Halendar

Lord of Altera
The Backstory of Halendar Pyne from Birth to Childhood…

24th of Winterfeast, 2235- Year of Brilliance
The newborn looked up at his father, as he was rocked back and forth in a soothing fashion. His crying had ceased as he smiled up at his parent a look of joy on his face. “Halendar” , his father gently whispered. “ That’s a good name right?” The child giggled in his father’s arms squirming around. The man laughed and kissed his son’s forehead. “You’re going to do great things Halendar.” A single tear drifted down his cheek as he looked at his baby boy. “I’ll give you the life you deserve… with or without her.” He glared at the now empty bed still stained with blood from a few hours ago. “I promise…”

15th of Snowdown, 2240- Year of Plague
The youngster walked with a spring in his step holding on to his father’s hand. Both were bundled up from head to toe in heavy wool clothing as a light snow began to fall.

The trail they had set out on had received a thin coating overnight. The silvery pine trees gently swayed back and forth in the breeze on either side of the path. Bluebirds from above them could be heard singing a cheery song that carried on throughout the entire forest. It was a peaceful morning for the father, and his son. A morning his son would not soon forget in the years to coming. A morning he would look back on and smile at when times grew hard.

They walked along that path for sometime until they came to the edge of the woods where great walls loomed above them. The pair stopped as the child gaped at the stonework towering over him. “Wow…” He said in amazement. The man looked down at his son smirking. “Yes. Wow indeed. Do you want to go inside?” The boy looked up eyes wide with excitement. “Yes!” Nodding with a smile, the man took his son’s miniature hand again and headed to the gatehouse. “This is Stormhold Halendar…” He let out a relaxed sigh. “This is our new home.”

The man sat at the table watching his nearly decade old child lying quietly on his stomach. The boy had a book open in front of him as he lay quietly reading to himself. He appeared to be on the last few pages. His father smirked. “Hal… You really should start reading from the beginning of books you know.” The boy looked up smiling voicing two words before he returned his attention to the open page in front of him. “I did.”

Standing the father made his way over to his son crouching to look over his shoulder. A smile on his face. Far too engrossed in reading, the boy took little notice of him. Flipping to the final page the boy looked somewhat sad. His father had a worried look on his face glancing down at his child now shedding tears. “Hal… What’s wrong? Are you okay?” The boy said nothing until the book was shut closed, finished. “It was just sad… that’s all dad.” He looked up wiping his eyes.

Crouched looking with curiosity at the boy, the father rested a hand on his shoulder. “What made it so sad?” The boy getting a hold of himself spoke again. “The bad guy lost, but he killed the hero… Why did he have to die dad? The hero saved the world from the bad guy… Why did he have to die?” The man put on a serious face. “Sometimes people need to make sacrifices to better the world. Those sacrifices are sometimes small, and sometimes big. But they are never something to be sad about.” He moved to embrace his son bringing him close. “If that hero in your book saved even one person by sacrificing his life, then what he did was worth it.”

Bringing down their arms, the two let go of one another. Looking into his son’s eyes the man spoke, “What that hero did… is not something to cry about. It’s something to celebrate.” The man continued to stare at his son, as though he were in deep thought. He hugged the boy once more. “We all have to make sacrifices…”, he repeated as if he were speaking to himself. “Sometimes small…”, a tear fell down his face. “... and sometimes big. But they are never something to be sad about.”
