The world is the world of a 74 paged story I once wrote when I was 'young'. It is an Island called The Island of Knowlessness, for it is impossible to find out every mystery in this land before your time on this earth is over. The Island is very diverse, but it got a terrible history, an ancient enemy, that has been the enemy for a long time, but is now pushing the borders of its tainted lands...

PREQUEL to understand what is going on now:
Dod Mands Kranium, a Dark Shadowlord could have been king of all Shadowlords. He was the son of the king, but he chose the wrong path. He saw that in the land called 'Cranio', nobody wanted to live. A land he saw fit to start his own town, away from all other Shadowlords. The soil was laying there, ready, but nobody used it. Underneath the layer of grass and small bushes, the land was damned. In early history, before men could write, something mysterious must have happened that cursed this land. Ignorantly he took the damned land and began building his own city on it, despite of the warnings from the king and the other Shadowlords. They told Dod Mands Kranium, that nobody could make anything good out of that place. Even the Oracles did not yet know how to farm the lands, but Dod Mands Kranium did not care. He went on building his city, even when he noticed the stones that stood in contact with the soil turned black with evil! Slowly he was grasped by the terrible power of the land. The only heir of the King went away, to create his own malicious kingdom. He ordered to let his throne be built in the highest tower of his grand castle, where his soul was devoured by greed for power and wealth...
When his father, the king, got worried of the absence of his son at the court and the city getting bigger and more malignant day by day, he sent three of his most loyal Shadowlords to Dod Mands Kranium to try and reason with him. Dod Mands Kranium killed them. Ever since that day a big black smoke-cloud clouds the sky above the castle, powered by three constant thunderbolt-lines coming from within the stronghold, piercing into the cloud, instead of coursing from it. This cloud shrouds all his activity, nobody can see through it and see what is going on. If Dod Mands Kranium succeeds in expanding his kingdom, the people of the Island of Knowlessness will fall, even the Oracles will fall...

The map: unfortunately I do not own the original drawing of the map anymore. I lost the digital version in time somehow and gave the original print of it away. This is a rough sketch of it without rivers that used to be there. without the capitals of each province. I can tell you the capital of the shadowlords was on the highest mountain down at the most south mountain and the capital of the sand people in the east-southern part of the desert somewhere. The fortress of Dod Mands Kranium was situated in the middle of the eastern part of Cranio.

The inhabitants of this mysterious place:
The inhabitants of this Island are very different and they come each from a different place of the island.

The rawsea-rings is a tough people. They have broad shoulders and a heavy build, are proud and relatively large. They are particularly smug and slightly ego-centric. They are wearing heavy clothing or armor of rigid leather. A powerful people that are not easily trampled. The people as individuals are always ready to have a fun fight or duel. These people live near rivers, lakes and the sea. They are very good sailors and have always been. They can make the most amazing harbors, ports, bridges, boats, rafts. Anything to do with water, these are the experts by teaching generation after generation the details of their craft.

The Oracles are almost the opposite of the Rawsea-rings. They are tall and slender, wearing smooth robes, on which a moon and sun are pictured, both half and in balance with each other. The Oracles are a quiet inward directed people. They would rather walk a passive path when faced with problems and they see there is more power in discussion than in barbarically having a fight. If in the end it would turn into a fight, they would have their heads in the books, reading about strategies and formations of troops. The Oracles are wise and share their wisdom with the ShadowLords, who also live in the mountains. These people live high atop the snowy mountain tops and the snow plains. The Oracles float as they move around, their architecture is light and mystical. Thing buildings without walls, so they can float through them. Their buildings are the ones that are most connected to their environment and the gardens around them in Baroque style, with long sight-lines and huge axes.

Shadowlords are masters of teleporting, shadowchanges and instilling of fear at their enemies. They are also an inward directed people. They sound evil, but their nature is good. They are hard to find and very powerful, but because of their skills in meditation they keep on the good path. Should the noble Shadowlords have bad intentions, they could swallow the entire island in darkness. Yet it is not in their nature to do this. They are a caring people. Like the Oracles they live a quiet and mystical existence. These people live in grotto's at mountain-faces and depths of the mountain crevices. Their architecture is that of nature. They do not build, but inhabit the spiritual places nature has made for them.

Shadowlord Dod Mands Kranium facing the hero 'Ralf' of the story I once wrote:

The Black Fires are the normal men that have specialized themselves in the techniques of the woods. They know the traps and salvation that nature can offer them and they are an open people. As long as you don't interfere with their business, they will not harm you. They are lightly build, unlike the heavy broad Rawsea-rings. They can disappear and appear at will with their stealth skills. They master the power of fire. Nobody knows exactly where they have their capital base. These people live in the forests of the Island of Knowlessness. They communicate in an own language and can send short messages miles away with an amazing speed, using huge drums. Their Architecture is mostly made of wood, very seldom you might find a stone building. These buildings are most likely temples to nature gods. These people make their houses so, that you would not notice them. Their houses are hidden, like a hollow tree, or bridges in the tree-canopies connecting their huts together.

The Morads from Ragata's Sump are not men, nor are they plants or nature. They are in between. They are walking components from their swamp, with the power of earth and nature. They are spirits of men that used to live and study nature. They can dissolve themselves en form themselves somewhere else again from the slimy structures of Ragata's Sump. These creatures live in the swamps, specifically in their capital in Ragata's Sump (their leader is called Ragata). They are friendly to everyone who enters their lands with good will. Enter Ragata's Sump with a bad plan, then you will get swallowed by the swamp.

The Sandpeople have actually become a distinct people in the last years. The people that lives in the deserts of The Island of Knowlessness used to be a mingling of all kinds of people that lived in the desert. There used to be a Sandpeople before the current sandpeople. They were the ones who build the enormous structures and tombes in the deserts where sometimes lost magic can be found. The ancient Sandpeople, of which few are left, date from a time before the reign of the Dark Shadowlord in the land of Cranio. Back in the time Cranio was not yet cursed and the Drabende Dalen, the lands around Cranio, weren't tainted with venomous gasses. The sandpeople of today consists of several races of men, all adapted to the harsh life of the desert. They wear sand-coloured clothes and are strong and swift fighters, for they are with many. They are also smart inventors and thinkers, one of their inventions is the Stenballista. A balista that shoots magical arrows on the battlefield, exploding at impact. These people are in the biggest amounts of all people, spread over the huge desert. They know all the languages of the Island of Knowlessness.

The animals and beasts:
In the plains you might find 2 kind of special animals along with the normal ones:
Grubels are animals of the size of a big cat, with ears like a rabbit and four sturdy legs with hooves at the end. They are usually fat, but they can reach pretty high velocities. They have a thick skull and aren't very bright, they are mostly used as cattle to eat.
Loberes Can also be found in the snowplains. They are used as message carriers or as transportation device like a horse. They look like this:

The beasts and evil ones are:
Burax: Servants of Dod Mands Kranium, known as the filth of Cranio. They have three holes on each side of their throat, which makes them breath in a weird way, making them immune for the venomous gasses of the Drabende Dalen. They have a bend back and abnormally large claws and sharp pointy hooves. They quite small. Their use to Dod Mands Kranium is a meat shield / cannon-food in battle. Beside that their main use is to collect dead bodies in the Drabende Dalen, bodies of those died of the fumes of these lands. They carry the bodies to a huge enchanted sulfuric acid pool in the Drabende Dalen and throw them in. The Dark Wizards, who are very skilled in necromancy, of Cranio once enchanted it and now every dead body, comes out walking, as a zombie, only alive by a bit of magick and the will to serve Dod Mands Kranium.
These undead are called Lost Souls: They are one of the strongest in the armies of Cranio. They are warriors that keep on walking and bashing into the enemy lines, even though they get hit by arrows.
Zärch: These monsters are giantic flying creatures. To a normal farmer-boy they look like dragons, but these creatures are not worthy the honorable name of 'dragon'. It are flying demons, summoned from the deep lava-basements underneath the fortress of Dod Mands Kranium. Under the name of Zärch they fly and murder everyone in their path. These creatures have no toes or fingers, they have two huge back legs which end up in huge sharp black stakes, with two joints above the first stake for them to be able to grab onto something. At the end of their wings they have similar black spikes that they also use as arms/legs. They have a long tail and a neck. From the pointy edge of the tail to the curled horns on their skull, the Zärch has pointy spikes all over his spine. At his jaws, both upper side and down side, there sit four deadly tusks.

The History: (The entire story in short)
Ralf travels to the island with a group of other people of around 20 year old, with the goal to make a trip from the north west to the north east snow plains. They go there to camp in the plains in the north, but when they venture far into the woods, they meet a hostile man. He turns out to be an exile black fire. With him as a guide, they travel through the mountains over the plateau where they get into a snow storm and separate. While half of the group camp in a grotto, they meet a shadowlord who knows the exile black fire. They also see from the mountains that the black smoke cloud above the fortress of Dod Mands Kranium has expanded. Worried they move to the capital of the Sand People to have a meeting.
The other half of the group that got separated lost its way and now walks very close to the Drabende Dalen. By unfortune, they end up being captured by Burax and are taken towards the fortress, for Dod Mands Kranium fears outsiders more than anything, for the prophecy told that they will be his death.
Ralf and the Shadowlord, black fire and the others, reach the capital. There the Black Fire appears to be the head of a very important society. They are the leaders of every district except Cranio, of course. They decide to finally take up arms against the Deathly Tyrant in the south.
Word reaches them that the other part of the party is now captured in Cranio and Ralf decided, along with some friends, that they go and join the forces to help rescue their friends from Cranio. They travel via the snow plane in a secret water tunnel, right into the swamp where they are joined by the powerful nature spirits: The Morads. They assault Cranio and in a huge fight in the end defeat the evil from the island. Ralf kills Dod Mands Kranium and thus the prophecy came true.

End:
So that is the story tied to the land. Take from all of this what you want for the island history. Please know I provided as much as I can and none of this information is aimed to be a rule, more as a possibility offered. Perhaps the whole book (that i summarized very shortly, I can elaborate at any point of the summary) can be the history of the island. Which will leave no restrictions to any player. The only thing it does is give a reason for ruins and ancient temples already being there. Also it can make a player decide where to build his home and then use the architecture of the people that used to/ still live there. In this way the architectural plan of the island and the points where people start to build get their own guideline, you can choose whether to follow the guideline or not. :)
Let me know!
