The recipe and research theorem to facilitate removal of malevolent malcontractors

Foreword:
This document follows the internal processes of Rangers’ Guild testing following the onset of demonic contracts upon the vulnerable. The intent of the elixir is to prompt the willingness of any victims of possession to rid themselves of dangerous pacts, as well as to allow the process be painless. Should greater factors be at play, it is recommended that a follower of the Grey Lady be sought to maintain the soul of the contracted; however the elixir should nonetheless be a present material in any exorcism.

Any that benefit from the use of such may come forward freely.

Dossier: Contacted
Possession of the first degree. Inhabited by demonic forces extended through traditionally metal objects, curse bestowed by either a Pact Fiend, a Pact-Bound or an item left residual to an exorcism. The process of inhabiting the subject is incurred through contact, should the soul of the subject fail to resist the external forces. Changes to the personage of the possessed entail growth of horns, changing of skin tone and eye colour; subject gains the ability to conceal these changes with a rite, as well as speak the infernal tongue of demons. They will begin to experience urges of cruelty and compulsion.

Dossier: Pact-Bound
Possession of the second degree. A contacted soul may be offered a pact with a Pact-Fiend or fellow Pact-Bound, rewarded in exchange for claim over the subject soul. Terms may vary; resurrected souls are bound by the terms of their pact to return to death if a pact is severed (1 such case witnessed), glamours or guises are reversed (1 such case witnessed), and any other terms would notably be left void should the contract no longer stand. Similar to vyrism, Pact-Bound are granted abilities if they take on other souls beneath them; with a certain amount of souls offered, the Pact-Bound is rendered further transformed by their extended pact. The urges symptomatic of Contacted are bolstered and the attachment to the soul becomes so severed that delusions as to the state of one's own safety become more and more pronounced. There is an aspect of mental control exacted upon the Pact-Bound by their Pact Fiend that fundamentally alters the subject while their pact stands.

Severance
Removal by exorcism. The process is painful for Contacted and invites greater disaster for Pact-Bound. The experience is known to bring sensations of agonizing burning, harsh headache and imbalance of humours. A Pact Fiend is immediately made aware of their loss of a subject, and will claim the soul of a Pact-Bound; this claim ranges from sundering a sliver of sentimental memory or emotional wholeness to the entirety of the soul being shattered and rebuilt. Devout of the Grey Lady should be able to aid in the healing process.
Scission
Removal by death. Should the Pact Fiend consider their pact exhausted by the subject, their soul will be wholly exhumed and claimed. This would have lasting consequences on the subject, including the inability to know peace in the afterlife as well as total divorce from any attempts to séance or revive. This method is highly recommended to be avoided, promoting exorcism as the more pragmatic of the two alternatives. Any souls lost utterly to the processes of Scission must be taken back from the Pact Fiend in some way; a difficult process.

Figurative Potency
The process of dispelling external demonic force will require supernatural intervention regardless of circumstance, but there is a secret secondary ingredient required in all exorcisms: sentiment. Something tethered to the soul by the value of emotion, rather than any traditionally tangible force. The component gives way to the basis of the recipe: figurative potency. The ability to bestow meaning upon something through belief, which can in turn manifest as a physical change; exemplified through the phenomenon of the Blessed or other "figments". There is a physical component to the pacts, but it hinges on a bond through the spirit.

Extraction
To find something with a similar effect, materials were tested for their ability to carry sentiment-based figurative potency. The predominant candidate is birch wood; considered mandatory for the purpose of staking a vyre as well as a centrepiece for various religious rites. Should the birch be tapped, sap may be extracted and set aside. The wood itself is then burned to charcoal and grated to powder, to be mixed with the sap thereafter to create the central essence required for the elixir; dubbed "Lyserin".

Recipe
Follow the given steps in careful accordance:

I. Extract birch ash essence from birch wood, ferment crimsonwort fungus as base catalyst.​

II. Pour fermented crimsonwort into the closed cucurbit. Light flame beneath.​

III. Add Lyserin to cap, attach to cucurbit to form alembic.​

IV. Permit to resolve for one eve. Mixture should have risen to a paste-like texture.​

V. Pour into a suitable vessel, prepared for ingestion prior to an exorcism.​
