FAQ - New Map

. . Can we have a smaller crossroads, . . please?
>large diverse spawn

>new port silver

kill me.
I'm still pissed off about the previous Port Silver.

I'm sure you guys recall the large spawn survey we had some time ago. We're keeping that in mind for where we want spawn to go. But to start off, we're going to have a small makeshift spawn that grows organically the longer we're on the map. It'll be a place for refugees to come together after the map change. We'll have ways for players to OOCly and ICly affect the direction until spawn grows into a proper settlement, then a grand city if the organic growth calls for it. Ideally it will change and grow based on player needs and wants, with true IC reasons.

This makes a lot more sense than WEing huge cities in right away, as it doesn't break immersion. I like it. :)

I'm not exactly sure this is a good idea. You're making something very important towards the servers OOC health reliant on players IC agency. Considering at the moment this grand campaign people have been hyped for and wanted, is being put on hold and possibly canceled because of a lack of character interest towards it.

I'm all for immersion, but when it comes to the choice between having it be immersive and involve player agency, or having the spawn be the best it can be for the server, I think the latter needs to come first. You may appease players here now by doing this, but if new players only experience a tiny, makeshift spawn and see no RP happening they will probably leave before they experience anything else...

I don't know about you, but if I were a new player on the server and I log onto the server and see that player's input on the spawn's growth matter, I'd be rather impressed. I've been on RP servers for a few years now, and all of the spawn's I've /EVER/ stepped foot in are pre-made and have no real value to them, other then being a starting point.

The idea Niah explained promotes player involvement in the development of the spawn over time.

How would you appropriately introduce a new player into the idea that they can make the spawn grow with their own input? Would there be a sign reading "Donate X amount of in character rp/radiants/resources and we will upgrade the spawn to Y", or what? I'm talking about a player who hasn't read all of the forum announcements, logging in for the first time.

Most new players aren't going to know about this input unless you point it out and offer them the promise of a bigger spawn. However if you do that, but nobody else puts in the effort needed to upgrade the spawn (Because it might threaten their town's position as the "rp hub", or it doesn't appeal to them, or they're lazy), won't the new players feel spurned by the promise of a bigger spawn and possibly quit?

I'm not saying the idea is impossible to make work, but I am not convinced it will work out. All things considered...

I'd imagine that there would be ways to inform the new player of how the system works and for one, the system from my understanding from reading Niah's comment is ran on RP, therefore, the new player would actually have to learn in RP about growing the spawn, which is rather clever and a great way to get the newer players involved.

You said 'Most new players aren't going to know about this input unless you point it out' well, yeah, of course you're going to point out how a system works, with all due respect. You can't really predict players quiting from needing to earn or work in RP to expand the spawn, some might see it as a fun challenage to get them involved. Plus, getting new players introduced to Roleplay ASAP will help us keep them hooked on the server.

Also, if Staff wants I can stop the dicussion, I just remembered this is a FAQ thread and all.

It still seems unwise to entirely link something so OOCly vital to the server's health, to RP. You should know how unpredictable the outcome of RP can go, I can already imagine people, and entire organizations trying to undermine the spawn's growth for their own gain, which could damage the health of the server overall. This is also just one way this idea could backfire... I imagine there are many other ways for this to go awry, as RP driven events and plans have before. But, considering I don't know how you're exactly going to do this, I guess it's just a wait and see kind of deal.... I implore you explore the pros and cons of every option here, because this idea is not without it's flaws.

I would suggest Naelwyn's idea. Rather than having it merely be a RP interaction, ask for interest from players to help with the OOC materials, and then have staff use their buildings, materials, and ideas to expand the spawn to fit the OOC level of player activity and interest, rather than the level of RP action, like he was going to do before.

We have a plan for it, yes. :) We're not just throwing it to the whims without having some sort of idea of how to do it.

For one, this is a RP server and should be the first thing players experience when they enter the server. Entire organizations trying to undermine spawn is a part of RP, and whatever happens, happens. Spawn isn't the vital health of the server, its the RP, and using this idea to get players involved in RP is healthly. Staff is not just going to rush head first without a clear idea or plan, Pad.

Also not sure what you meant by 'You should know' line there, lol.

Edit: Double sniped.

um im pretty sure good RP IS vital to the server's OOC health
Requiring RP to make the spawn better does not ensure good RP. Nor did I ever say good RP wasn't vital to the server's health.

I am saying that things haven't exactly been riveting when it comes to things that require RP, considering a month long awaited event was canceled because of role-play, if a spawn improvement were to meet the same fate, I doubt people will be amused...

So long as the new map reveal is key to lore and events I'll be happy. I do think people should justify the region transfers with lore or reasonable cause. It's not horribly difficult looking from the outside in, just saying the Gods decided to plop regions over. Or something more neat.
