Foreword:
This document follows the internal processes of Rangers’ Guild testing following a public incident. Any attestations of onlookers outside of the Guild will be credited and are encouraged to come forward for the sake of fairness. Further addendum may be made as a result, in future additions.

Other witness accounts of this phenomenon are welcome.

Dossier: Elemental Types
Commonplace
The known, common elementals are:

  • Fire: The prompt for such traits as “hot tempered” and “vibrant” to be associated with flame. Founded in passionate emotions and manifesting in anything between sustaining warmth and burning ire.
  • Water: Crashing, daring and fluid in the same way that waters may be. Hosts tend toward flexibility and adapting to suit their surroundings. Do not fare well in dry climates or personalities.
  • Stone: Sheer, sturdy beings that embody an immovable and stubborn attitude. Reinforcing these behaviors with a physical presence that would sooner break than bend.
  • Air: Spirited and hardly seen sylphs attracted to hosts of like mind. The term “head in the clouds” may be derived from this in essence. Fleeting, inconsistent and erratic but high in energy and morale.
  • Shadow: More akin to mortal spirits, anomalies among the elemental types. Curious, emulating beings that trend to mimic those around them sooner than make physical presence known.
Uncommonplace
The infrequent, uncommon elementals are:

  • Storm: Vaporous cloud and lightning, known to make rare appearances when called upon by spellcasters, but seldom otherwise. Quick to crack in a rage from an otherwise calm. Tempestuous.
  • Smoke: Hazes of aloof, low energy smog that linger and obstruct more than they physically engage with the world around them. Often overpowered by fire.
  • Ice: Harsh and cold, seldom changing in their natural state unless melted by other means. A cold elemental and cold person are much the same in their distance and isolation from others.
Nonexistent
The unseen elementals that have not been documented, but may exist in theory:

  • Sound: Possibly existing within the force of noise. Thunder, percussive drums, so on. Without a physical presence to tether to, unknowable.
  • Light: Radiating from sky, flame, lightning, bioluminescence and other arcane or divine means, physically visible but not tangible in contrast to force or sound.
  • Force: Felt, but not seen. Transferred through impacts and traveling throughout the impacted rather than through the air like sound. Visible in movement as cracks in stone, ice or glass as an example.
  • Astral: The space between stars. Void. The area that the Divine Felicite was so intent on grasping, and that the arcane scar from her ascent resides.
  • Acidic: Physically existing as alchemical vapours or liquids that would naturally occur; perhaps just a water or smoke elemental influenced by the world it inhabits. Perceived once amid substance use.
  • Metal: Subset of stone, the ores that exist within the earth are otherwise dormant but have been known to be influenced both by arcane and divine means as well as warped through force and flame.

Dossier: Internum & Externum
Pre-Ascent
Records of the spiritblessed phenomena date back to eras of Harateth and the Immortal Kings, preceding proper record of the elementals that bind them in the present; the origin of the moniker “spirit”-blessed refers to this, as the initial understanding (or true metaphysical magick of the time) was that it was sooner a “fire spirit” than a “fire elemental”. Furthermore, the “blessed” suffix of the titleage occupies a different context than the present usage, with “blessed” referring specifically to divine influence in all contexts but Spiritblessed. The term is a holdover from a previous era.

In the present context, a more relevant word to encapture the combination of elemental to soul would be “Bound”. Firebound, Stonebound, and so on. Whilst these terms will be exempt from this document, it is the author’s recommendation that they take the place of the current moniker.

Instances of Elemental influence on the realm are first recorded in the old continent, just prior to the current at time of writing, across the Sea of Storms. The Sea of Storms itself is regarded as an Elemental, as is the Shoreless Gulf with which it feuded.

Other accounts include Ashna’s line of questioning regarding a subject’s account of the Demonic General “Fury”, which would go on to become the Obsidian Mountain. While the subject of the questioning offers no elaboration as to how this occurred, merely that it did, the phenomenon may be isolated if even properly recounted at all.

Quoth Evenfall Academy’s “History Volume I”:
“On its own it simply spread, overtaking the land it could travel through, twisting and ruining any cities in its path.”
Following these accounts, there are mentions of Elementals and Demons under the metaphysics of Animancy; the branches of the arcane tree that deal specifically with the planar.
Quoth Lana Rose Wake:
“Anima is, simplistically, emotion. Creatures of the planar feed upon Anima, such as elementals and demons.”
The bond to the soul makes both entities a similarly reactive parasite to the mortal internum since time immemorial until the present.

Previous accounts of the effects of spiritblessings upon the mortal internum have mentioned intrinsic powers that link moreso to the worldly than arcane or divine means. True, unprompted flame rather than something manipulated by external forces. These changes to the body and soul did not come without accommodation and risk; personality quirks begin to align with the elemental as it consumes the raw emotion within the host to sublimate with itself. The expending or transferring of energy to become something like raw flame serves to endanger the body externum as well, risking harm to skin and bone in a much less restrained manner. Over time, the elemental will wholly consume the host.

Post-Ascent
Following the ascent of the Magic Goddess Felicite, abilities were found to be reduced in spiritblessed veins; fires reduced to embers, frost to chill, so on. As a result, however, the consumption of the soul became much less severe of an impact on the internum and externum of the host. The binding of elementals to animancy enhances in turn, becoming servants through spellcraft wholly for the animancer versed in the occult planar.

Elementals have, conversely, taken on a much more dormant state in terms of worldly presence, seeming to only properly exist when within a host and otherwise taking a shapeless ambient flow within the natural elements.

The Elysmental Hypothesis
The lack of manifestations for a force or light elemental prompt the potential that the existence of an elemental hinges wholly on the physical presence of this element for which it is based; light, sound, force, weight, magnetism and other worldly effects not bound to physicality cannot exist as elementals as they are fundamentally not physical in basis. Fire produces light and heat as it burns, earth holds weight and force when moved, but the effects are caused by the means rather than existing as means themselves.

The hypothesis, therefore, is thus: the elemental may only exist as a causal element, not a caused element. While the fire elemental may produce light, the light exists as a result of the fire and not independent of it.

As a result, another hypothesis may be drawn on the nature of the eviscism divide: there are two strands of casting that may be codified as “material cause” and “immaterial effect”. The former strand is the volatile energies of flame, frost and lightning that may be seen in elemental and spiritblessed forms whereas the latter is the exertion of energies and effects by will alone. A combination of the two may yield a material cause with a manipulated means and effect from the caster’s desires, rather than any natural order.

Dossier: Excision
Severance
At the whim of the host or parasite, the bond between them is forcefully rendered apart. The effects of the unbonding may give way to adverse physical properties, such as coughing up smoke or water from (presumed) internal reserves leftover from the parasite elemental’s tenure.
Scission
The surgical process to remove the parasite without a brute-force tear of the tethered host and bound parasite apart, carefully cleaving apart the ties until the parasite may be removed. Similar to an exorcism, but removing the risk that would otherwise be present with a typical severance by introducing a third party to mitigate harm. Primarily done through animancy in order to spare the soul of damage, but eviscism may serve a purpose in scissions to mitigate physical harm.
Rejection
The sudden incursion of severance through circumstance or the refusal of the elemental to combine with an unfit host. Prompted either by internal personality resistance and refusal to change to accommodate the elemental parasite or by environmental incompatibilities with the elemental that see discomfort at dissonance harsh enough to sever. More severe than ordinary severance, often as the elemental acts out of desperation.

Until someone inevitably makes a book of it (since I would never touch MC books) you can just assume it’s stocked at libraries.
