing him, luring him into his doom. As the young man climbed rocks began to slide underfoot and trickled down the mountain. He climbed over a steep boulder which seemed ever so sturdy but as his foot left the rock it loosened and fell. It gave out a terrifyingly long tumbling sound before landing below with an echoing thudder.

The landscape did not level like last time, it continued to slope steeper and steeper before it finally seemed to stop. Almost as if it were the end of the world. This was the summit. A frozen, barren, winter wasteland

Chapter 7 - The Barren Frozen Wilderness

The blizzard was worsening and the cold was becoming deathly atop the mountain. Arthur faced a herculean task of staying alive. The world he knew was becoming ever more distant with every drop of snow that was smashing into the ground. The snow was thickening and the hours of light were dwindling. Arthur was lost in a treacherous white mayhem and had little hope of escape. The cold dark night would soon set in upon him.

Back at Silverton. Arthurs family was now beginning to worry. Arthur usually returned not two hours afore dusk and yet that time had come and gone. The village guard had been informed of Arthurs latency. Other than Arthurs absence the village was calm and unerringly normal. The drinkers were still lamenting outside the inna and the mills continued to creek after their masters had worked them to the very limits. It seemed like a normal night, yes, a normal night.

Atop the mountain however Arthur was having nothing of the sort. His world was deteriorating before his own eyes and his life seemed bleak as the whiteness around him slowly faded to grey. As the sun began to fall into its slumber Arthur could not have possibly been more awake. He stood there atop the mountain. On the small peak no more than a few feet in diameter he stared into the a bis hoping that somehow this nightmare may not end in despair. Then something happened. A thought came over Arthurs head one so grim that even Kilrox may shudder at the sound of it. What if Arthur was never to see his family again, what if he was never to hear the gracious chirp of a songbird on a warm springs morn and what if he would never see the sun rise up in the morning. As arthur pondered something else happened, something that seemed oddly in tune with Arthurs thoughts. An orange tinge suddenly emanated in the fog. Twas the Sun, it bled red over the evening sky dealing out its final rays of light afore it fell below the horizon. All Arthur could see however was a somewhat intriguing and entrancing colour show form a grey tinge to a vibrant orange tinge and eventually to a blood red before the sun took its final plunge and the colours turned into darkness as night finally fell on the world.

Chapter - 8 The Night Draws In

Now that the Sun had passed down into the deep darkness the world was plunged into darkness and the blizzard turned to a medium snowfall and the fog retreated so that Arthur could see about 15 paces around him, things seemed to calm atop the mountain, things were grinding to a halt as nature began its slumber. This however was not a good thing for the young Arthur. The bitterness was yet to come in the form of an atrocious cold. The world had dived into a horrific freeze that left Arthur unbearably and deathly stiff and frozen. Within moments, the young boy who had loved nature so dearly was defeated. He fell to the ground, his iconic overcoat lay down still and unmoving and Arthur landing on the white blanket of snow and feeling the cold attack him as if it were an animal finishing off its prey. Now its work was done. The cold had taken Arthur Stonebrook. All lights passed out of his eyes and all thoughts passed out of his mind. He was dead, almost certainly and unmistakably. Arthur had passed.

Suddenly, the young boy felt something take him back, something take his hand and pull him back up from the cold depths of shadow. His eyes opened full and wide as he looked around his surroundings. He saw a small pool of ice before him and he peered his head over it to feel a feeling of utmost and profound shock. A shock that was so unbearable for Arthur he sat back and just stared at the ground. Arthur was old. His hair as grey as the fog that once surrounded him and a beard stretching from mouth to knee. He still lay there in his white jumper and brown coat that seemed to still fit him inch perfectly. He sat back and looked up and once again received the utmost shock.

When Arthur climbed the great mountain the world around him was shrouded in mystery and a deep dark fog. Now however the evil demons of the weather had been swept away and now he saw a world which he had never seen before. Above him, just up above him were thousands upon millions of stars. Stars yellow stars red, stars twinkling and stars bright. The beauty was indescribable. Each star was like, a little pinprick in the floor of heaven. Arthur though was in for yet another surprise. For now a voice spoke to him, a man, but thice voice was coming from the stars above. It began to speak.

"Hello, Arthur"

Arthur remained as silent as a mouse, he was utterly bewildered.

"You passed into shadow for several years but now you are safe"

"Wh...wh...who are you?" Arthur asked in a shivering voce

"I, dear boy, am Polaris, God of the Stars and I bring you back to this world"

"Why?....How?"

"You were one of the great hopes of this world, and I shall not let you suffer through the despair and pain that you have already seen"

"But... where must I go?" Arthur asked

"Follow the stars, dear boy, follow the stars", The god replied

A smooth brush of wind swept over arthur and with it a star began to twinkle rather oddly and invitingly. It was Polaris.

Chapter 9 - The Long Reflection

As the wind swept through, Arthur knew that Polaris was no longer to speak, only to guide in the form of a bright star perched high up in the northern sky. Arthur took this moment in which the air was cool and twas immensely clear to look around him, above and below, left and right, Arthur was astounded. He was surrounded by a superbly dense sea of searing mountains complete with snow capped peaks and sheer cliffs. They seemed like finding a road through them would be tough yet equally enthralling. Then, just then Arthur fell in love, with the mountains that nearly saw him dead. He realised their beauty and purpose in the world, he realised the staggering importance of the gargantuan rocks. He then looked up and saw a dazzling array of twinkling lights draped in various formations across the sky, the stars too gained Arthur's affection. So with a stout heart and a determined mind. Arthur threw caution to the wind and started to follow Polaris into the far northern sky. Full of questions yet still full of confidence, Arthur began his great journey.

Chapter 10 - The Great Journey

Arthur began to walk through the night. The sun had gone for it hiding for the night and Polaris was bold and clear in the northern sky. The snow gave a crunching sound underfoot with every step Arthur took. He very slowly looked back to witness a magnitude of majesty that Arthur had never known before. A pice of natural beauty so imense that Arthur was rendered speechless. Arthur was looking at the mountains that surrounded him. They seared up through the clouds majestically, almost as if they were the Earth trying desperately to reach the heavens but they were always just out of reach.

The view was astounding and breathtaking but Arthur had to post haste, for Polaris was beckoning Arthur northwards so he trudged down the steep rocky slopes of the mountain that seemed so enchanted, it had been the plae where, it seemed, he had spent most of his life. Wasting away at the summit. Arthur payed it no mind fr he thought it wise not to dwell to deeply on the past only to focus on the future but of course not at the expense of the present.

The road down was long and tough, the path became clear however, Arthur was now beneath a blanket of cloud. He could see a valley below, that, was where he was headed. Onwards Arthur journied.

Chapter 11 - Questions Needing Answered

As Arthur delved deeper down into the valley he began to ponder what had become of Silverton, and his family and what effect had hid absence had. He absolutely had to know but he was much too shy to ask. As the full Moon scinitllated in the night sky and glistened on the loch below Arthur finally plucked up the courage to speak to Polaris, he finally decided to clear his mind of all worry and anxiety.

'Polaris, I was wondering if you could answer a few questions' Arthur asked.

'I am afraid not dear boy for it is not my place to answer the questions you may ask' Polaris explained

'But surely, a man has a right to know of his family, to know of his town, to know of his life?' Arthur proclaimed

A long pause ensued. Before a gust of wind wailed overhead and Arthur knew Polaris would speak no more.

Chapter 12 -The First Sunrise

As Arthur cleared the valley he could see for miles ahead. A huge flat plain now lay afore him. The view became even more awestriking as the Moon cast its final glows over the awakening sky nd Polaris bid farewell for the day. With that, the sun peered up from the horizon dressing the morning sky with glorious shades of yellow and orange and illuminating the plain ahead. This was the first sunrise Arthur had witnessed since that fateful morning when he set forth up the mountain. It seemed so perfect, so mesmerising. This was the mark of Arthur Stonebrook's new beginning.

Chapter 13 -Down to the Plain

Arthur continued his trek down and out of the valley. He now carried a walking staff which he had crafted out of a nearby tree. As he journied nwards the mountains became less immense on the horizon behind him and the plain became more lushious and full of wildlife. The grass beneath his feet was such a vibrant green and the sky above him the palest blue as far as the eye could see. He finally felt a little wisp of his former self. It seemes the further Arthur went the more comfortable he became. Birds flew in his midst and animals surrounded his path and the sun was casting it's glorious rays across the land. Arthur continues on with a funny little smile draped across his face. He felt a sense of comfort as his turbulent adventure had reached a moment of peace as he set up camp for the night.
