This was in reply to someone saying that the chain of killing would need to come to an end (someone kills another guys friend so the other guy kills the killer and so on) so rather than killing the killer they could permanently injure them. I don't think spraining someone's arm is fulfilling enough for someone looking for revenge against their friend's killer.Christ if it isn't one thing it's another. The goal is to reduce pointless killing and violence, not replace one with the other. Instead of taking off a man's arm altogether, how about you just break it, or sprain it, or steal his sword, or get him to surrender?
But in many other scenarios you're right, there's no need to be that extreme.
