DM’s Guide to Beasts

An optional process of using Beast Stats.
In order to easily maneuver and handle combat with beasts, DMs are recommended to use a DC (Difficulty Class) as the value that players must pass when rolling for their own actions against it. This can include difficulty against:
- Challenging obstacles upon terrain
- Against both attacking and successfully wounding an npc opponent
- Contested actions between an npc and target. For example- a player’s awareness must pass the DC value of Deception (Stealth) of the npc, etc etc.

Players may also use the table's stats to curate their own rolls.

Example:
(Round 1 - Creature’s Turn)
DM: *The wild beast, the Maulerkin prowls across the clearing to strike towards the lone Hunter with its sharp paw, its eyes focused. Get over a DC 15 from this beast’s melee attack.*
Hunter: *He goes to duck and leap to the side, clutching his readied bow and arrow.*
Hunter /roll body dexterity evasion
DM: *He manages to avoid the strike and the beast growls, preparing itself.*
(Hunter’s Turn)
Hunter: *He crouches onto a knee to aim better and shoots towards the creature.*
Hunter /roll body ranged bow
DM: *The arrow strikes and wounds the beast before it could dash away.*
(Move on to Round 2, continue.)
|| Suggested Modifiers
The tables upon beast pages are suggested stats during interactions with players. The following are additional modifiers the DM can add to boost or nerf the stats to balance it with a party.

Focus: If a specific beast warrants focus in the skill being used, add +2 to its DC.
Advantage: If a beast has advantage, add +4 to its DC
Disadvantage: If a beast has disadvantage, subtract 4 from its DC
Magic: If a spell or other ability involves Body/Mind/Soul, add the beast’s + modifier for the respective stat to its DC. These modifiers otherwise do not apply to the written DCs for normal actions.
Health & Damage:
  • Player Minor Attack = -1 Beast HP
  • Player Major Attack = -2 Beast HP
  • Player Lethal Attack = -3 Beast HP
