Corvermell is run solely by a priesthood. this is a rather unconventional way to run a country, and it has resulted in an overbearing mass of thousands of government officials, who all are somehow united enough to prevent the system from becoming a legislative nightmare. presumably.
A priest of Vermella is called a Housekeeper, and is addressed by that title. the role of a Housekeeper involves not only official priestly duties, but also the administration of the region their temple (called a House of Vermella, or simply aHouse) is responsible for. This administration involves what you might expect from a judge/mayor/priest: the funding of public projects, community outreach, religious education, and dealing with crimes in the court.
each Housekeeper must cooperate with fellow Housekeepers in every official action made, and because of this, all Housekeepers of a certain House must live together. otherwise, things just get messy.
The Law of Red
the Law of Red is an official document, detailing Vermella's doctrine precisely. all laws of Corvermell come from interpretations of the Law of Red, known as Amendments to the Law. an amendment can be changed or removed by official action, but the Law of Red is absolute.
Sangue Lune
the House of Vermella in Sangue Lune is designated as above the other Houses. much like the supreme court of the United States, the House in Sangue Lune holds the exclusive power to propose Amendments to the Law. these amendments must be agreed upon unanimously by the Sangue Lune House. Traditionally, all members of the Sangue Lune House are female.
Current Housekeepers of Sangue Lune:
- Alashe Paraniace: greatly cautious, a scholar of Corvermell's history, who is often suspicious of foreign powers.
- Nihere Pausina: primarily concerned with the continued safety of the people, has set forth programs wherein dutiful citizens may learn to wield a weapon in accordance with the Law of Red.
- Melai Laica: primarily concerned with the health and safety of the people. stoic, but not without a caring side.
- Thiya Keirattin: the leader of the Traditionalist party, infamously angry at everything, has little patience for foreigners.
Past Housekeepers of Sangue Lune:
- Nyarlaica Miyere: Resigned due to stress
- Auska Salei: Resigned following the death of Petra Galtari Igna
The Grand Priestess
the Grand Priestess is actually nothing like the leaders of other religions. she holds equal standing to the fellow housekeepers of the Sangue Lune House. her added role in the government is merely to act as the voice of the people, and thus, she represents the country on official matters and makes speeches to the people. the Grand Priestess is chosen by consensus among the members of the Sangue Lune House.
Current Grand Priestess: None
Former Grand Priestesses:
-Petra Galtari Igna: died of disease, to everyone's dismay.
Law of Red:
much more like Paganism than "modern" faiths like Christianity or Islam, the Law of Red is both the law, and the sole faith of Corvermell. the Law of Red worships Vermella, the Goddess of Red, exclusively, though it acknowledges and pays respect to the gods and beliefs of other faiths. According to the housekeepers, the Law of Red is a code, to be adhered to by all followers of Vermella, so that there may be peace and unity among the people. It began in the valleys of Morgnatha, in either 900 AD or 2530 BC, depending on who you ask.
from an outside view, the Law of Red seems like a very loose code of conduct, allowing for many types of actions easily considered a sin in other faiths. this is not true in the slightest, as the Law of Red is supplemented with amendments, interpretations to the law so that it remains relevant in nearly every situation. the key word in all interpretations is responsibility. all things are connected, by cause and effect, and by the numerous systems and relations in this world. thus, every person, and every action they make, they are directly responsible for. thus, in order to follow the Law of Red, to not needlessly spill blood, you must behave, speak, and act in such a way as to never allow bloodshed to be the effect.
speak with respect to all people, rectify mistakes immediately, do not act recklessly, or endanger yourself, in all times consider every single effect of your actions. be sharp of mind, ever-vigilant, and possess great strength of mind. do not take a position of leadership if you cannot be responsible for every life you lead.
these rules, combined with a great number of traditions and rituals, makes the Law of Red an elaborate and powerful religion, with the result of fostering a great sense of piety in the faithful, unifying them under their faith. it is mainly because of the strict nature of the Law of Red that Corvermell can even function. without the overbearing sense of social responsibility instilled in the people, the underfunded police force would be overwhelmed, the citizen militia would be a chaotic liability, the government's power would become nonexistent as housekeepers bickered endlessly over every issue. the housekeepers are acutely aware of this, and the knowledge that they must be united to survive, and that they must be faithful to be united, is an inalienable truth that is never spoken of, but understood by all.
