[Free City] Mirage

Burner of Worlds
Overview

The Game of Crowns has begun and the noble houses of Altera are manouvering for power. Alliances are being formed and plans hatched to cross and double cross. The Game sets family against family, kin against kin. The only certainty is that Trust has been taken out back and gutted. From this maelstrom, Mirage arises as a free city, neutral in the quiet war between the powers, allied to none. Across Altera the word spreads:Mirage is the city of a thousand voices. People from across the land are welcomed to Mirage, regardless of race or background. The inns are welcoming to those with coin and the merchants are hungry to strike a bargain. The fighting pits will be a place to settle old scores or make new enemies. Legates are to be sent to each of the Noble houses, inviting them to come to Mirage and establish a permanant embassy. Mirage is a place where the Houses can meet freely to seal pacts and make allies in the struggle for ultimate power.

Location

Mirage is located in the central continent to the west of Irem (about 1600 blocks away) deep in the desert. It sits at the entrance to a pass in the mountains, the only route to the sea from the central desert for many miles north and south.

Theme

Mirage is a desert town and primarily uses locally available building materials. This means houses are made from sandstone with sand floors, and sandstone slab roofs. Windows are glass but only the wealthiest houses can afford wide panes, everyone else has small and narrow windows. Wood is used sparingly because it's imported. Upper floors of larger houses will be wooden. Stone slabs, lapis, gold and emerald are reserved for palaces.

To show the wealth of the city, residents will be encouraged to add status symbols to their houses: fountains, gardens, statues and monuments can all show how important the citizen is.

See next post for current status.

City Areas

The initial phase of the city will be basic housing for the builders. Planned areas include:

  • Mercantile district - butcher, baker, glass blowers, iron workers, jewellers, weavers and more
  • High status district with larger houses and palaces
  • Temple district - all gods are welcome in the free city
  • Mission district - noble houses will be invited to build embassies here
  • Medina district - mazelike streets with high housing density
  • Mountainside tombs for citizens ancestors
  • Market - I want to avoid the overused market square of striped woollen roofs. I plan to try a few tents - tall circular ones rather than the triangular ones of the temporary spawn location.
  • Fighting pit - PVP enabled
  • Farms - needs major irrigation system

Joining the City

I'm still planning out the city but I'm looking for people to help. Right now I mostly need creative people who are good at designing buildings and decorating them. Once we have enough of the city sketched out then I plan to open it up to people to come and settle. We'll need all the usual trades plus merchants and fighting pit owners. There will probably be a fee to pay to join the city. This being Mirage we accept Radiants or anything equivalent such as piles of resources.

If you want to represent your House in Mirage then plots will be available soon (sooner if you donate Radiants - money talks). Of course, you'll want to make sure your embassy shows how much more powerful and wealthy your House is than all the others.

Message me in game (rauyran) or post to this thread using this template:

I put together a pintrest board with some photos of middle eastern and north african architecture that I thought were interesting. See https://pinterest.com/rauyran/qarth/

This is an idea for city's coat of arms.

I've tried to do this picture in paintbrush, and this is result:leliva.png
The picture is tiny, coz i wanted to have one pixel for one block of wool, so if you open this picture, open it in paint, otherwise, it can get blury.

*waves* tell me the price of your embassies >: D
We have several options depending on the level of prestige you desire for your house.

The best embassies are situated round the main town square. These are one plot wide by about 2 deep (depending on the valley walls). They are immediately visible to all visitors so your house will get a lot of exposure. You may build any building you like as long as the majority of its structure is sandstone to keep with the theme. These embassy sites cost 20,000 Radiants each and are limited in number and offered on a first come first served basis (there are 4 available currently).

The next best are less prestigious and are suitable for smaller houses. They are close to the central square but do not face onto it. They are one plot wide and deep and cost 10,000 Radiants.

Finally, for the more discrete houses, we offer smaller embassy plots in main city. These sites cost 5,000 Radiants.

Just PM me if your house wants to purchase an embassy site. We expect to run some RP events around this idea in the future.

We've been talking a bit about building our first palace. I think I have a location in mind and I put together some ideas for the style I'm interested in. See https://pinterest.com/rauyran/mamluk-architecture/

This architecture is not full-on late period islamic, but earlier, more subdued but with soaring minarets. I'm keen not to over-do the appearance of the city with too many coloured domes, which I think can be a bit clichéd. The interiors are stone and highly decorated with many columns and arches (especially since sandstone is not very strong).

I'm going to have a go at making a floorplan or prototype in SP mode.

I'm also thinking about the Medina district which is on the south side of the city, behind the library. I want it to be close packed housing with mazelike streets, housing packed in wherever there is space. It's a contrast to the open spaces and light of the richer parts of the city such as the Mission district. Here are a few ideas https://pinterest.com/rauyran/medina-style/

if it continues like that, Mirage and Harlaus are gonna look the same D:
Well they're going to be 2 sandstone desert towns compared with dozens of stone brick, cobble and oak log towns. Even towns that use that same material will have very different characters. Have you visited Mirage? Come and take a look. Message me in game and I'll give you a tour.

Hey, so I'd like to visit Mirage, however I can't make it there without drowning, because I can't make the swim in one trip. Will you be getting a teleport anytime soon?

Yes there is a portal behind the main strip of them, near the big disused nether portal. It's next to the Harlus one so you can visit both while you are there!
