Willow didn’t want to think about that dreadful night. Her thoughts and doubts still haunted her head, like wisps of smoke fogging up her mind.
She was still processing the fact that she had run away and changed her name. Part of her mind was telling her, “It was the right thing to do. Your parents abused you and killed your only friend.”
But deep down, a voice whispered in her ear telling her “You should’ve stayed. Then you would have led a normal life and you would love your parents and they would love you back”. She shook her head vigorously, trying to make them go away. Willow knew there was no turning back now. Even if she wanted to, she couldn’t. She reached into her pocket and rummaged through it for a second before she found it.
She carefully pulled out the locket that Asha had given her. It was silver, adorned with a small moon and sun on it. Although it was her only possession that reminded of her friend, but she knew that if she wanted to restart her entire life, this would have to go.
Willow clenched her hand around it so hard her knuckles turned white. She took a deep breath and threw the gleaming necklace into the cold, dark water. It was almost as if there was a thread that stretched from her heart all the way to her home, except that thread had just snapped. Leaving her helpless and lost, floating away without anything to hold on to...
Her thoughts were disturbed by a creaking noise and then a loud bump. Willow looked up at the cloudy sky and realized she had made it, all the way across the ocean, and now she was here. At last, she had arrived at Storms’ Landing.
She stepped off the boat and onto the old, wet, dock that looked as if it were a hundred years old. She was able to easily blend into the loud, busy swarm of people who were bustling through the loud streets. Willow carefully navigated through the crowd and finally came out into a quieter alley. Just to think, she sat down next to an old, moldy barrel while worry after worry crowded her thoughts.
What should I do next? Are there any criminals here? Am I safe? What if somebody sends me to an orphanage?
Trying to push out the intrusive thoughts, Willow closed her eyes and took a deep breath. As she slunk out of the alley, once again she was swept into the bustling crowd of people. She couldn’t tell where she was, but all of a sudden she was falling. She looked down just in time to see the dark ocean waters before she hit the surface, sinking like a rock.
